Things you still can't believe actually happened in video gaming

The Geist thread: perfect confluence of DetectiveGAF and DeveloperGAF, even more amazing than cloudbush.

How in the hell did I miss this thread? I don't understand half of it, I'm still only halfway.

To answer the OP: thinking about it, probably the fact that Nintendo created their biggest competitor after backing out of a deal of Sony, and said competitor kicked the original Nintendo sworn enemy of the game and made Sega go software only with their second console, which is the biggest platform of all time sales-wise. Oh, and that in turn created a new competitor who loves the letter X to the bone.

Pretty crazy when you think about it.

Bayonetta 2 coming, and to a Nintendo system, it was a bit shocking.

DmC instead of DMC 5, but that was rumored for awhile before the announcement.

While im not that familiar with it, Conkers Bad Fur Day must have been unbelievable at the time.

And i guess the Wii

The death of turn-based.

Will it ever come back? The answer will determine whether or not I ever care about modern gaming, again.

When it first came out on the GameCube, I never would have believed that Animal Crossing would become a huge franchise, never mind get a sequel.

Prolific Japanese games coming to Steam and visual novels being localized and selling in the West (999 and VLR selling MORE in the West especially).

Hyrule warriors, Layton vs. Ace attorney, Kingdom hearts, cRPG renaissance, Square Enix betrayal, silent hill 2 depth, the world ends with you gameplay style, Mr. T on a WoW comercial, eSports,...
My expectarions have been surpassed just so many times.

Guillermo Del Toro was actually working on a Silent Hill game.

Sucks that it's most likely cancelled. I guess the universe decided it was too good to exist.

NEVER say that. In our universe, the Governor of California was a former Mister Universe winner who was also two Terminators and Conan the Barbarian and killed a Predator...and subsequently wrote a Comment and Analysis piece in New Scientist magazine.

When anything seems too incredible to ever happen, I just think of Ahnold and my mind re-blows itself, and I know we live in a universe of infinite possibility.

SEGA conference, E3 1995.

Duke Nukem Forever actually releasing, and being a pretty entertaining game. (I platinumed it)

DNF actually was a fun game, but it was a 2004 game that released in 2011.

The fact that lot of non hentai VN got localized in the west.
Localization and dubbing become better.
Steam happening.
Gamergate, shit is embarassing yo.

I still can't believe SEGA went third party or that the Dreamcast died.

The latter came out of nowhere for me since I didn't really keep up with SEGA news at the time, even though I owned the console and loved the games I had for it. I had no clue the system was bombing until the very last moment, and I couldn't imagine at the time why such an awesome console would have support dropped for it.

I loved my Dreamcast, and was sad when Sega finally pulled the plug, but it flopping wasn't really much of a surprise if you listened to people at the time. The general population was simply waiting for the PS2, and wouldn't even give Dreamcast a second thought. That, and no EA Sports.

Dennis Dyack tryna Kickstart.

Although I did really want Eternal Darkness 2 more than almost any other game I can think of (besides Shadow of the Colossus 2).

As said earlier in the thread. The nastiness of last year which spawned a movement that we all know who.

Almost drove me away from gaming as I didn't want to be associated in any way with those who only bought negative attention to my beloved hobby.

Sega games & Tekken being multiplatform.

Also, we're now playing games with (PS1-PS2 era) CGI quality graphics, it officially started with The Order and I think it's absolutely amazing.

Id say arguably much better than most of that era's CG. I think it started with God of War 3's Kratos model
GOW3

GOW2 CG model

But yeah any PS4 game Ive put in has far surpassed a lot of PS2 era CG....I think FFX and Onimusha 3 have still to be beat

It's been mentioned a lot, but the Xbox One reveal. The rumors were out there, but nobody believed that Microsoft would be so comically evil that they'd try to sell a console with always-on DRM. Until they did.

So many major gaming news sites declaring "gamers are dead" in a single day. Talk about stupidity. At least I've saved a lot of time since then by avoiding their clickbait.

I take it you didn't actually read those gamers are dead articles? Honestly, the resulting backlash that's still going on today with GG is more unbelievable. Not the backlash part, just how long it has gone on.
