[The Wrap] Avatar 2 Is Not Making Its Winter 2017 Release

The implication of his post is that there have been multiple Marvel movies that haven't done gangbusters. Enough times where a pattern has emerged.

Ant-man is the first movie after The Avengers 2 and both films did really well.

No, he said everyone didn't feel the need to see every Marvel film. Ant-Mang didn't perform like Avengers or CapAm or GOTG.

It's kinda the point he was making. Not whether or not Ant-Mang was profitable.

At this rate I'm doubting a 2018 release to be honest.

These movies better be fucking mindblowing considering how long it's taking Cameron and his hired hands simply to write the scripts.

Avatar is a revival of aliens, basically the same plot, enterprise business, army vs aliens, macho girl soldier, mechs,

Then the avatar 2 can be a remake of titanic, a business man chalenge pandora god, this ship sunk, adventures with mermaids of the underwater palace, the hero die at the end, and new advanced aliens come to clean the junk.

Avatar 2 will see a recently separated Jake and Neytiri stranded underwater with RDA navy seals equivalent.

But weren't people so sure that Avatar 2 would destroy The Force Awakens' records?

I went looking to see if you'd made a prediction in the Force Awakens box office prediction thread (or one of the several variations on that theme). Didn't find anything, but I did find these gems.

Can't wait to see the Rottentomatoes score for this btw.

It WON'T hit 90 or above, bookmark me.

Mad Max Fury Road will remain the best film of 2015.

I can't wait to see the fumes and the meltdowns when Star Wars VII flops and comes in just under Jurassic World/Avengers 1 Box Office.

Will it even manage to beat Age of Ultron?

Captain America: Civil War will break records though.

You sure do spend a lot of time rolling around on the floor laughing!

Post History is harsh but fair entity.

What are all the 'Just trying to avoid Star Wars!' people going to say when the new release dates are announced as December 2018/19/20?
Eventually the sun will expand and consume the Earth, Disney will go bankrupt after their 64th Star Wars reboot, and James Cameron's cryogenically-preserved brain will still be figuring out ideas for Avatar 2.

It's funny to look through a thread like that one where people felt bad for Peter Jackson that he didn't have the time to prep The Hobbit trilogy as he wanted before he started shooting them back to back to back.

But when Cameron takes his time to make sure everything - especially the scripts, are prepared to the best of his ability before shooting back to back to back, everybody gives him shit for it.

Why would anybody prefer a rush job like so many other undercooked pieces of tentpole shit.

The only thing that concerns me about the sequels is who is going to score them.

Well, you see, MCU and Star Wars are given sequels and spin-offs every year.

Honestly I don't see a real reason to rush all of this. There's a lot of brand synergy in the works , mostly the theme park and it doesn't make much sense to inch forward at all until everything is ready to go.

So , maybe Avatar 2 will only start production once James feels the tech is there to film 120fps 3D under the water combined with special effects 10 times better than the original film. Perhaps each entry plans to focus on a different element too ? The first one felt like it was largely EARTH, if 2 is WATER , maybe 3 can be AIR and the final entry can be FIRE ? I expect some kind of theme running through there , maybe even each entry focuses on a different moon/planet ?

Who knows for sure. Whenever it all happens though, a gruelling long ass shoot to film 7-8 hours of content will commence to fill up 3 movies and then each entry will need 2-3 years of post production work (largely done concurrently to make sure they hit release dates). So, if ever word makes it out that the Avatar sequel is really being filmed, I expect we'll have a release for the movie about 36 months later , for A2 anyway.

I doubt James cares about star wars either but if I were fox I'd work something out with disney , like maybe they won't compete with each other for 4 months and then they can split a home release of Star Wars, Empire and Jedi that's remastered based on the original versions ? :D

Everybody gets shit for taking their time. Just look at George R R Martin. James Cameron is no different.

Though honestly, I haven't seen that many people giving Cameron shit for the delays, probably because Avatar is a pretty self-contained movie and there's no obvious setup to get people itching for a sequel.

I certainly wouldn't want the films rushed like the Hobbit films were, but it'll be at the very least 9 years since the sequel was announced before we can buy tickets for this thing. Even for Cameron that's kinda asinine. We didn't even get that Avatar novel or a cool documentary to hold us over.

God damn you Cameron, we could've had 2 Battle Angel movies by now, but you're still stuck in the planning stages of a Avatar sequel.
I wouldn't be surprised if Cameron released Avatar 2 in 2019 for shits n' giggles.

The Battle Angel movie ain't never getting released, and not because of Avatar 2.

And that double negative means a negative, not a positive.

Nah, Rodriguez will crank out that Battle Angel movie.

And if it's recieved well, I wonder if you'll have Cameron seriously consider turning over directorial duties for the Avatars to other people, too.

Does anyone seriously think Cameron will budge from the Dec release date if the movie is ready? Nope. Cameron will own December.

I think it is more to do with the fact that people are pissed that Cameron is being occupied in a property that a bunch of gaffers dont care for so many years instead of doing something else like Battle Angel.

Avatar doesn't have to move for any film. I actually thought Star Wars VIII original release date was to avoid Avatar 2. I assume Disney exec's learned it would be delayed so they could move it to the December spot instead.

At this rate he might as well delay it another year after this, so he can aim for the 10th anniversary of the first film.

only to delay it again

Technically BA is now being directed by Robert Rodriguez, so it has a better chance than waiting for Cameron to finish his Avatar series.
I don't have much faith in Rodriguez though...

Robert Rodriguez will probably crank out three or four movies before Cameron finishes Avatar 2 in 2020.

The amount of time Avatar 2 comes out will be almost the same amount of time betweem Revenge of the Sith and The Force Awakens, or Toy Story 2 and 3. That seems really funny to me.

Cameron's probably trying really hard to come up with some memorable lines and catchphrases so people actually remember the film this time.

And some memorable set pieces too because I for the life of me can't remember a single one outside of the military dude wrecking stuff in the mech suit. No one ever brings up Avatar in any discussions dealing with favourite lines, favourite action sequences, saddest moments, most badass moments, etc...It's only ever talked about in box office comparisons. It's crazy how a forgettable movie like Avatar crushed it all over the world to almost make $3B.

Hey now, when that big dragon thing flung around those sort-of-helicopter things, that was pretty legit.

I think.
