I've seen the first two episodes. If you've watched the four-minute trailer, you have an accurate sense of how well-executed this drama is. Fans of the genre are going to love it. The question is whether it can draw a large enough (read: female) audience. The uncompromising opening scene, which I won't spoil, is going to lose X% of viewers right off the bat. The rest is almost certainly the most gory series ever to air on TV.

This sounds fantastic! I've stayed pretty much away from too much info on the show, plus I've heard of but never read the comic it's based on so I'm going into this brand new. Can't wait to see the first episode!

On the contrary; that scene cemented my girlfriend's interest in the series.

My wife didn't have a problem with that scene either. Afterwards we talked about it and she said they make it pretty clear Rick isn't comfortable with what Shane is saying, but exhibited a lot of "friendship tolerance" as she put it, which endeared his character to her.

I really hope this strays far from the graphic novels. This is one story that I would love to have two dramatically different versions of. I like Kirkman's story but sometimes it seems he's more concerned with making sure each situation is exponentially worse for the survivors than the last one as his primary source of drama. Not knowing what is going to happen would be nice also.

Anyway, terrific pilot. Really enjoyed it.

Figure we should be seeing reviews from the major tv critics soon.
A few are starting to roll out:

- Salon.com capsule review
Pros: A film-quality drama series about zombies? Somebody pinch me!

Cons: It only lasts for six episodes.
- Wall Street Journal
What makes The Walking Dead so much more than a horror show is that it plays with theatrical grandeur, on a canvas that feels real, looks cinematic and has an orchestral score to match. For all its set pieces, however, Walking is most breathtaking in its small moments, in which the pain and glory of being human are conveyed with only the flick of a filmmaking wrist.
- TV Guide
The Walking Dead packs a raw, emotional punch while delivering the creepy and queasy thrills all genre fans truly crave. Based on an acclaimed comic-book series, Dead is visually stunning and daring in its artful use of silence.

I'm pretty hopeful about this series since I have confidence that Frank Darabont can make up for the shit-tacular dialogue from the comic.

Basically what this guy says. Once you get past the beginning of the story, Kirkman is just letting the contrivances of the setting (Humans are the real monsters! There is a sadistic dictator the next town over! Everything will go wrong! Badass unemotional killer woman!) drive the plot.

The pilot already proved that Darabont has taken artistic license for the better (
The demise of Bike Girl, for instance, was incredibly well done
).

Kirkman does sort of beat you over the head with the depths that humanity can sink to but I don't think it's a stretch to say that a lot of it is believable. Desperate people will do horrible things to survive and/or maintain power.

I do worry about
the entire stay at the prison. This could make for some very boring episodes if handled improperly...this part of the story really meandered and it got to the point where I was skipping dialogue-heavy pages in the comic. I would hate to have an entire season dedicated to that.

I don't object to the Waling Dead on the grounds of believability but rather I criticize the comic on teleological grounds in that Kirkman has designed this world and the fact it keeps leaping to these contrivances is clumsy storytelling. I have no doubt that humans are capable of worse than what The Walking Dead shows us (Darfur anyone?) but he lets humans being bastards get in the way of a good story.

Do you all have AMC in high def? I can't wait for this show but watching it in SD is going to be rough.
No AMC HD on DirecTV, and it blows for this show, Mad Men, and Breaking Bad. Every time I complain to them about it, they claim that they're working on it....

Ah. I have Verizon FIOS and for some reason AMC is considered a premium HD channel. =\

Just ordered Book 6 in hardcover, forgot it came out already. :)

Of course, I'll inevitably tear through it in about 2 hours, but it will be a glorious 2 hours. :D

And not to rub it in, but I have AMC HD as well. :P

Can't really argue here. I'm new to the series but not so new that I don't go "OK...so how is he going to make this situation worse?" whenever something bad happens.

I never imagined that Lori would be taken out the way she was, though. I was blindsided.

'Walking Dead' plans global zombie invasion stunt

AMC plans a rather ambitious promotional stunt to promote The Walking Dead.

The cable network is staging "zombie attacks" in 26 major cities -- hundreds of extras in zombie makeup roaming landmarks such as the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City, the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., Big Ben in London, The Prado Museum in Madrid.

The stunts will commence at daybreak in Taipei and Hong Kong on Tuesday, Oct. 26 and moves across the globe during a 24 hour period and culminates at the show’s Los Angeles premiere.

The six-episode series debuts Oct. 31 and the series is going to debut internationally in 120 countries the same week as the U.S. premiere.

