The Witcher 2: @GOG: DRM-Free, bonuses. @Steam: cloud saves, 'chieves. $45 Digital CE

A friend just indicated to me that the mention of the Nvidia GF 8800 512 VR in the requirements but no specific ATI card mention is a sign that this game will be one of those Nvidia favored games and might have issues running on my ATI 5850. Is he full of shit?

Man, I hope this does well for them, maybe if it does it may make it to a format that I can play it on.

For people who played the 1st one, how close does the game get to conveying the world/tone of the books?

He's full of it. Even in Nvidia favored games the difference is not huge. 5850 will crush 8800gt with raw power in any game. It's like twice as fast.

Ample time to finish Witcher 1, but shit, I'm still rocking an 8800. Are those minimum requirements or recommended on the Steam page?

Yup, agree 100%, in fact, The Witcher 1 probably runs better on a 5850 than a 8800 as well. I expect this game to bench very closely to what to what is the average for ATi/nVidia.

Too low to be the recommended ones I think.

Well, the first Witcher sucked hard on ATI cards, but this one shouldn't because ATI has gained a lot of ground since then...

I bought an 8600 to play the first game. Now I have a 5770, but I'm hoping to upgrade to a 460 by the time this comes out.

I was hoping for that answer. I figured that since I can run a lot of recent games on close to max, this should be too much of a problem but I wasnt too sure. Thanks.

It doesnt indicate.

I just went with the GOG version. Did anyone download the goodies yet? I have to wait until I get home.

I played through it to 100% on a 5870, options completely maxed @ 1080p, ran 60 fps most of the time, and 30+ the most of the it wasn't 60, almost never dropped below 30. No crashes or anything either. Performance isn't where it ought to be for the hardware, but from everything I read, that's true on both sides of the fence ;)

Edit: You're the one that was helping someone (godhanden sp?) try and get their performance working, he had a GTX 285 or something and getting utterly crappy framerates, refused to play the game cause of it.... performance is a mixed bag no matter what I think.

Gotta say, these guys seem to know exactly what people expect from a modern PC game. Kudos!

Anyway, what's an Assassin of Kings? Do they assassinate kings, or do they assassinate for kings?

Finish the first game and you'll know.

It's a reference to
the ending of the first game
.

The pre-order goodies include avatars, wallpapers, photos of the team, and 4 exclusive songs.

I remember an issue with 5xxx series cards back when they launched. Insane graphical errors in The Witcher to point where it was unplayable. ATI patched it with 9.10 or 9.11 though. Theres a youtube video of it if anyone cares to look.

Other than that, The Witcher ran above 30FPS all the time for me on my 5850. It was 60FPS for the better part of the game.

Thanks. I was more or less wondering if the goodies were cool. Im mostly interested in the wallpapers and songs.

I think GOG is fantastic, and I truly appreciate that you don't need to be "running" GOG to play their games unlike Steam, but the fact that one of my pennies may help fund HL2 Episode 3/HL3 is enough to get me to go Steam.

Even though I already have a copy of Witcher, I hope these guys have plans to bring Witcher to GoG. All these announcements about Witcher 2 has to generate some residual hype for the first title, would be good for them to take advantage of it.

I'm rather surprised the free game for preordering The Witcher 2 on GOG isn't The Witcher 1

I'm considering pre-ordering off Steam this year and ordering the CE from Amazon. Amazon won't charge me until it ships but Steam will take my money now, so it's not as bad.

Heh, I hope somebody makes a chart with the preorder bonuses and box content like we had for Dragon Age. Gamestop says that they are just selling the standard box at $49.99, yet it comes with a bunch of the physical stuff from the LE like the map and coin.

Might be a misprint, though.

I just saw this in my email. Awesome!

I will definitely be buying this from GOG. Going to be an awesome birthday present.

Yes cause HL3 is hurting for funding unlike CD Projekt. They probably have a skeleton team working on HL3 right while most of the manpower finishes Portal 2 and works on DotA 2.

Even a 4870 was up to the task keeping the first game well above 30FPS maxed even with AA.

When do you get the store credit, after the game is out?

Thanks for the list, EviLore. Not sure which to pick up yet!

I have nothing but respect for the way CD Projekt have handled this, they have obviously put a lot of thought and effort into both the game and its release.

I'll probably buy the steam version since I'm incredibly lazy with patching, but the gog goodies are very tempting.

Guys, all of those preorder games are fantastic WRPGs in their own right, outside of Beyond Divinity. Its not IE games but they arent giving you crap either.

Day 1 GOG. They and the publisher deserve my money so hard for doing this DRM free. I haven't even played the first game yet, but this sort of thing is awesome and needs to be supported.

is it bad I wanna buy it on both GOG and Steam? >_>

I'm honestly thinking about it.

I'm a bit concerned about the potential for day zero piracy of this game given the way they're planning on handling release. Hopefully it doesn't affect them...

GOG.com version all the way.

Not sure why any other version could be considered.

100% DRM free and another free RPG choice from GOG.com.

Nice. Op mentions they announced a release date. So what is it? Steam page still says nov 2010. I'll probably pre-order it on steam, but I'm gonna wait 'till it's a little closer to release.

May 17th.

DRM or not the game will be pirated to the hell and back as every PC release. So why bother with it?

GOG, easily. EASILY!

Steam cloud has caused me problems. Can't load games properly while not on the internet. Its fucked me over before for a bit, and I'd just rather not deal with it. Its not like I'd be playing it on more than one PC anyways.

edit: Although, I'm probably not going to get it since I wasn't a huge fan of the first.
