Everyone seems to have their opinion. My co worker tells me thick is out, and skinny is the new hotness, Is one better than the other?

Depends on your frame, face, shirt collar and lapel size.

It's pretty easy to spot a trend jumper wrt this as they often pair a wispy 1" wide tie with the standard 3" lapel and what not. The second image looks off for this reason.

You need to be really skinny to pull off a skinny tie. If you have muscle mass or a bit of fat, you look ridiculous. Also if you're older, they just don't work.\

Also the guy in the first pic looks more slick but also professional, the guy in the bottom picture just looks like he came out of a private high school :/

The first looks like babby's first tie the knot is hideously large and the other will get you laughed out of a serious board meeting.

this is a proper look for a tie and suit.

Skinny ties make for a tiny knot, which often looks silly with a standard-collar shirt. Your ties should also fall to your belt buckle.

I was going to say it looks like when I flubbed my first tie in middle school and was real proud of the big ass knot I had left.

I have never liked skinny ties, they look goofy. That said the thick one in the OP is way too much. There is a middle ground that is perfect.

Just depends on the lapel of the jacket you are wearing. If no jacket, I prefer a slim/skinny tie. I have a couple of skinny knit ties that I always get compliments on.

One of the few times I've seen someone pull of the "thick tie" and it not look ridiculous.
