The worst fanbases (franchise-based)

Final Fantasy

It's so divisive and there's no general consensus what's the best FF, only pushing of subjective opinions what's the best and what's the worst.

i.e. people deem FFXV as one of the worst FFs and other people say it's a great game and revives FF.
i.e. 2 people deem FFXII as one of the best FFs and other people say it's too brown and boring.
i.e. 3 people deem FFX as a soapy and terrible FF and other people say it's an immersive and memorable FF.

Remember when Jeff Gerstmann giving Twilight Princess an 8.8 and the Zelda fanbase went absolutely apeshit?

I'm surprised nobody has brought that up.

Souls games.

Too pretentious and convinced that their favorite game is better than everything else.

Coming from a person who actually like the Souls games.

Sonic fanbase. By far. Between aggressively defending even the shitty games like 2006, take a quick look at deviantart and youll see shit thatll burn your eyes. (Mainly 'thick' fetishers, vore, mlp crossovers and yiff/beastiality.
And didnt overwatch fans threaten the devs when they made it clear mercy wasnt in a lesbian relationship?

If we include multimedia i would also say mlp and steven universe. Mlp for their fans obsessively crossing over mlp with EVERY other form of media/franchise. And steven universe fans got super aggressive over shippings that didnt go their way.

It's really not.
action movie uncharted shit with likable characters > boring ass tomb raider shit

Tomb Raider's climbing/jumping/combat gameplay were much more smooth and easier to use. With Uncharted I couldn't make a 180 turn without Nate making a delayed turn run and then running into a wall.

Modded? Otherwise PC is still pretty meh. PS4/X1 version made a lot of big and subtle changes including stuff based on PC mods that people liked, and added new content like a Bloody Palace for Vergil.

Not really. DmC on PC was fine for me. 60 FPS, great graphics and gameplay, no glitches that I encountered. I didn't care for the Blood Palace stuff though. I just played the campaign.

Yeah, that's really fucking annoying. Or Drake rubbing his hands on every wall he's next to.

Kojima's fans aren't as offensive to others as some, but holy shit they are a bunch of simpletons .. just try https://www.reddit.com/r/DeathStranding/ , pick any thread at random .. is it supposed to be a joke ? ironic? is it a meme?

It's a shitposter's safe space, and I can't cope.

+1 to this!

I really hate these games of the list, fans should prove other taste, not only married with these ones.

I am absolutely stunned that its taken until the second page for Final Fantasy to register on here.

I am a huge fan of Final Fantasy (and yes, especially of VII which has a LOT of undeserved hate) and if FFVII is your favourite game, you are mocked because it is the 'popular' one. If your favourite isn't IX then you're wrong basically.

As a few have put, every fanbase has a loud shouting side to it but I haven't come across any nastiness in any group until I spoke to a few FF fans online...

Oh, you said franchise based. Well, continuing with Nintendo, I think Pokemon and Smash have pretty terrible fanbases. And again, I love both of them. But Smash and Pokemon fans are whiny and pretentious, and they're never fucking happy. And I Iove how every video Nintendo uploads is filled with "where's Smash?"

Page 2 and still no Smash? come on, guess you could bundle them with the Nintendo fans at large.

I think it's just not a particular fanbase, but when a fan is unable to come to terms with the faults of the game, the franchise, or the studio, that's when it just gets annoying.

Nintendo is a good example for me because I grown out of games that aren't strong in narrative. I'm not interested in Breath of the Wild because I know the story isn't complex, but some fans will come at me with insults saying the story is great or whatever. I also dislike Diablo 3 immensely, which was the start of Blizzard's downfall. I've done a 180 degree from Blizzard fanboy to practically a Blizzard hater (hate is a strong word, but I am extremely critical now). I'll pick apart Activision Blizzard's design decision because they've all been money driven. Blizzard fans hate me for it lol.

I remember when Jim Sterling gave a certain Zelda game 7/10 and people, including grown men and women, lost it to the point where it got so embarrassing nobody sane wanted to approach the subject anymore.

But that's just an extreme example I can remember. Really, any rabid fanbase can turn ugly when expectations and opinions clash.

And then the fanbase turned on the game and now it's literally worse than Hitler. I remember when Skyward Sword was released, and people were like "OMG best game ever!" And now they're like "OMG this game is awful and its entire family should be slaughtered!" The exact opposite of what happened to Majora's Mask (thank god, because that game is amazing).

Ironic, isn't it?

Every fanbase has some loony element, some more vocal than others. Just today I stumbled over a thread of Battletech fans openly lamenting the fact that you can't guide a 100% pureblood blue eyed and blonde master race unit to total victory in the latest game from HBS. That is a game series that had what would today be considered "inclusive" fiction and artwork of its tabletop/rpg source material in the 80ies, before that was even a thing in the mainstream media (as well as some really bizarre sexism in some of the novels to counterbalance I guess).

You know, this is why I put 'franchises' in the title. Nintendo is not a game franchise. Idid that to prevent console warrioring.

Btw I'm a Nintendo-fan.
I know what you mean, but at the same time, in the case of Nintendo, it's the same fans across a lot of there games (like people that jumped on Sterling over Zelda also jumped on him over a fake Super Mario Odyssey Metacritic picture), so you might as well just say Nintendo. Although Smash could be singled out as worst as it does bring in some of the FGC crowd too, and everyone knows how some of those are.

