Things that instantly turn you off from games.

In shooters I hate how some developers don't allow you to see your own feet. When Halo 2 did this it was so awesome. I hate feeling like I'm just a floating gun. Dunno why it isn't in more games.

In multiplayer titles, when the online interface and infrastructure seems like its from 2003. Going back to Halo 2 again. Their party and lobby system was revolutionary and yet some developers still do some archaic shit. I want to lobby up with my friends and have my party stay together. The standard was set in 2004. Get with the times.

For about three seconds the other day I contemplated maybe, sortof possibly picking up that new Dynasty Warriors game. I hadn't played one in like a billion years so I figured I'd at least check out the OT and see whats new.

I then saw THIS VIDEO at random.

I don't know if you could magnetically repulse me from a game, at the speed of light, more than that video. Its just perfectly horrible in every way.

In fact, if I ran Guantanamo Bay I'd just have this playing on repeat, all day and all night until everybody cracked. Anybody who got through the week with their sanity intact would be sent home with a bundt cake (but we'd still tap their phones).

Could I get my bundt cake up front, so i could eat it while i watch? ^_^;

I don't mind soldiers/military in games. Actually in the right cinematic context, it can be a cool element. I love Metal Gear. I occasionally enjoy a good heroic military FPS.

But there's a kind of unaware and blatant militarism in certain games that just makes me gag. Modern Warfare 1 didn't have it, but MW2 did.

What does that even mean? I wish people would elaborate. There's different art styles used in anime.

People that are against any and all anime art styles are probably can't tell the difference. And personally I'd never take their opinions seriously.

And there's people against boss fights here? Really? Do you guys just hate video games and everything that makes them good?

Poor controls are probably my biggest pet peeve. Atrocious dialogue will do it for me too, even though I'm not a story-driven gamer.

If I had to wager a guess: It has nothing to do with art style and everything to do with negative connotations that surround anime. In general, the people I've met who say this only say so because they just don't want people to think they're an otaku or some nonsense of that ilk.

Personally, I'd hate to let art style of all things push me to not play a game. Good style is great and can score a game major bonus points, but it's just gravy, I've never played a stellar game and said "Wow, this is amazing, too bad the art is bad, guess I'll never play it again."

Anything with a story or long cutscenes. I just want something I can fire up for 5 minutes at a time.

Jazz.

Goblins, skeletons, wizards, magic and elves...shit like that usually gets on my goat but Ghouls n Ghosts, Castle Crashers and Oblivion are alright with me.

Inconsistent frame rates and tearing too.

Edit: And excessive swearing, sounds corny and stupidly forced in games.

bad controls
swimming levels
bad hit detection
lag/netcode
crappy menus
cut-scenes you cant pause or skip
required training missions
snipers

Can´t stand bad music in a game. Even playing the game with the sound off and some other music on the background won´t do it for me either.

I'm amazed at how many people here have this viewpoint. And to think I used to take this place seriously, SMH.

Really? I love anime and even I accept that it's really not for everyone.

- Time limits

- Restrictive or sluggish movement. Can't get in to 2D fighters for this reason.

- Really quick and unnatural character animations

- Empty or repetitive worlds, no matter the size

- No Pokemon

That weird pedo-stye of anime with girls who look like they are 14 but have giant boobs.

Stealth/escort missions

Seeing the words "metal gear" or "final fantasy" on it.

Anything F2P

Anything with a western fantasy art style.

Time limits

I'm amazed at how many people here have this viewpoint.

Me too honestly. I didn't expect that many people to say any kind of anime art style turns them off. Part of me wishes they'd be more specific about why, but it's probably better off being just they don't like it.

Mine would most-likely be F2P or microtransactions.

While I wouldn't go that far I do agree it's pretty crazy that a general style alone can kill a game (and not just extreme forms of it like Dragon's Crown), especially one as prevalent as anime style. Aren't you eliminating yourself from most Japanese games?
No Final Fantasy, no Bravely Default, no Persona, no Project Diva, no 2D fighters like Blazblue, hell even Mega Man?

Not everyone that dislikes it in games dislikes it altogether. And even if that were the case, don't you think you should wait for a real reason to completely write a person off? Maybe something a little less incredibly shallow than "they don't agree with me".

