The Worst Endings in Video Games

I was thinking about the games I've played this year and I have to say Final Fantasy Type-0 has possibly the absolute worst ending sequences of any game I've ever played. Wow it's awful.

Spoilers obviously.

After finishing the previous chapter everything all of the sudden goes to complete shit in the world. The world just kind of starts ending and an enemy you never heard of before just starts killing people all over the world. The game barely gives you a heads up that this is about to happen, other than the fact that people were worried about signs of the world ending.

Okay cool, now you got to this giant platform that appeared in the sky to stop the end of the world I guess. Cid the leader of the opposing country is there and basically became the judge for the end of the world. The game play in this area is absolutely awful. Each room has a different requirement that you have to abide to, ranging from not getting hit to just surviving a time limit, not meeting the requirement is insta-death. It's not that difficult but it makes a lot less fun.

So you get to the top of this area, re-fight easier versions of some bosses you already beat and then the worst part happens. You get to a room where you have to get to the top of steps and the requirement is "don't fall in", once you get to the top Cid just decides, okay I'm bored let's stop and just insta-fails you. You then are in an almost dead state, have to make an awfully long walk due to your slowed down, half dead state, and also watch 2 of the other characters kind of just "kill" each other due to L'cie(remember that from FFXIII?) things.

Then we get to the final boss. If you can call it that. The first part is just you dying to the boss. Then through more L'Cie BS, you get revived, get fully powered up and now it's time for an epic fight right!?! Well no. You can't die. The whole entire fight is just using every character, waiting for a small window to hit the boss, and take part of it's power. It quite possibly the most underwhelming thing in the whole game. Nothing about this fight feels satisfying. You don't feel powerful, you feel like you activated a cheat code for invincibility mode. Everything that led up to that moment was just kind of pointless.

Oh then the best part, once the fight is over, you get transported back into the school everybody looks tired and exhausted, but turns out they used the last of their power to do all this stuff and are dying. They don't look like they are dying at all but trust me they are. And then of course they all die. All of them. You see this could be incredibly impactful except the character development in this game is ridiculously bad and chances are you don't give a damn about any of them. You see the two previous characters who were L'Cie come into the room(who are now alive and well) and all their are all dead and happy looking. The game tries to act like you are supposed to be sad but I couldn't feel anything for these characters.

And that's it. This was basically just a rant on that game's ending. Game has other problems but I think the ending just kind of sums up what's wrong with it.

So what other games just fell apart at the end and had awful endings?

Objectively worst? from what I've played: Devil May Cry 2.

But the most disappointing considering how good the rest of the game was: Resident Evil 4. Very underwhelming last boss fight considering how much better the other fights were.

Recently? Fallout 4. Holy fuck, that was one of the emptiest and laziest endings I've ever seen in my life. Makes Mass Effect 3's ending look like Shakespeare.

Mass Effect 3. 90 hours and 3 games wittled down into three unsatisfying arbitrary endings
I don't like to use "one and done" often but it's pretty applicable here. This pissed me right the fuck off to the point that I didn't even care.

I loved type-0 ending. I loved the whole story to be honest. The endings of the other games I played were all forgettable. MGS V, Witcher 3. But the worst was The Order. Such a cliffhanger

Yu-Gi-Oh: The Sacred Cards.

You beat Marik and get his God Card, but the game doesn't save and there's no post-game or NG+, so what happens? After the credits it reloads your save... right before you duel Marik. You're destined to duel Marik for eternity, and you can never use his God Card.

Loyal FLUDD
dying, then getting repaired and Mario finally being able to enjoy his vacation contrasted with Bowser simply wanting Bowser Jr. to experience what it's like to have a family, let alone a family vacation
is a good ending though

yeah that was some bullshit no conclusion what so ever

They got
the fuck out of Dodge, hijacked a plane and the final enemy combatants were two viscous dogs being shot down

It was fitting in a good way — that game deserved better gameplay, but everything was on point

Many people are going to answer all of these popular edgy answers from more popular games.