Although I do have to change my answer about XBOX fanbase at the moment. I guess I'll go with Sonic's, there is a wide variety of things wrong with that fanbase.

I know what you mean on BOTW, but I remember seeing a lot of hate for Skyward Sword since it released. Then again if you're talking about the gamespot score backlash, then yeah, which was funnier than Sterling with BOTW since they were turning on that game just days after going ape shit over gamespot when they actually started playing it themselves.

Nvm I was actually talking about Skyward Sword and the 7.8 it got from Gamespot lol. I apologize. I'm drunk and posting like an idiot. At least I have autocorrect lol.

I just think it's boring to name an entire fanbase conglomerate. If we did that we could also name Sony-fans who wot ever accept criticism against 'their' games and who couldn't accept that Horizon is not on the same level as BotW.

But that's, again, boring :D

There are a lot fanbases within Nintendo, and they deserve to be called out one by one!

That said: Screw the Smash-community that wants to keep Ganondorf a clone of Falcon. And NOBODY cares about Geno!

I care about Geno. I love SMRPG. Sad reacts only.

Btw I hate Smash fans too. Great series, awful fans.

Only ones that annoy me are console fanboys/warriors, but the Kojima and Souls fanbase are pretty close to it, but also as an honorable mention since I hadn't seen it being posted yet but I consider the Persona fanbase(the over zealous ones) are kind of annoying too.

Not to take away from their games or SMT games. Pretty solid games.

A big chunk of CoD and Fifa fans. Mostly because many of them still act as if videogames were for nerds if not for the ones of their liking.

On gaf?

Pokémon - outspoken few who like how bloated and over complex it is, while gameplay stagnates
monster hunter - Basically just Nintendo fans, whom spent the last 5 years clinging to any interview with any praise of Nintendo. I swear only a small % actually like the game, thank god for world.
silent hill - Its dead, just like dino crisis, fear and a million other decent francises, stop blaming konami.
jimquisition - preaching to choir, tabloid drama, lazy

I'd be laughed right out of the worst Sonic communities.

I prefer Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog to SatAM, and genuinely enjoyed Ken Penders' work in the comic.

Wow. You certainly have some unpopular opinions there!

I can kinda agree with the first 2 though. Pokemon could use a swift kick in the mechanics (he says, as he's hatching egg #408 for a shiny Scyther) and Monster Hunter World is exactly what people have been asking Capcom for.

Shiny indeed. If anything, Pokemon tries too hard to tack on strange or confusing mechanics that weren't thought out well.
For every move deleter and dark-type (additions to help relieve important issues)... we get sky battles, triple battles, mega evolution (it improves several weaker Pokemon, yet to some degree one might find it a step back in team diversity by taking up the item slot), etc.

I'm not one to generalise, but it's generally Nintendo fans with anything Nintendo.

I would definitely like to generalize, but if I had to drill down to a specific Nintendo franchise, it would be Zelda fans. Speaking as someone whose favorite game franchise is Zelda, I don't think BOTW is very good and watching Jim Sterling get crucified and having his whole website attacked for having that same opinion made me feel embarrassed to be a Zelda fan at all.

Pokemon triggered this thread.

It's one thing for gamefreaks to be greedy assholes. It's another when 'fans' celebrate this sort of ... what synonym for 'laziness' you can find, since 'lazy dev' has been outlawed.

Fixed camera
Even younger looking trainers than before
Blocky, grid-based world design
Only 150 (and some) Pokemon
No online
No wild battles
Simplified (aka cut) festureset (no EVs)

And I won't even mention lack of voice acting.

This is so disappointing. It is an objectivly bad announcement. If you think that's up to opinion, imagine this: This same game was called 'Monster World Adventures'. Would you buy a new ip looking like that for 60 dollar? No, you wouldn't.

I'm sick of the hardcore Pokemon-fanbase celebrating this game. It's such a non-effort, devoid of any ambition. But they shoot down anyone who dares complaining, see the guy from serebii.net.

And they're saying '2019 a real Pokemon will releasee, so this is okay'. Fuck you, are you really going to pretend for the next year that the same gamefreaks will deliver a BotW-Pokemon in 2019? Wot happen.

Rant end. Fuck.

I'm not a hardcore Pokemon guy so I'm not a great example but I think the new game looks interesting, as long as combat is still in place and resembling what I knew it to be like. I like it being the original 1st generation of Pokemon, I think the ones that came after have been much less interesting but then look at the Pokemon games I've beaten:

- Red
- Yellow
- Silver
- Ruby

I started White and I think Pearl, didn't get much further than a few hours in either. If I were to get a new Pokemon game first gen is all I'd be interested in, as long as the game isn't otherwise dumbed down I may grab it someday.

Worst fanbase is hands down Smash Bros. though.

I was pretty disappointed by the pokemon announcement as well. Which is why I did the only thing I could do in protest, which was to dislike the video on youtube. They left me no choice xD
But I wouldn't say that I have any problems with a specific fan base. I think the problem is the sub group within most fan bases. which is the people who will consume anything and won't challenge developers or put up any sort of protest when there's a clear gap in quality from a previous work.

#1 worst fans by ocean miles are nintendo fanboys, just way too delusional. 2nd worst are sony for overrating exclusives way too much, but not nearly as bad as nintendo. Pretty much all franchises.

For awhile maybe it was the Call of Duty and Madden fan base for keeping those franchises alive. I mean it really was to the point where retail was really willing to sell only those two games.
