Things you DON'T like about GTA IV

As amazing as it is, it's not perfect. In fact, some of it's pretty damn annoying! Here are some issues that i've run into (no spoilers or TEH SYSTEM WARZ, please!):

1. The GPS. It makes learning the city's layout harder because you're always looking at it. Good thing you can turn it off.
2. Too many calls. Too many times have I wanted to do something specific and on my way there i'll get a call or text message asking me to do something else. My map has too many icons.
3. Hanging out. Building friendships is cool and all but it gets repetitive.
4. No on-screen clock. "Pick up Roman by 10:00AM"... ok, so what time is it now? Oh, I have to pause the game every time I want to check the time now? Fuck off.
5. You can't run while talking on the phone. I was running from the police, answer a call, and then Niko starts casually walking. The cops catch up and I miss the call.
6. My controller, it's supposed to rumble. You vibrate when you get laid but not when you crash head-first into a concrete divider.

Worrying about pissing off my girlfriend in GTA4 by ignoring her calls reminds me too much of pissing off my girlfriend irl by ignoring her calls this week while I play GTA4.

Just bring up your phone it has the time on it.

I bought it expecting to trade it after a while. Now I'm going to have to keep the son of a bitch. So much fun, and I've hardly even stepped off the goddamn porch. I want RPG devs to watch what this game does - it has a society, not just a population.

DEAD RISING STRIKES AGAIN

GTA: OTIS

close quarters control. Niko can't turn on a dime, plus I always fucking hit the L3 button to crouch on accident, so chasing someone down an alley is always a pain in the ass.

That won't stop me from putting 100+ hours into the game.

Everything else works great. I'd give it a 10 (no, not perfect, but its better than the sum of its parts). Can't wait to open up the rest of the map.

The controls and camera. What's the point of letting you control the camera with the right stick if it is going to reset its position whenever you move? And why do I have to hold X in order to run? If I wanted to walk, I should be able to do that by slightly moving the analog stick.

I wish the phone was easier to read. Needs more contrast or something.

(Even on a HDTV)

I dont understand this.

I have no problem whatsoever with the phone, but everyone keeps bitching about this.

The problem I do have and that no one else seems to have is that I cant see shit on my radar. The icons are way too small. I always have to bring up the map and zoom on it to see what the icons are representing.

That really sucks. Especially in MP.

Also, this. A patch seriously needs to come for the camera reset thing.

No it's hard to make things out on the map. Especially, e.g., weapons in multi. Like you I haven't had problems seeing anything else, including cell phone text.

The soundtrack, the melee combat, the map interface, the low quality of the cutscenes, the load times, the pop-up, the low framerate....

Plenty not to like here...

This. Plus I am pretty disappointed so far in the soundtrack and of course the freezing.

Both of these points. The controls/camera seriously piss me off.

When I look @ the phone screen from my couch, it looks like one gray square.

I have to lean fwd and squint to make it out. It's like Gray on Dark Gray.

(I have 20/10 vision FWIW)

I'm not a fan of the soundtrack in this version, the car cameras, the car handling seems to be worse, and it's really hard for me to tell what the buildings are on the side of the road. In previous version it was easy to see "AMMO" on the side of the building. I find myself just relying on GPS.

Crackdown had a better on-foot control system.

No doubt... as I feared, it's kind of hard to go back to controlling a slow, earth-bound GTA character after the kind of freedom and jumping ability that Crackdown offered.

two billion threads about it

.

There are currently 9 threads on the front page alone, over half of which could go into the official thread (like "Things you DON'T like about GTA IV" - CAUSE YOU COULD NEVER TALK ABOUT THAT IN THE OFFICIAL THREAD NUH-UH, NO WAY!).

Well, I mean, besides that freedom the actual movement of the character w.r.t. the camera system is retarded. It feels like playing fucking RE1 compared to RE4:Wii.

Is it me or the audio quality very low fi, like they use 128kbps mp3, wtf man, this is next gen!

I noticed that too. The dialogue quality seems really bad at times. Almost makes me wish I was just running the sound through my TV so it would be less noticeable. Dialogue volume issue mentioned earlier doesn't help things. fwiw this is all just nitpicking as i quite like the game.

The fact that I have to wait another week for it. Then again that's the price I pay for importing the Amazon exclusive Special Edition.

Yeah, GTA4 is a great example of a 10-is-not-perfect case. The game will likely remain above even OOT for me, but there's always flaws. OOT had tons of flaws too.

Not able to enter more buildings, lack of use of Car Boots, chains setup ala Cluckin Bell and Burger Shot like the fuel stations and banks, and they are not used?

Other then that, its fantastic.

I haven't played it yet, but this kind of reminds me of when MGS3 came out. I picked up the controller and I was like GODDAMNIT WHY DO THEY STILL NOT GET IT.

Are the controls that bad?

If by "that bad" you mean largely the same, yes.

I had this exact problem in saints row, never really learned the city because I was being guided the whole time. I'm definitely turning it off.

You can disable your phone so that the plot doesn't progress, and people won't 'need' you without your discretion.

4. No on-screen clock. "Pick up Roman by 10:00AM"... ok, so what time is it now? Oh, I have to pause the game every time I want to check the time now? Fuck off.
I think you can check the time on the phone; there's usually ample time to reach your destination.

In the beginning I thought combat was way too easy. Then I disabled auto-aim, it really changes the dynamic of the gunfights. I recommend it for added challenge.
