The Xbox was the future -- now it's just a game console

Isn't each system a media box now in days?

They are. I just find it funny that the Xbox One is now being considered as less of a media box with the removal of kinect even though the apps have been removed from the paywall.

Having kinect doesn't do much for the Xbox One as a media box if you previously didn't have an XBL Gold account.

Nobody asked for that future. Kinect is not something the mass majority want for in a gaming console. This is just that, it's a gaming console.

Microsoft failed to make that their first priority with the unveiling. Glad they're taking the right steps forward though.

Sounds like the press is salty now that all their articles at the Xbone's release were all about how "future" it was.

Still don't get how voice commands and gestures that were already on the 360 were somehow "future", especially when I've had voice commands on my phone for who knows how long and the Kinect ones have some pretty shoddy accuracy.

Kinect is incredible tech

Having such a US centric launch didn't do them any favours either. It's no good banging on about all those wonderful tv apps your system has if most of the world can't use them

Windows phones suck
Windows 8 sucks (thank god they brought back the task bar, not it sucks a little less)

Not sure why they kept up with this tiles bullshit with the xbox after the two things above turned out so piss poor

We clearly have a different opinion or you never properly tried WP8(.1) and Windows 8(.1) or gave it a chance. I absolutely love almost everything about it. Going back on a windows 7 pc and not being able to snap stuff etc feels terrible.

OT: It's not like the Kinect isn't working anymore. I'm sure plenty of Indies will create amazing experiences in a while + future apps.

Did not realize this. Has MS commented on how they plan to continue TV functionality without kinect?

IR blaster port on the back of the console. Maybe they will pack one in the box, but I doubt it. They will likely ask that those who want to use it either pick up a Kinect or their own independent IR kit.

I can't understand the hate about the 180 changes.

Xbone was selling so bad that a possible PS2 age was likely to happen and facing that MS fast changed the things to try to avoid this situation.

And some people hate these moves... good moves btw.

I prefer to change the things to have a better future to stay fixed and failed.

There was never a "vision".

There were hundreds of producers and department heads who sat through a lot of internal meetings about microtransactions, trans-media opportunities, and 'the future of monetization'.

And games got talked about at some point, or something.

they should have waited to release it in the future then.

Maybe in the future physical media is not the preferred medium. I know it will be but it's not today.

Metro sucks and I hope it goes away. The sooner the better.

I think they are off the mark. The console is still a media box (even more so now that the apps will be out of the paywall) and there's still the HDMI In port that will make going to a game or media app after watching a TV show fast.

The only thing that the XBO has that the other consoles don't is the HDMI pass through (also more integrated voice commands). And they are playing catch-up with the no paywall for media apps.

Yup, a games console. A console and standard controller. Seems to be exactly what others want the Wii U to be. A console and standard controller - which is what the PS4 is.

People don't want an amorphous "the future", just a way to play games ffs.

My car was the future, now it just gets me to work
My tv was the future, now it just shows images
My microwave was the future, now it just heats up food

Dunno about the Xbox One being the future, but Microsoft had a clear vision for the console pre-E3 that just did not resonate at all. The entire console has now changed.

And now they have to redo the whole UI to be more controller friendly.

I don't think I've ever seen a console miss the mark as much as the X1 did. Maybe the Virtual Boy would be the only other one.

The future is entertainment integration into singular devices. MS just marketed this product to the wrong group. Make the Xbox One and put it on shelves next to cable boxes and DVR's instead of PS4's and it would of been fine. As a game console though, no.

People want powerful video game consoles that happen to a few multimedia features. Not a weak multimedia box that happens to play video games.

Microsoft's all-in-one box of balanced power was not something consumers wanted.

And now that Microsoft has backtracked to such an extreme degree on its original vision, it’s hard to believe any of the company’s other promises about the system’s potential.

Microsoft's "original position" was basically Field of Dreams: If you bundle it, development will come. Unfortunately, development didn't come despite the fact that dev kits were out there and there were developers who had experience with Kinect 1.0. Microsoft seemed oblivious to the fact that developers were already jumping off the Kinect train before Kinect 2.0 was even revealed.

It's not like this decision was sudden. I guarantee Microsoft has an approximation of developers that are bothering with Kinect development. Meanwhile, their own first party development has been lackluster as well. Keeping the price higher for a device that seems to be losing support month-after-month is just silly.

"...now it's just a game console."

People say that like it's a bad thing.

The market, in the end, decides the future. There are no exceptions.

Nintendo's Wii was disruptive technology not just for the market share it stole, but for the imitative efforts it led its competitors to adopt. Microsoft just fell for it much harder than Sony.

At least Nintendo didn't bill the Wii U and the Gamepad as the future. It's an obnoxious marketing gimmick that only works for so long. Plenty of gamers had the opportunity to be unimpressed by camera gaming on the Xbox 360.

This is a complete lie.
Yeah, WP definitely doesn't suck, but it is very limited in what it can do (compared to Android), in my opinion. I like it more than iOS, though.

On topic, MS's vision was not something I wanted to be a part of. Not Kinect, not required online, and definitely not their attempt to kill second hand games.

Part of the "future" is more convenience and having to wear a headset isn't more convenient than just being able to talk normally.

This. Microsoft wanted everyone in your household to eventually use the Xbox as a hub. Spouses, parents, siblings of the gamer wouldn't reach for a headset to change channels, but they might just say "Xbox, Watch Lifetime".

My fiancé actually loves Xbox plus Kinect because now she doesn't have to figure out how to use the remotes to switch from Netflix to cable. "Xbox, Watch Netflix" boom. "Xbox, Watch Bravo" (ugh)...and boom.

Don't see why they would remove it. They have already stated that they will sell kinect separately soon and that more features will get added on to it.

Phil pretty much said that the Kinect alongside Xbox One is "the better experience" in his opinion but he realizes that people just want to play games and nothing more so the new SKU is better suited for them.

I wasn't talking about removing features. I just didn't realize that if you didn't have kinect, the TV functionality goes away too. I'd completely forgotten about the IR blasters

IR blaster port on the back of the console. Maybe they will pack one in the box, but I doubt it. They will likely ask that those who want to use it either pick up a Kinect or their own independent IR kit.

Yeah this was my line of thinking. Was wondering if they had commented on an alternative IR kit. Looks like they haven't. So you (and others who responded) are right. It's either Kinect or nothing.

I don't agree with this article. People wanted a gaming device in the first place, not whatever this guy is talking about.
and one more thing, if the Kinect was actually worthwhile/useful piece of tech, people would seek it out on their own.
