Just sent a bunch of invites. I'll do more later. Need new music ideas (GAF just introduced me to Deltron 3030, which I'm seriously digging, so I have high hopes).

What the hell? The Zune has achievements too? I just got "Bronze Power Listener" for Slayer and Opeth.

Pretty frickin' cool.

Where does that show up?

There are icons on my Zune card and also under "My Recent Activity."

Edit:

Build a reputation within the Zune Social. With this release, you can earn achievement badges in Zune Social that are displayed on your Zune Card. Similar to Xbox LIVE, these are graphical icons on your Zune Card that represent milestones like being the top listener of an artist, passing a specific number of total plays, helping other users in the Zune forums and more.

Ahhh cool.

I'm close to badges for a couple of artists now.

Have they added a way to separate your Zune friends from your 360 friends?

Right now, it seems to merge the two and that annoys me.

Same here. The real annoying bit is on the Xbox, where about 10 of the people I've added don't have a 360.

Has the Zune software always had this cool interface look? I clicked on the album art while the song was playing and it changed the app to look like this:

Pretty cool, thought I'd share.

Yeah, but now the album art loads much faster.

Can you burn songs to CD that you download with the Zune pass? If so, then I can certainly understand why it'd be a deal.

No you can't.

But having a subscription-based music collection has completely changed my attitude about music and music collections in general. I have heard more new music in the past 2 years than I had in the previous 10 just because I can meander through online music collections on a whim.

Random GAFer recommends song, I can usually be listening to it in seconds. If I like it, bam, I've got it. If not, no harm done.

No more CDs getting scratched and stuff - I got rid of all of them.

It's extremely liberating.

It really is so nice to do music this way. I actually have nothing against iPods but they won't even be on my radar until they do a subscription. Music subscription is the best $15 I spend a month and I'm actually about to ditch all but a few of my old CDs it must be like six months since I've last cracked a jewel case and I listen to music close to eight hours a day at work.

Werd

and the day they do subscription. Watch the fuck out now. You'll see a trail of smoke from my zune account.

I accidentally dropped my Zen Vision: M into the toilet which killed it, so i decided to import a 80gb Zune to replace it.

If non American Zune owners want their tracks to be displayed on their Zune card they have to go to Control Panel to change their Current Format to English-United States. You can customise this format to your countries own currency etc, but as long as you keep the format as English-United States then it should work.

For some reason i cant get the albumart of the tracks i played to display on the card, so im assuming its a Zune Pass feature?

(thanks to those who've already added me)

Just as an FYI, I've already been discovering some new music due to the social.

Remembering old favorites, discovering new bands...pretty damn awesome.

Boise Noise and The Whip are the 2 gems that I've recently discovered through the social, and I can't help but think that I never would have discovered these bands had it not been for the social.

I need to make another pass through this thread and add more people!

I actually have a zune 8gb and a zen vision:m. Both can be used with the Zune pass. Also thought people might be interested in this program I made:

http://www.mjefferson.net/2008/05/12/zune-software-customizer-version-25/

Basically it lets you change the color of your zune software, set a custom background, etc.

Um, I just caught the Zune Pass commercial. Is this shit true? $14.95 for unlimited music? How is their music catalog?

Unlimited music...for the most part.

Their catalog is actually really robust, and I find what I'm looking for 95% of the time.

There are situations where MS doesn't have the rights to some songs, and they are not available (I remember I couldn't get Cascada - Everytime We Touch off Marketplace at all). There are also artists who refuse to fall under MS's subscription service. These are the same offenders that you'd expect (to name a few):

- Metallica
- Red Hot Chili Peppers
- Evanesence
- Muse (some of their albums)
- RadioHead

You would have to pay for these albums separately if you wanted them.

You'll also find some artists will not allow you download their most popular songs for free. I can't recall a particular instance of this offhand, but I've definitely come across this.

Like I said, though, 95% of the time it's as simple as clicking download on the song/album and getting it, as much as you'd like.

I filled up 30g's of my Z80 on the first day of getting the thing purely off of Marketplace d/ls. It really is awesome, but you need understand it's limitations.

That's for the heads up. I figured some bands would be against this so that's not surprising. I also knew about the no copy to CD thing.

Would you say it's worth it to buy a Zune for this service? This is exactly what I'm looking for.

So I may have this card thing kinda working.

Thing is, in the app itself it doesn't seem to be updating. But if I go on the site I see the last few songs I played. So if somebody can add me and tell me what they see in the software I'd appreciate it :)

Looks good to me. *high five* for the Frank Black tracks.

Your most recent plays are:

stereo
american gigolo
don't look back in anger
headache
speedy marie
calistan
etc...

Ahh, cool then.

In my software I have no recent plays, and my old card/background etc. It's a bit odd.

lol you're not gonna find 90% of good dance music.

But for the most part these subscription services give me enough of a base of random music that it doesn't matter that i can't find the specific stuff i want sometimes.

My 80 gig is full...something i'd never do without a subscription service.

My Zune is starting to fuck up. The audio keeps going in the left headphone, even with different sets. I may upgrade to an 80gb soon, but I KNOW Zune3 will come out as soon as I do :(

Probably just your headphones.. try a different pair?

I have. Hence "even with different sets"

Of course, putting "of headphones" would have made it a lot clearer, but there you go.

The last time it started happening I accidentally dropped the Zune from a fair height to a hard floor, and it kinda fixed it for awhile. Maybe I should try again.

Ohhh... bad reading comprehension. Hmm that sucks. Are you pretty rough on your electronics? I am always dropping my mp3 players, so I'm wondering how long I'm going to be able to use this 80GB Zune before it breaks. Dropped twice so far and still ticking, but I know I've just been lucky.

I've had it for about...a year and a half now I think. So it's lasted as long as any other MP3 player I've had.

They basically live in my pocket for 5-10 hours a day, so I can be pretty rough on them, yeah. It's still usable so long as I'm careful not to have the connector knocked at all while I'm listening, so I may just hold out for awhile until the new ones are announced. I'll definitely be sticking with the Zune brand methinks.

Yeah, many thanks broadwayrock.

Also, I've just realised I have a 14 day trial code for Zune Pass! I have to say, it's rather cool, I'm enjoying going "first 3 seconds sounds good, I'll 'ave that". Any other unused trial cards will be appreciated. :P

Thanks to ZuneGAF I will always be kept up to date on anything and everything that is MUSE. :P heheh

Keep those Zune cards coming! Its pretty cool checking out what everyone is listening to on the regular.

I'm really liking Zune Social. I got a new 80GB Zune a couple of days ago and it's so cool just browsing people's collections while I'm at work and picking the stuff I like, and adding it right to my collection. Zune has basically got me locked in for life; this with the Zune Pass means I won't consider another brand of MP3 player.

Just got into the Social and got a Zune Pass and HOLY SHIT! This is the greatest thing ever! I've already discovered four new really cool artists through my friends. And I love the fact the ease of everything. Just pull a friend's card onto the player when connected an voila, new and exciting music.

Zune tramples the competition (hardware and service providers). This is ridiculously awesome! FUCK! YEAH! WOOO! :D

And thanks TheGreatDave, for introducing me to Primus!
