When I calm down from playing ill out all the posted Helpful Tips & Q&As in the op, but as this is new I thought we could use this thread.

Please share any tips in using the console.

Here's a question from me,

How do you change the record video default length from 30secs to 5mins?

Good thread idea

Don't have an XB1

But I was curious if you could connect external hard drives for watching MP4/AVI files?

I don't think MP3s work though so probably unlikely

Yeah good thread, theres a few kinks in this dash that make me feel like a gaming noob at times.

How do you accept a party invite if you miss pressing the guid button?

How do you leave a party?.

Snap the Game DVR, select end clip then 5 mins as the length. That will give you that last 5 minutes. The "Record That" Voice command only does the last 30 secs

Brill thank you that's perfect!

To be clear I need to use that to get 5mins every time, it does not change the record that to 5mins?

To see invites say "Xbox Notifications"

To quit I think there is also a voice command but you can snap the party app and leave that way

How do I quit a game?
Guide button, select the currently running game, press menu and quit

Think you have to do that everytime yeah.

Has anyone done a console teardown or tried to update the hard drive?

http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Xbox+One+Teardown/19718

I severely doubt you could replace the HDD without jumping through some crazy hurdles both invalidating your warranty and running significant risk of a banned console and/or gamertag

But it is of course a standard HDD. I don't know where you would get the OS file from or whether it checks to see if you're using the correct HDD

One thing that needs to go in OP is, that some features people are looking for are set to off in the OS and need to be activated. From the top of my head:
- party chat (host has to enable this to work)
- surround sound (beta)

Don't think you do. It supports 'play to' so you can send videos to it from a PC, like airplay, but you can't browse from the xbox
Yeah or you can move them to your skydive folder I believe.

It's no where near as good as last gen tho, hope they fix if.

I'm sure this could be very specific to my setup, but I initially couldn't get my X1 to force Full RGB (0-255) or Deep Colour properly.

To get it to work, I had to:

- Switch the Video Output setting from from Auto-HDMI to HDMI.
(Basically disabling Display Discovery)

After that, I had to manually set my resolution and it works fine now.

Its important to note, that it will only work properly, when the TV and the X1 are set to the same settings.

Couple of questions.

1. Is there a way to do gesture controls using the Kinect for menus? Was searching through the UI and couldn't find anything.

2. Is there a Kinect voice command equivalent to the "A" button? There are times when I want to confirm something but I don't know how to without a controller.

I think a general rule is that the menu button is the equivalent of the right click on an OS, it should give you options to interact with the selected items.

For example it took me some time to find this :

How do you change the order of items in your download queue ?
Go to "my games and applications", highlight the pending item that you want to be first, press Menu and select "Install now".

It helps a lot when you have small apps stuck behind a big download like a full game.

Naturally.

My TV runs in PC mode with RGB 0-255 forced.

The problem seemed to be that when the X1 polled my TV for settings, it was reporting back 16-235 for whatever reason.

Manually setting output to HDMI fixed the issue as it no longer tries to pull settings from my TV. It will ouput exactly what I tell it to output.

For the ones wondering. The Skype app isn't actually snappabble, despite MS selling it as one of the bigger points of the console. It will probably come later.

If you are in Australia (or anywhere really) and are wondering "why can't I use the Kinect IR blaster to control my stuff?"
Well it's because you're not American of course. Because disabling this feature makes sense and all.

Anyhow, simply tell your console that you are in the US and you'll be able to use "Xbox On" as well as control your TV.

Is it possible to get the english version of a game from a non-english store? (E.g. can I play Ryse with english voice acting (US/UK) when my console is configured in FR or DE? (I know that I can't purchase games from the US/UK store without an appropriate payment method from that country).

How exactly do I use motion for navigating the home screen? Im waving my hand and nothing...

Hold your Hand Palm out in front of your Body. Depending on the darkness in your man cave, it might take a couple seconds. Then you´ll see a Hand Symbol appear on Screen.

anyone else having no luck getting tv to work?

at first wasnt getting anything, turned out hdmi cable was loose, then I got picture but no audio (no surround receiver). Now im back to noting, just a blank screen, no audio but im not getting the "cant find your tv" error i got originally

any ideas?

also. I never ever get the "Welcome" screen when turning the xbox on from standbye just boots to the ome screen and gives a "welcome back" pop up

Major Nelson just tweeted this:

Same here. I want the huge gamertag swipe every time I login, or power up. I also don't get it when I moved my Xbox and cold booted it. Weird.

Can you organize pins?

Also, my friend is having major problems with his internet and connecting to Xbox One, got him to type the problem out.

"When I first went to set up the wireless internet on Xbox One it caused my internet to cut out everywhere in the house. The first couple of times trying this I just put it down to unreliable internet, but it’s happened without fail each time I’ve tried to do it.