I've seen the first two episodes. If you've watched the four-minute trailer, you have an accurate sense of how well-executed this drama is. Fans of the genre are going to love it. great pilot. really like the fleshed out part of the father and son.

nice to see some added and alternative scene from the comic book

Not watching the pilot until premiere date, but omg I just found out that Bear McCreary is doing the score for this series. WTF awesome.

Hmm, they don't seem to be too keen on the second episode.

They refer to it as more
Zombie-y, instead of more drama-y. Apparently too much action.

Seems to me that's fine for one episode, or every few episodes, but we'll see. They also seem to infer big changes from the comic in the second episode...

I fail to see the problem with that.
I mean this is after all, still a zombie series. I expect a little bit of zombie action every now and then

Yeah, and that's fine. I guess we'll see how it turns out.

The second episode talking a more action focus is bound to disappoint some critics, but it's onlyl one episode. It doesn't end there.

This is a big spoiler that I should not have read. :(

My own fault though.

I guess it behinds on
how long shane stays around. If he goes in the 2nd episode you would need at least 3 action sequences.

I can see the amount of black bars becoming a huge annoyance in this thread. I already inadvertently highlighted a couple. Maybe there should be a comic spoiler/speculation thread once it begins.

I can't wait to hear what he brings to this show.

For those that have seen it: How's the music? Is there a title sequence? If so, what's it like?

The music was fantastic. Understated, and sparse, but when used it was pretty much perfect.

Good, not great, title sequence.

NEW YORK – As if the morning commute weren't odd enough, intrepid New Yorkers trying to make their way to work had to battle past hordes of the walking dead.

Two dozen zombies, their clothes spattered with fake blood, were staggering up and down the block Tuesday outside Madison Square Garden.

Some pedestrians looked startled or amused by the ghost-white actors with bruised-looking eyes. Some people ignored them entirely. Others whipped out their cell phone cameras.
The stunt was part of a campaign in 26 cities worldwide promoting the Halloween premiere of the AMC television series "The Walking Dead."

I walked out of Penn Station 40 minutes ago, I saw nothing! Rats.

The problem is that there are two types of potential spoilers: TV spoilers (stuff from previews, casting news, etc), and the comic spoilers. Since a lot of people don't put what the spoiler is about before it, someone might not realize that they're having a major plot point potentially spoiled for them, as happened above.

Alright, from now on, if you want to discuss major point from the comic, just mark that please. IE

COMIC BOOK SPOILER
blah blah blah
. It's just courtesy.

Works for me as well. You should add that to the OP and see if a Mod can somehow update the title to imply bannings if not done this way. Otherwise, this could be worse than Lost threads for spoilers.

Yeah. Lost had Ducky patrolling the threads, but this probably won't. At least not till one of the mods becomes a fan or something (Amirox!).

Yeah, episode 2 crisis averted.

Interview with GAH posted on EW.

Judging by the two episodes EW has seen, the show is every bit as gore-drenched as its source material, which tracks a band of folks as they try to survive in a world overrun by “walkers” without losing their own humanity. “Let’s face it, the zombie’s modus operandi is to kill and consume people, so we do have to have some of that,” says Hurd of her latest project, which stars Love Actually actor Andrew Lincoln. “And the humans are in a position where they need to dispatch zombies, and that can be with shovels, guns, axes. You name it. But it’s really pretty interesting, because every show has kind of a different take. The second one has a lot of action, But the third one actually has a lot of character development, and we spend a lot less time with zombie attacks.”

One notable aspect of the adaptation is how slowly Darabont — who directed the pilot — is making his way through Kirkman’s still ongoing saga. While not short of zombie mayhem, the first two episodes really just cover the events featured in the first two issues of Kirkman’s comic. Which means that, if the TV show proves a success, Hurd and Darabont will not run short of zombie adventures any time soon—the comic version of The Walking Dead has already reached issue #78. “And Robert’s said that he has at least 250 issues in mind,” explains Hurd. “So I think we’re in good shape.”

They're just switching it up a bit from the pilot. Episode two is almost two weeks away lol.

I haven't read the books, but like with any television show, what matters is the bigger picture. I think it would be okay if some episodes were action, some character, some a bit of both.

Checking the DirecTV schedule, the pilot is listed at 90 minutes. It's going to air three times in a row at 10:00pm, 11:30pm, and 1:00am ET.

Pilot is 90 minutes, other episodes are the regular 60.
