The Weeknd - Echoes of Silence

Like the previous tapes, it takes a few listens to truly sink in; I try to never post first impressions due to that. I found myself losing interest in a couple tracks last night initially, only to crawl back later that night. At work I couldn't wait to get home and listen again.

This is great. XO sounds like a horny Michael Jackson traveled back in time to do a song with Pink Floyd

This album gets better and better the more you listen, Same Old Song is the standout for me. The Weeknd is probably my artist of the year, 3 quality mixtapes in one year. I can't beleive many of these songs are free mixtape tracks, they should really be put together in an album/

so far...

house of balloons > echos of silence > thursday

with that said tho.....the michael jackson cover is TOO SICK
Pretty much agree with this completely.

Favorite track is Same Old Song though. The way he breathes viciously in between reciting "you're the same old song", damn.

House Of Balloons = Thursday = Echoes Of Silence

for me

:3

EDIT -

To expand upon that, I really can't pick a favorite. Each mixtape has a bunch of amazing tracks and each one has like 2 tracks that are kinda forgettable to me. Not necessarily bad songs but just not my favorite y'know. On this, I'm currently addicted to Outside, D.D., Next, and Same Old Song. Only songs that I'm not really 'feeling' I guess are Montreal and Echoes Of Silence. I dunno that's just me I guess.

Fucking youtube users get so butt hurt.

I went to YouTube to check out the songs before I download this (Loving everything I've heard so far) and people are bitching about how there are new fans because Weeknd was featured in Drake's album. Fucking hipsters taking over youtube. lololol i knew this guy before he was featured in some mainstream album look at me im so fucking cool

Now I'm not going to lie, that's the case for me, but I'm definitely going to check out balloons and thursday after listening to EoS.

Fuck em man, welcome aboard the Weeknd Hype train. Coke in the last car, liquor in every car, and weed in the front cars. Swag it out.

I've always maintained I wouldn't be one of those people who thought of themselves as superior because I loved an artist first, but something about all the "omg found this guy on drizzy's album" posts did kind of annoy me. Then I realised that I was being ridiculous, that the more exposure this guy has the better, and that there are more productive ways of spending my time! :D

Haha I def think its some kind of defense mechanism, I just dont want it to get diluted and "mainstreamed"
Going to check out the before the balloons thing now.

I won't accept this answer. Literally the last person I expect to hear on a Weeknd tape.

Okay how about this. When you boil both of their personas down (Juicy J's modern persona) they both kinda cover the same subject matter. Getting fucked and their relationships with loose women.

If he combined the best songs from each mixtape and made an album under a record label with the proper promotion he could have a huge hit on his hands.

Right now I'm feeling Echoes of Silence > Thursday > House of Balloons.

DIRTY DIANNNNUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Yea. The KTT screwed version of Echoes is pretty good btw, for anyone who liked pj's screwed versions before. This time, it's actually chopped a bit but they didn't go crazy with it. It's good.

I fucking love "Same Old Song" normal but this screwed/chopped version is even better. I need to find some pills today.

.

I don't think you understand overcast, Juicy J is a certifiable hip hop legend for his work with 3-6.
Lol. I get all that. It's just, when I'm listening to The Weeknd I don't need to hear him.

It's fun to quote though, I get that.

I'm loving this. Where I can find his other albums. Didn't see them on the big online music stores, so I'm guessing it's fine to post links? Meaning, he's distributing for free, correct?

Yeah this is what I've settled on myself. IT actually took me a few listens to warm up to HOB, whereas Thurs & Echoes hit hard from the start.

I mainly just go back to HoB for Wicked Games and High For This. My apprectiation for "Knowing" went up with the video too. Wicked Games was the song that made me a Weeknd stan though.

Yes, they're free and all on his site:

Order of release (in case you care) is House of Balloons, then Thursday.

Yep, same with me. HoB was a lot at once and took longer to digest with me. Thursday and EoS were easier to get into. The order of release might be biasing the ranking a bit, but you can't change that. And I think the three, although they share his trademark atmospheric sound, are still pretty unique outright.

Missed the earlier conversation about lyrics, but they don't bother me that much at all. That's not really the point. There are an infinite amount of rap/R&B songs that talk about absolute nonsense from start to finish but still manage to convey some sort of atmosphere and feeling.

Why is everyone obsessing over a cover? Its a ffriggin cover. People acting like its some amazing new song.
Covers can't be amazing? Because it's an amazing cover. And my ear likes it a lot better than some new songs too.

Might even be my favourite off of Echoes of Silence.

Shiiiietttt if I can count the times that a cover made me listen to an album.

Hell, if not for the cover of House of Balloons, I would have never checked Abel out.

Shouts out to titties, balloons, and Helvetica.

ok

i've never been a big fan of his lyrics but

"I've been alone for almost all my life, what makes you think that you could ever do me right?"

Damn. The delivery of that line and in the context with the rest of the song is great.
