The Witcher 2: @GOG: DRM-Free, bonuses. @Steam: cloud saves, 'chieves. $45 Digital CE

CDProjekt, Valve, Tripwire...

It's a good time to be a PC gamer, with these badass pro-consumer companies setting the standard.

This is the first time I've bought a PC that's not on Steam in years (excluding games that aren't on Steam like Starcraft 2). It feels weird, actually.

that little guide in the OP doesn't mention the retail version drm. what is going on with that? no drm? steamworks?
That's because the company hasn't mentioned retail version drm yet either. They've mentioned in the past that they'd prefer DRM Free, but their publishers think otherwise.

Yeah-- the script doesn't seem to be working. I click the preorder button (and screenshots) and nothing happens. Probably my work computer-- I will try when I get home.

Edit:

It worked in Internet Explorer.

My most anticipated game. Tempted to pre-order now through Steam, my only hesitation is how this baby will run on an i3 and an ati 5650.

I'm not looking to upgrade anytime soon, so if it would be playable and look decent (med-low settings) I'd be happy with that.

Who's publishing the retail version in NA? Wasn't it Atari last time?

Note to Microsoft:

THAT IS the way to promote your store. Not by breaking your own client, restricting your new marketplace to some regions, higher price in every place that is not the US, etc.

New store a few weeks ago (even when they marketed it horribly), releasing steadily very popular games, with good prices, extras, no drm, and making preordering available for a huge release, with a very good price point for a digital deluxe edition, quite nice preordering extras and something to compensate those buyers who have to pay a higher price due to their currency, in this case, in-store credit.

Valve could take notes too, but they're making shit loads of money so I guess they won't care.

Yeah, it's Atari again this time, and Namco Bandai in Europe.

Slightly off topic, but if Namco does a Soul Calbur 5 and decides to have guest characters again...I'm just sayin

Hell yes @ Steam premium edition as well as GOG drm-free version. This is how you do a proper PC release. Fucking PC gaming ftw. *fist pump*

The thing that impresses me the most about this release is CDProjekt's multifaceted approach. You have something for Steam fanboys, Steam haters and DD haters. The consumer wins in the process. Lots of companies could learn a lesson or two.

Was just going to type this too...At this point, I hope GoG comes out as the service that both competes and compliments STEAM. GoG right now is the most transparent DD service out there. If Witcher 2 proves to be successful being distributed off a DRM-less service, maybe we'll see more future games adopt that approach.

they're too big and corporate.

Also too busy giving pre-order incentives to Gamestop and then complaining when they lose sales to preorders as if it isn't the same company. :lol

Absolutely this. The options available here means everyone wins in the end. Unlike exclusive GS dlc preorders and shit.

Damn I'm torn between a Steam and GoG pre order right now. Both are awesome. Steam cloud support might push me the way of Steam though. That is awesome.

The GoG one is obviously better. I mean, you get a free game with it and you don't have to deal with Steam Cloud. You also don't have to be annoyed by achievement messages and have DRM on your game.

I never buy games off Steam if it's an option, but I did for this. I fully support DRM free software, so my recommendation is for GoG, but I totally understand the appeal of the Steam version.

When I heard about the GOG release, I wasnt sure that theyd even have Steam as an option. I literally thought theyd either not push it on Steam at all or release a barebones Steam version without the goodies to try and push people towards GOG since they probably get the most benefit from that.

Instead, they release a very nice Steam package with cloud and achievements and then promote their own service with equally appealing extras like a free game and PDF artbook. I was pleasantly surprised.

Is there a chance the digital version may be uncensored since they're not dealing with sitting on store shelves?

We don't know if they are going to censor anything this time, there is nudity but what we've seen so far is ok for an M/18+ game anyway, don't think they will censor anything in NA this time, well, I still don't understand why they did it for Witcher 1.

there was full frontal nudity and it's a big no-no for NA. Heads blown off and severed body parts are ok, but a nude women will get you AO rating for sure! I still don't get this NA phenomenon, it's pretty much the opposite in Europe.

This will probably be one of the few times I opt for a Non-Steam version of a game that's available there. GOG is a spectacular service and I will support them every chance I get.

<3 PC gaming so much.

I have the Enhanced Edition from Steam and it doesn't seemed censored. But I'm only about 5 hours in.

How awesome is CD Projekt? So awesome...

Now Valve, do the right thing and advertise the GOG version on the Steam news feed. Be awesome like that. I know you can, when you want to...

Their news feed auto-posts stories. Remember when it was showing the Counter Strike murderer guy for CS:S's newsfeed?

we get it you don't like Steam you don't have to keep repeating it

plus some of us like things like Steam Cloud, if Plants Vs. Zombies had had Steam cloud a couple weeks ago I wouldn't have lost my save

I was just about to preorder the GOG version, but looking at the "feelies," I would love physical versions of the bonus materials. I would totally get the collector's edition if it didn't come with the statue and was cheaper.

Actually, what I would love for a bonus item is a replica of the Poker Dice board from the first game. The dice and bag are nice, but it's easy to get cool looking dice and a Crown Royal bag.

Still will probably do the GOG version due to price and digital art book, as the collector's edition is just ridiculously expensive.

Same. I'm kind of sad that they went with a cat helmet (I KNOW) edition since I'd love to have just about everything else in the package.

Have you gotten any sex cards? If those show nipples then it's the patched version. The only nude model that I can think of is the green lady in the swamp.

Holy shit!!! Respect +100 for such consumer friendly deals. GOG version for me at release. Just to say thank you, there is high chance that I will end up buying both GOG and Steam versions eventually.

Crossing fingers that this risk doesn't leave very sour taste for the company.
