Things to do and see in Amsterdam?

I just spent a week and a half in amsterdam. Uhh, I could give you recommendations on coffeeshops. :D The Abraxas is probably my favorite.

Walking aroud the redlight at night is really fun, as someone else said. It's funny watching some of the guys/groups of guys interact with the hookers. Also, skip the expensive live sex shows and go to the strip tease place. Same stuff, but a lot cheaper. :)

Oh, and most hotels don't have airconditioning, unless you're paying upwards of 200euros or more.

Don't eat weed cake, it could kill a horse and it's basically a sedative. Can't do shit all after weed cake even speaking is hard. I saw some highschoolers from Britain come over and they all got 1 piece each while the lady recommended half each, I was going to warn them but i didn't want to ruin the surprise.
I tried several weed/hash cakes, or ''space cakes'', and none of them did anything for me. And before this trip I'd only smoked weed twice.

Go to the Rijkmuseum(sp??) for the showing of Rembrandt's ''Nightwatch''......the presentation of the painting is unbelievable. They use lighting to make the painting come alive and look 3D and whatnot.

Keep a good map on you AT ALL TIMES. It's a f*ckin hard as hell city to navigate, despite how relatively small it is, becuase of the layout, IMO. It took me a good few days to just get used to where everything is in relation to each other.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I just arrived in London, and it's frikkin hot here and my apartment has no AC! And on top of that I had to go out and buy an adaptor for my laptop.

It seems it'll be just as hot in Amsterdam. I'll check out some of the mentioned places, and report back!

It's very hot in Holland at the moment. We have our second 'hittegolf' of the year! :lol
But it's getting a little bit colder tomorrow, with some rain in the evening.

Have fun! And order a 'kroket' and 'frikandel'.

And try some 'drop':

And don't forget to visit the Vondelpark!

This thread reminds me that I really need to go to Amsterdam some time again soon. It was one of the finest holidays I've ever spent. Such an open minded city.

Ahhh the memories...

I think it's because the 3 canals that radiate out from the centre, Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht (in alphabetical order from centraal station out, which is nice for remembering) all bend more than you think they do when you walk around them, when I first got here I always tried to keep a mental picture of where central station was in my head and it would always come out flat wrong.

I've only been once (for 2 weeks), but Amsterdam is probably my favorite city in the world.

I just loved walking around and exploring for hours on end. The Red light district is hilarious at night.

since it's so hot here right now i can recommend going to our little city beach called blijburg, although it will get pretty crowded http://www.blijburg.nl/ just take tram 26 from central station.

or chill at the roof of NEMO just next to the central station, with a very nice view:

for a nice not so expensive restaurant i can recommend A-Fusion close to the central station and the red light district: http://www.hiptravelguide.com/amsterdam/php/reviews-240.html

if your in amsterdam and like to go to a nice party this saturday: Girls Love DjÂ’s in Panama

And then you can hear the horror thats called "Toppertje!" from Tropical Danny and Guillermo. :lol

I know one of the bargirls at Panama, never been though, what kind of place is it? I got the feeling from her that it's a very fancy place, where a door bitch will be employed etc. Also, are those beanbags on nemo a feature or just there from the photo?

I keep meaning to take a few beers up there what with the heatwave and all, if there is beanbags that could be the ticket!

Also for great take away thai go to the snack bar on Zeedijk, it's quite cheap and delicious. Watch out because on the board they normally have a daily special which will be 7.50 rather than 9 euro.

Zeedijk is easy to find it runs between centraal station and the newkmarkt castle. you know you are on it because of all the asian shops (It's amsterdams china town kinda) also there is a shit load of junkies there.

Couple of other things to note for a foreigner coming, the junkies, while shit, are never dangerous (usually to slow moving to be dangerous :lol) violent crime is very low. Also, coming with only english is no problem, EVERYONE speaks english in Amsterdam. Which is great but quickly becomes frustrating when trying to learn dutch :lol

I also found that most people don't like to be asked if they speak english (spreekt u Engels?). The few times I tried it I always got "Yes of course I speak english" or similar. Maybe if you go other places in holland that is more neccessary I'm not sure, but Central Amsterdam, don't bother.

ugh, I hate Amsterdam. The city is just too damn old, can't stand it there!

Nooooooooooooooo
man, last time i was in there a load of british merchant navy guys were coming up to me going "MAN-CHES-TAAAA F*CKING MAN CHES TAAAA" all night.

I had no idea what on earth was going on - until i said "NOOO I LIVE IN LOOOONDOOOOOON"

apparently, the thought i was a "Dutch c***" and were trying to intimidate me by shouting Manchester at me... :/

ah well, was a nice club - had a great time beyond the merchant navy boys - sad stuff :/

One more thing. As a dark skinned person, should I expect different treatment, or is it like other big cities in the west?

And is the j in words like blijburg pronounced like an 'ai'? So bly-burg? And the u in word like 'dank u' is it like 'ooh' or 'you'? Thanks.

yep, like bly-burg.

and no i think Amsterdam is one of the better multicultural cities to live in with thanks to our colonial past (without i wouldn't excist :) )

if you would like to go to a big multi-cultural festival with a lot of good food try Kwakoe, it takes place every weekend until the 6 of august in the south east part of amsterdam. http://www.kwakoe.nl/index.php?id=1320
