The Witcher III: Blood & Wine - First screenshots

I finished the base game last weekend. Far and away my GOTY for 2015, the only thing that comes close is Mario Maker. Planning on starting Hearts of Stone this weekend. I love you CDPR!

You are going to have a great weekend then because HoS is every bit as good as anything in the base game. Very good expansion.

I wasn't sure, which is why I asked. When looking at a scene like this it certainly seems something is being used (ignoring the menu overlay that can be faintly seen, was exiting it at the time).

Wow, that is one gorgeous PBR-filled screenshot.

I'm about to start Hearts of Stone. So fucking excited. These guys make my favorite games.

You haven't played it yet ?! Enjoy, it is stunning. After I finished it I went to watch playthrough of it by Christopher Odd, so much fun to see where he did different choices and where the same and the rationales behind it :)
I plan to do full replay of TW3 and HoS before once Blood and Wine comes out.

Generally just wonderingit seems like they are still supporing the game very well, i am wondering if they will use the new core sony unlocked and make the gameplay a tad more stable while working on expansions and such, i know its pretty stable now but i wonder if they could lock it at 30?

This is a stupid argument. An engine either uses PBR or it doesn't. There is no distinction on where the pipeline gets used.

Except PBr can be used more or less effectively and given more or less visible presence. It's been widely discussed that excellent PBR is apparent on armor, and makes no notable appearance in the environment materials.

You do know what the phrase PBR or PBS means right?

It is a work flow on top of technology (fresnel, a consistent material model, probably light onservation). If a game has the technology then everything has "pbr", whether you find it completely convincing is another question.

I've had an experience with this game unlike any other. It came out at a time when I was out of school, and at my parents empty house for the Summer. I must have been playing an average of like 12 hours a day, it was insane. I hadn't played a video game that obsessively since I was killing noobs online in Jr. High/High school. I was having a blast.

When I knew I was near the end I made the proclamation that if they got the ending right then I may consider this the best game ever. Not my favorite, just the best overall game ever made. I beat it, was satisfied with the ending, and I put it down, marathon over. AMAZING game.

I never picked it up again.

I remember thinking a NG+ mode would be awesome. And we actually got one. But it came and went, and I never really had a desire to try it out, same with the DLC.

As it stands now, the game sits firmly at third in my GOTY voting. Although admittedly, Fallout may be there on hype alone. I mean, I know I say i'm busy with finals and shit, but at some point if you haven't come close to beating a game, and still haven't picked it up in weeks, maybe it's time to admit some flaws with FO4. But I digress...

I'll never really know if W3 just came out at an perfect time for me to do literally nothing but play it for a few weeks. Or if it really was that good, and I just burned myself out on it forever. I've never haven't had any kind of desire to pick it up since I beat it, and I think my opinion of the game has unfairly lowered since then. I really did consider it a masterpiece while playing. I should really boot it up and play that DLC.... And yet, I still have no urge to do so. I still need to beat FO4 and BB Old Hunters (that's the game at #1 GOTY btw.)

....Why the hell did I make this post?

Read what you quoted again. I didn't contradict anything you responded with to the quote, nor am I among small numbers in considering those who have mentioned the contrast in armor PBR quality examples vs the vast majority of the rest of the game world.

Jesus F. Christ just download that Hearts of Stone and double click on that shortcut icon. It's not rocket science :)
20 hours later you will be switching your GOTY rankings.

Maybe I need another break from school (Xmas vacation) to get back in the Witcher mood.

We'll see what happens after finals on the 18th.

I loved TW3 but I haven't played Hearts of Stone either.
I should probably get to that before this comes out.

Definitely. Jump on it! It was so good that I'm looking forward to Blood & Wine just as much, if not more than any full game next year. Truly a masterclass in every respect.

Perhaps I am just caught up on the phrasing. I would just say the environment materials are not as good, not that PBR makes no appearance there.

Does this not count as environment?

The claim was first made that PBR wasn't being used at all, then after mentioning it was the reply was changed to only on armor, neither of which is correct as we've seen.

It's also not the first thread where others have corrected posts regarding TW3's use of PBR so I'm not sure why it was relevant to be brought up again here tbh. Really just comes down to whether one likes what they see rather than the tech used.

As we're discussing environmental fidelity here, one of the more prolific Fallout modders has abandoned F4 for the moment and is systematically going through the most problematic textures/meshes in W3 (rocks, roofs, tiles, trees, foliage, and eventually walls) and giving us stuff like this:

Before
7688f5bd00158b445668576d

After
ca2168de001d3bcf56685763

Still some weeks out, by definitely something to keep an eye on.

I really need to finish this game, i have barely played 2 hours so far. With so many good games due next year i must use the Christmas holidays to get through the Witcher 3 so i can then consider expansions.

The screenshots you provided dont make it look like an improvement. It looks like adding details for the sake of adding details.

Honestly this is a bit of a terrible example. The large rock never needed that roughness and with it has made the snow look like it belongs in something like F.E.A.R.. All that rock needed was a more detailed texture.

That thing now looks like a termite mound covered with frosting sugar,

Some of you have seen me comment on this in other threads and some haven't so apologies for anyone confused and thinking this is the first time I've ever acknowledged that W3 has PBR. For clarity, I'm referring to "missing" PBR like many others have relating to W3. Yes, it's technically a part of this game. But no, it is not done well enough for it to be praised for adding any noticeable quality to the world at large (hence a lot of people asking if they even "used PBR" in the greater portion of the game world, largely outdoors), with landscapes and pathways and buildings being simply behind anything we see in Assassin's Creed or Battlefront's PBR usage.

Yeah, they've got that upper class wood material indoors and armor catching eyes, and that's just about every chance you'll get to try and use the by-far-more-outdoors W3 as a resource for showing how PBR can distinguish material appearances from one another beyond the flat looks we grew accustomed to last gen.
