Things you want to see in Nintendo's next handheld

-No region locking
-Better battery
-Some sort of controller support

That last one is a dream but maaaaaaaaaaaaan that would be awesome.

I'd be extremely happy if it's region free.

I just want the resolution to at least be 480p. I still want the clam shell design, as long as this one protects the screen instead of damaging it like the 3DS. Screen size should be about 3DSXL size.

Because Nintendo could spend that money on a better screen or GPU instead. Honestly having a second screen adds very little to the experience. It's gimmicky and a waste of the R&D budget. They could also get rid of the mic and camera for the same reason. Just focus on the things that actually matter.

For me the two things which most need improving in Nintendo handhelds are better graphics and a completely overhauled VC/online system.
They shouldn't get rid of the camera, they should make it better. Whenever I'm at a zoo or somewhere I always see kids using their 3DSs to take pictures.

No region locking.

The most wanted feature.

Other than that, I always like BC and I'd like them to continue the trend of 3D gaming. Better graphics are always expected, and I'm expecting a sizable jump.
Unified account system is a definite as well.
edit: Oh, and no online subscriptions!

- Price should match the system's performance. Currently only 2DS hits that sweet spot because it is being sold so cheap. The 3DS is just really expensive for what you get in terms of pixel output imo.

Screw it, let's add a 3rd screen.

It can't be a 3rd screen because then it be confusing with the 3DS. They have to skip three screens. Three screens isn't cool. You know what's cool? Four screens.

I want the option to project the top screen on a television. Too many games would be enjoyable with an audience on my 3DS (Smash, Kid Icarus, Fire Emblem, etc), it's a shame I don't have the ability to do so.

-1 screen setup with touch controls
One large screen.
- single screen, high quality screen
- A single, high resolution screen

I really hope it has two screens, TBQH.

Everyone more or less wants a Nintendo Vita.

I really don't.

The top and bottom screens to be the same size.

I do want that, more or less.

6 inch super amoled display, ppi 500+

2 analog control sticks

10 hours battery life

Web browser compatibility (mozilla, chrome, ect)

Edit. 1440p minimum

1 higher quality screen.

Dual analog sticks.

Analog triggers.

Better ergonomics.

Powerful enough to have GC games on virtual console.

Same platform hardware as their console so games can easily be ported to both machines. Or some hybrid system. That's the only way either of their platforms would have enough games for me to buy since I don't love all their franchises.

1.Dual analog sticks, Nintendo prides itself on gameplay but cripples its developers control schemes by not giving them the dual analog sticks that they need, there is absolutely no excuse not to have it.

2.One 720p screen, no more 3D, no more dual screens, no more motion controls, just games now.

To be honest I really just want better multitasking. I would love to have two screens still but they seem wasted. Multitasking would be awesome with the two screens. Then I'd like to see more voice/video chat functionality.

  • Keep the dual screens. Allows for smoother gameplay in most aspects, particularly RPGs.
  • Dual analog sticks or BUST, Ninty.
  • Cross-buy and cross-play
  • That's all. Keep making quality games and I won't care about any other crappy gimmicks Nintendo incorporates.

I can't go back to a time before gyro aiming.

- No region-locking
- Keep the two screens and have them both be widescreen
- Complete backwards compatibility with 3DS games and DS games
- A large VC catalog at launch, no starting over again. Once you're logged in to your NNID, you can download any NES, GB, GBC, GBA, Game Gear, and SNES games you bought on 3DS or Wii U.
- Dual analog sticks
- NO SOFTWARE DROUGHT

Keeping two screens is absolutely essential. I'd rather have terrible resolution again then regressing to a single screen. Pokemon will always look and run terribly, Fire Emblem needs the convenience, and Zelda and Kid Icarus already look good enough.

Kill region locking. No reason for that to stay. All digital games playable on both the handheld and console need cross-buy. And if there isn't physical backwards compatibility, we still need to be able to transfer over our 3DS digital games. If they have to make it a Wii -> Wii U situation, fine. Just let us keep them. Make the screens the same size this time. Much easier to make good use of them that way.

Wait, what? People are asking for one screen? What the fuck?
I just want the standard improvements. Give me a 3ds, with better graphics, better OS, maybe more buttons/dual analog, and a new pokemon game.

