I actually don't think #4 in the OP is that bad. It was a pretty typical 90s haircut that could look good if done right (see: Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting).

Unfortunately, I had something similar as a kid right when it was going out of style...People used to make fun of me for it but my mom thought it was "cute" so she wouldn't let me change it.

I became so self-conscious of my hair that I've kept it shaggy ever since.

Certain hair does not have the correct texture to form proper dreadlocks. Period.

Not washing your hair and letting get matted and gross is not the same as having your hair "lock" up.

People who actually know what they're doing wash and clean their dreads.