Eventually, after several hours, I lost patience and just hooked my Xbox up directly to the router viable Ethernet cable. This gave my Xbox One internet successfully and I was able to complete the system update and start playing. However, this also caused me to lose internet everywhere else in the house still, and I’ve really no idea why.

I have Sky broadband (not the most reliable in the world, but it’s mostly serviceable and I’ve used the exact same wireless set-up to game without this problem on PS3 and Xbox 360).

Tl;dr – literally every time I turn my Xbox One on it causes me to lose internet everywhere in the house and I have no idea why it's happening.

Stolen from Reddit thread on the same topic:

* Stop apps/games running in the background - Hover on the app or game in the window on your home screen and press the "enter" (three lines) button on your controller. Head over to "quit" and it's done.

* How to use the Xbox One controller's bumper buttons

* How to enable party chat

* During setup, crank up your speakers as loud as they can go during the mic calibration on the Kinect (until it says too loud). Then lower it until you get beneath the threshold.

* You can pause the installation/download of a game/app by pressing the Menu button when hovering over the tile. You can also delete save files and DLC from games this way.

* Some services that don't have native apps yet, like Pandora, work in Internet Explorer because they're built with HTML5.

* Pin websites to your home screen by pressing the Menu button when the tile is selected in Internet Explorer's address bar.

* Double tap the Xbox button to switch focus between a filled tiled and a snapped tile.

* If TV freezes or becomes distorted, return to the homescreen and select the active panel. Press the Menu button and select Quit. Then launch TV again.

* Plug your Xbox 360 into the HDMI in. You can chat and play games with your friends unfortunate enough not to get a One. Easy as saying "Xbox TV" and picking ip the other controller. Also you can wear a 360 compatible headset and play One games while chatting.

* Plug in a USB keyboard before booting the Xbox One and bam! keyboard works!

* You can set up the Xbox One to control your AVR, it's just not in the OOBE. After configuring TV, go to settings, TV and add an AVR.

* charge your controller by plugging the play and charge cable into the wall. only works with Xbox's rechargeable battery.

* this has been discussed in the press, but if you want to get surround sound via HDMI PT, go to TV settings, under Troubleshooting and enable that. it's currently in beta, so YMMV

* rename your console to whatever you want by going under settings, system

* obvious one, check the list of Kinect voice commands http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-one/kinect/voice-commands

* binding a controller: turn it on, make sure Kinect sees the front part of it and press the bind button on the front of the controller. Kinect will see that you're trying to bind a new controller and put the console in binding mode for you. No need to press the bind button on the side of the console, although that still works. Binding via a microUSB cable also works

* To control the party, Snap the Party app and from there you can control chat, invites etc. Remember that Kinect will work as your chat mic if no headset is plugged into the controller. If you do not want Kinect to be your chat mic, go to settings, Kinect and mute Kinect for chat

* The friends model on Xbox One changes, there is no longer the need to accept friends request and you can follow anyone like on Twitter. So follow away folks on the Xbox team: notwen, P3, MajorNelson, e, lollip0p and you know... me :-) we should get a list going. If you do not want to be followed by someone you can block them

Hi guys, this is my first Xbox console and i would like to know how accounts work?

Are xbox live accounts region locked? Because I can change regions all I want on the Xbox One an visit any marketplace, and I don't think Microsoft would like EU players buying all digital stuff on the USA shop.

What's the catch here?

Also, don't know if it worked this way on the Xbox 360 but, are accounts on the same system able to access all games on a console? (like in the PS3)

And finally, If I go to a friends house and login there, can I download my games there? Would be he able to play them with his account?

I just did this.
You have three possible things:
- address you set on your account, which you can Change any old time
- Region of your Marketplace via XBOX.com, you can Change that any old time
- Region of your X1, you can Change that any old time

I just bought a game from the american Marketplace, and Play this in Germany.

Edit: correction, might be that #1, your account via XBOX.com, can only be changed once every three months. But as this has no further consequences I´m Aware of, just use an american adress and be done with it.

I have another, the party system is slick but it's taking some getting used to and maybe its so slick it has some limitations.

I want to be able to be in a party with 5 mates.

4 of us want to play BF4 me and another mate want to play KI but when we try to start is says the party is to big and must be 2 people only.

How do we achieve this? or is this a huge step back for party chat?

I was wondering the same thing.

A very long, extensive FAQ on how and why the party chat works would be greatly appreciated. I'm running into issues and limitations everywhere.

Which way did you do it hammer? This could be handy

^Interesting. I wonder if the games are then still playable if you switch back to UK region, or whether you have to stick to US. Thanks for the info!
