NYT article

Like a lot of experts have suggested from the beginning - this isn't about Trump being a Russian puppet (FSB no doubt know he's too stupid to control) - but instead a likely plan to utterly undermine US democracy.

They could drag the trials out for years, slowly leaking details, and keep the headlines dominated on whether or not Trump is an illegitimate president.

In my non-expert opinion, this is what my gut has been telling me. Whether the US intelligence community discovered it or not, wouldn't have mattered. They've already won. If they feel like they can do more damage by confirming the stories out there, they will.

I imagine it going like this.

But yeah I think if the CIA reports are accurate this all fits. Putin intended to undermine the US political system not necessarily just making Trump win, he didn't expect to succeed on that either. Now that it's happened though they might think they can double the damage by outing these, while at the same time denouncing these people as traitors allows his regime to wash blame? That kind of thing used to be standard practice back in the day.

Someone call Jack Bauer to give Trump the mole treatment. I mean, black sites are back so Jack should be one phone call away.

I know this is an unimportant nit-pic, but The Rebekah Mercer in Xena was actually a different person with the same name.
Whoops. Sorry. Probably faked #fakenews deliberately planted to implicate the fakeness of the true information here lol.

Yep. It's possible that this is a brilliant "win-win" situation, either way:

1. Trump is able to drop sanctions, and Russia attempts to infiltrate American hegemony with seemingly benign diplomacy

2. If Trump fails to drop the sanctions, Russia can inflict a far more brutal wound on America (worse than Watergate) that will bolster Putin's political standing, despite the longer and more challenging road it will then have to take to improve the country's economic standing

Putin dialing it up to 11, revealing that a 'rogue' group put Trump in the house? Man that would be some plot twist. But also efficient collateral to ensure the sanctions are lifted.

Also, it can be no coincidence that these arrests allegedly happened already in December, but only come out now. Nobody leaked them until now, so quite clearly the Russian government themselves would be the ones releasing the information. Either because they are about to start a show, or tighten pressure to drop sanctions.

When you can't compete with the US through strength of arms, erode everything else and let them collapse under their own weight.

Tightening the thumbscrews.

Russia Federal Agents Suspected of Treason Reportedly Passed Secrets to the CIA

The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) agents arrested for treason and illegal hacking reportedly passed confidential information to the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, sources close to the investigation told the news agency Interfax.

Sergei Mikhailov, a top cybersecurity specialist in the FSB, and his deputy Dmitry Dokuchaev are being accused of “breaking their oath and working with the CIA,” Interfax reported, citing an anonymous source that did not specify if Mikhailov and Dokuchaev worked directly with the CIA or through intermediaries.