The worst I've personally experienced is a Turkish Resident Evil clone known as Kabus 22. The game itself is surprisingly okay/good, I enjoyed it, but thay ending... It has like every element of a bad ending traits I hate in one.

-It's short and brief.
-It's non-conclusive and unsatisfying.
-It's a forced cliffhanger sequel hook to a sequel that will never happen.
-It feels rushed.
-Terrible acting.
-The End card flashes, wndings like 15 seconds long with The End taking 4-5 of those seconds.

...I'll just link it.

Mass Effect's is bad, but I kind of feel like it's the same deal as Life is Strange, where the journey was amazing but the ending was a big let down.

Worse? Halo 2's cliffhanger was ball busting.

The Last of Us. I don't care how much shit I get for this, it just left me angry. I don't care if that's the point either, it wasn't entirely portrayed as wrong and hope spots are bullshit in general when they're executed like that.

To be fair, the OP's question is this:

So what other games just fell apart at the end and had awful endings?

not witcher 3.

The Witcher 3 had a good ending, but the third act was definitely the worst part of the game. When I got the ending it was more of a "thank God this is finally over," which is better than the "this is it?" I felt from Fallout 4 I guess.

Recently? Fallout 4. Holy fuck, that was one of the emptiest and laziest endings I've ever seen in my life. Makes Mass Effect 3's ending look like Shakespeare.

The worst part is when you complete the game 3 times
to get all of the trophies, and no matter which ending you get the cutscene is almost the exact same. The Railroad and Brotherhood endings are copypastes of each other, which makes absolutely no sense because both factions have completely different ideals and goals.

OP, that wasn't even the real ending. You have to play the game again so you can find out more plot details and even a true ending

FWIW, I love Type 0. Restored my faith in the FF franchise after I broke up with it because of FF13.

Anyway, my contribution would be Clive Barker's Jericho. Game just ends.

Dragon Age II has a shit ending.

I also thought it was funny how the main writer talked about how it wasn't a cliffhanger ending despite it even being revealed they originally planned to continue the story in an expansion pack.

Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster

Tidus' blitzball career is a disaster. Tidus himself is getting weaker and weaker for a mysterious reason. He and Yuna have broken up. Yuna has a new boyfriend. Auron's daughter shows up. SIN IS BACK. Yuna prepares for a new quest. THE END. FFX-3 ISN'T EVEN COMING.

Maybe not the worst, but the ending to Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright was a major step down from the rest of the game.

It honestly would have been better if magic was real. The explanation given for the events of the game are totally nonsensical and improbable (oh, there was an invisible tower in the middle of a park and no one accidentally bumped into it?).

I can deal with the Laytonisms in the main games of his series, but this was basically too much.

OP, look for the guide. There are multiple endings, that is the worst. And Boy, you are for a treat with the after credit scene. For me... if THAT is going to happen BEST final fantasy in the world.

That Metal Gear Solid 4 Epilouge still pisses me off. Talking about after the credits.

yep, is just a excruciating expirience

Does MGSV count?

every single time.

I beat the game 3 times and saw every alternative thing.

To be fair, the OP's question is this:
That's the thing, Kabus 22 was actually surprisingly okay/good! The final level was also probably the best part of the game, a actually kind of creepy slowly molting church turning into a nightmare and a slow descend into the depths underneath the church... but then a super lazy/dull final boss fight, and THAT ending.

Call of Duty Ghosts has the worst ending of all time and any other answer is wrong.

That guy you just spent the entire game trying to kill, shot in the chest, then drowned while a frigate exploded on him? He's alive and drags you away from your brother then corrupts you with extreme torture. Literally nothing you did in the game was worth anything and you're back further than you ever would have been by simply doing nothing. Oh and no resolution except for "yeah you're fucked enjoy the torture now I'm going to make you kill your friends"

Ah sorry. I was referring more the first statement I took as 'There are more objectively bad endings out there than the popular answers.'