Emo main characters.

Any combination of the following in the title: dark, fall, darkness, shadow, night.

In-app purchases

Escort missions

Most western AAA games

Games that try to be movies. It was cool when metal gear solid did it, now it's annoying.

About the anime point thing, there is no 'anime style'. What I assume people are talking about is moe fanservice stuff, which applies to me since I hate that garbanzos, but don't try to be cool and dismiss 'anime'. Otherwise you're saying that you hate anything that's Japanese that doesn't have realistic graphics.

It is hard for people who aren't into anime to clarify. We dont know the terms, what a waifu or moe is, etx. For me at least:

Good anime in games: No No Kuni, Pokemon, Valkyria Chronicles, Persona 4,

Bad anime in games: Atelier games, Senran Kegura, Project Diva, anything Dragon Ball.

"Gameplay" trailers that don't actually feature any gameplay. Really sets up my expectations for the kind of game they're going for.

Also games that take away your control over every little thing.

Time limited gameplay mechanics. I don't want to be rushed, and it doesn't ever add the atmosphere it's supposed to convey.

You know, the thing where, as soon as you find out the game has it or is it, you don't want to play the game anymore. No thought or rationality is involved here, you just lose interest immediately.

I don't expect there to be any attempt for you to defend your gaming turnoffs, as they are almost by definition irrational turnoffs that don't take into account counter-examples.

Okay, let's begin.

For me:

-Anything with an anime art style.
-Anything on a handheld or smartphone.(just not comfortable to play)
-Scantily-clad woman on front cover (this just screams "pandering to 13-year-olds")
-Motion controls (stopped playing the Wii after 2007 because of this)
-MMOs
-Generic title, like "Rise of the" or "Reckoning" or "Unleashed" or "Evolution" or what have you
-Zombies

So, GAF, how about you? What "features" virtually ensure that you'll never play a game?
Same as you

But what if it turns out to be fun anyway? Are you just saying you don't like games that aren't fun?

Games should always be fun. Shouldn't they? They're games! But "fun" is subjective. For example, if a game has an interesting story, I can overlook its mechanics - and vice versa. I guess what I should have said is that I feel games should focus less on pretty looks and more on game mechanics, telling a story, and the like. Then again, I know people who play Crysis (a game I don't necessarily think of as "fun") just to stare at the environment, so what do I know? ;-) I guess my definition of "gameplay" is fairly loose. I consider a game like The Wolf Among Us to have "fun" gameplay, despite not ever feeling any sort of rush from over-the-top action. In any case, I hope that helps. I'm not sure how well I articulated my thoughts, but I tried!

  • F2P
  • Mobile
  • Voxels
  • Flash animation style graphics
  • No achievements/trading cards
  • Saturday morning cartoon VA in an English dub
  • Long loading times
  • Microtransactions
  • Cheaters/hackers in multiplayer
  • Long, hand-holdy tutorials
  • Stealth mechanics/sections where the segment/mission ends if you are spotted

Somehow, I'm still a fan of videogames

I think I have only a couple of things that makes me want to turn off games.

-Unskipable cutscenes/dialogues (sometimes I'm not in the mood, or have no interest on the game story, or I'm replaying an old game... also, I think it's pretentious to try to force the story down your throat)
-Slow text (playing Skyward Sword was painful some times)
-Very evident framerate drops (Sonic racing transformed on the Vita and Enslaved on the PS3 are recent examples)
-Very evident AI rubberband (sports games, mostly. Fuck you, FIFA 13)
-Long and unskipable tutorials.

oh boy, you're gonna hate this gen.

Back when anime was not mainstream and not as annoying and crappy as it is the last 10 years.

What anime is you avatar from?

Anyway, to answer the OP, the things that instantly turn me off from video games are:

- FPS games. I use to enjoy them back in the day (Doom, Quake, Goldeneye), now not a single shred of interest.

- Games with no colour. This is probably my biggest turn off because video games have to be visually appealing for me to take any interest. If a game has dark, gritty or rough colours its an instant turn off.

- Time limits. They're not a 'bad' thing, some games just really don't need them.

- Shitty frame rates.
