The Wii U is an eighth gen console right?

Technically yes, although a lot of people consider it out of sync with console generations due to its hardware tech being more like the PS360. The NX will be the first 9th generation console as well, although if Sony and MS are going for iterative yearly updates then I guess the lines are about to get a lot more blurred.

I mean, most discussion is around 3rd-party games which the Wii U doesn't have, so, you'd naturally see less discussion about it.

The real question is the NX going to be considered an 8th gen console or a 9th gen?

Technically it should be 8 because it'll be close to PS4/Xbox in terms of power.

but,

Technically it's the next generation of Nintendo hardware, making it 9th.

It's a console thats directly competing with the PS4 and Xbox One so it's an eighth gen console. NX, Neo, and Scorpio appears to be shaping the next generation.

Power doesn't matter. Well, it does it general, but not in light of "generation" discussion, which is purely about chronology.

This argument is somewhat moot given the heavy likelihood that Sony and Ms are both preparing 9th gen consoles for launch next year

It's Nintendos 8th generation of console, but it is not an device reflective of what the 8th generation is capable of.

It has more in common with 7th generation in terms of power, software and support.

I thought Neo and Scorpio were just slightly more powerful PS4's and Xboxes, but still the same gen.

Surely we're not getting PS5 next year.

And the NX will be a 9th generation console.

They typically release close to one another, but Nintendo is really shaking up the pattern with Wii U attempt to jump the next generation ahead and so far it hasn't worked in their favor.

I always viewed Generations as a means to standardize the tech for the next 5-8 years for everyone to follow and get caught up to speed for what the expected hardware they're working on is in terms of whats available at an affordable cost to maximize profits, game quality, and game-making efficiency. Or am I just a hopeful day-dreamer for believing that?

But the gaming industry has changed a lot and they're trying new things to maximize profits. I just hope Playstation and Xbox realizes that updating their consoles specs now is essentially suicide in both their consumer fronts and publisher fronts since it's going to us both more money at the end of the day.

It doesn't really matter what brand they stick on the box, or what degree of power increase the revision contains, increased power hardware is a new console, not a 'slim' revision.

e:
Especially those "GEN4" people, whomever they are ;p

'they' are EA.

yep, it is, doesn't matter if it is not as powerful, it is indeed 8th gen, people just like to exclude it because it's not that powerful...or generic

I thought this was the case with Neo, but that rumors pointed to Scorpio being more of a full-on next gen console?

I mean, it's available at the same time as those, but is it really competing with them? It's not like it's doing anything to convert their users over and there is little overlap in terms of software. It's like saying M&Ms are competing with Papa John's. Sure, both are edible, but one is in the pizza business and the other is in the candy business.

I'm not super invested in this analogy

Well, Nintendo made it then. NX is going to lead its generation for years because... it will be alone there.

One of those things can barely be described as edible.

8th gen, 9th gen, hell call it a 10th gen if you want. It's not offering the same kind of experiences and tech as its "competitors" so grouping it with the other boxes is kind of silly. I know people are very sensitive to this kind of terminology though. The whole idea of "gens" went out with the Wii

Your analogy could work (and fit really well, to be honest) with handhelds and home consoles, but with Wii U and PS4/Xbox One, it doesn't really work. Sure, there aren't many multiplatform titles which appear on all three systems, but they do exist, and Wii U as a home console is in competition for the same $200-$300 of a person who wants to buy a home console.

I remember in 2012/2013 some people thought it would be this gens PS2. In reality it's closer to this gens Dreamcast... except without the power jump the Dreamcast had over it's last gen brothers.

How did the wii displace time?

the wii very much aligned with the standard generational console split though

wtf are you on about

the wii u did and the NX will continue the standard generational change as well

I always thing of generations by common games that are the rage and sum up the technology of that age.

7 th gen was the Skyrim, Mass Effect generation

8 th gen is the Witcher 3, GTA 5 generation

Nintendo does their own path and are not with the others at the moment, and have not been for some time.
