Didn't saw a thread for this, so...

Unseen 64 has a huge article about The Wonderful 101 beta and early concept.

There's even two videos:

Oh, and there are spoilers at the end of the text, so be careful.

Here's the full article. It's very long, but it's worth your time.

Diplomacy fails if old.

I'm impressed at the level of detail in their prototypes. That seemed very advanced, even visually.

I'm going to give the article a proper read when I get time. Just skimmed it and there seems to be a great deal of analysis going on.

‘The images are too dark. Elementary and middle school kids won’t go for this.'”
If Nintendo ever thought that something like W101 could reach elementary school kids, they were delusional and didn't really target the right audience here.

Great article. I so hope we will se a similar article for Twelve Tales: Conker 64 some time down the road, given how Nintendo usually also is quite secretive.

Great interview. Kinda funny how long they've been working on the game it feels like it only truly came together a few months before release.

I do think it came off looking more attractive to kids. Regardless the change in art-style was for the better personally.

I agree on both accounts, but the gameplay is not too well suited to such young kids.

What an amazing article. Unseen 64 do an incredible job.

W101 is one of the best games on WiiU, its a pity it didnt sell that well.
Buy it people, let the game have some legs!

I would had LOVED it if we had gotten the nintendo character game... :o
As fun as that idea could have been I prefer the game that we got. New characters for Nintendo and the wonderful team and story of the whole game is amazing. What we need is wonder red and the rest acting as moves in the next smash bros.

I'm glad we had something different but now that we had it and no hope for a new one, I wouldn't mind Nintendo taking the concept and doing it with their characters and their polish.

It was fun to read, thank you.

Thank you for the kind words! I'm glad everyone is enjoying it. It certainly took a while to put everything together, but The Wonderful 101 is one of my favourite all time games and the fans behind it are so passionate about it. I'm glad I could make this available to everyone :)

101% chance of that not happening.

Nintendo is crazy sometimes, we will never really know. Maybe in 10 years lol

Your whole website is amazing work. You really deserve every praise you get.

so happy this game made it to the end. without Nintendo mascotte too!
Wonder Red...henshin a go-go baby!

Wow the game went from a lot of different stages. Crazy how the action was so slow in the prototypes. It's strange the concept began before the gamepad. Looks like the gamepad improved the game concept. I don't know if Platinum would have thought about drawing to recruit citizens and shape forms (Even though this idea is kind of present in Okami).
It's a tour de force the final game isn't a mess.

to be fair the game is easily playable without the pad (barring those certain stage segments)

I hope we see a return to some of the darker art, or at least the 2D Comic Style art in a potential sequel or spiritual successor.

The 2D art just looks so cool to be scrapped away like that in favor of CGI.

That would be Wonda-WING, my favourite of the lot :D

Wonda-SATAN and Zombie are also pretty cool, but I can't imagine how they would have worked.

The game has a Wonder Zombie. He's just a gun user though. Though there's an in-joke with his real name: Christopher Garfield.

Yeah haha :) although, I still wonder what Platinum originally had in mind for all these crazy designs, before it became W101.

Regardless of Nintendo's thinking on the art style, I do think the change was for the better. The concept of the characters and game world being rendered as toy figures and sculptures ended up creating a very iconic art style, rather than just being a riff on Viewtiful Joe. And the final art direction has some of the best use of color I've ever seen in a game.