480p screen.

Modular controls as in this patent: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=811351

I like modular controls because it would help solve the problem of being locked into one set of controls for the entire life of a handheld. It's easy enough to release a new controller for a home console, but Nintendo and third parties could release new control modules for Nintendo's next handheld with this kind of setup. Is someone making a game that needs more face buttons? Then just release a module that adds more buttons.

I hope Nintendo does go all out with this idea. I think in order to keep their handhelds relevant in a world of smartphones, they need to double down on what makes a handheld video game system unique, and more so than anything else, that's physical controls.

USB Type C connector for power. At minimum old style micro USB.

I'd be fine with a 480p screen. But make the thing fucking comfortable this time. Original GBA was the last one that had any god damn ergonomics.

I don't know why people still want two screens.

Two screens on a handheld was just a way to combat having small screens back when the DS was designed. In this day and age they are totally pointless. You can have one larger screen that can also be a touch-screen. We shouldn't let old restrictions cross over generations.

What I ideally but realistically want:

No region lock.
Backwards compatible with DS and 3DS.
Dual Screens, equal size, modern multitouch, both 720p.
NFC.
3D.
Streetpass.
Micro SD, 32gb included.
VC with all prior handhelds, and all consoles up to N64 represented.
Dual analogue.
4 shoulder buttons.
Crossbuy automatically via NNID.
Works as a console controller.

What I pessimistically expect:

Region locked.
Backwards compatible with 3DS only.
Dual Screen, top bigger than bottom, single touch, stylus using, old style touchscreen, 480p.
NFC.
Micro SD, 8gb included.
No VC at launch.
Dual Circlepad.
4 shoulder buttons.
Very rare crossbuy via codes not a unified.
NNID account.
NO interactivity with console.

Two screens is a must, sorry. Many games just wouldn't be the same without it.

I am pretty sure that was not the case at all. I believe it was influenced by the move to a clamshell design.

I'd kill to have a Virtual Console subscription service. There are so many classic games I adore, but paying $7 for a gameboy game is ridiculous.

All these people crying for a Nintendo Vita.

Two screens
Clam shell
No region lock
Affordable
Pokemon and/or Mario at launch

Like a 3DS, but without the top part (looks like GBA with dual analog).

The top part you can use your cellphone. When you fix it on that DS, it will become the top Screen (it will utilize only the screen, not the hardware)

You can use it apart, but you can combine both to became one hardware in your pocket.

-Being able to transfer my Wii U games to it.

The only reason I'm getting Super Metroid and Earthbound are for the day I can play them on handheld.

-Actual Games at launch

Although it is nary a faint dream for many now, and yes, some here adopted the 3ds years afterwards, I remember the drought of games at the beginning of the 3ds.

-More remakes

I very much enjoyed the N64 remakes at the beginning of the 3ds life, and thought it would be a constant deal in between games until it stopped (With exception of MM).Remakes are great for people such as I who entered gaming late.

If they just keep making the same things they've been making, sales will continue to fall and the audience will continue to shrink.

They have to do something different with the next one.

Not to mention smartphones are quantum leaps in performance over the 3DS. Google and Apple don't seem to interested in portable gaming, but if they ever do, Nintendo is fucked.

Single screen, no 3D, 720p would do. Don't skimp on the SoC, there are so many good off the shelf ones available now, no excuses to go with something obscure and low performance. If it launches in 2016, at least quad Cortex A15 like performance, A57 preferred.

I want a 1080p screen, but I know I won't get it. = P

I want to say 1080p but I'm trying to drop expectations closer to reality, as you know whatever prehistoric hardware Nintendo puts in this thing will corner cut somewhere and some sub-100 dollar tablet will come out and eviscerate shortly thereafter. I'm not even sure about saying 720p, despite the fact how insanely cheap a screen like that in a mobile size must be right now. I've got that shred of doubt in me tucked away so I can be totally not surprised when it's fitted with a 360p/480p display.

My general desires are pretty low, though, the actual asset quality in games could still lag far behind as I'm very cool with idling around in a PS2++ era of fidelity for Japanese games so long as the image quality attempts to join us in the current decade.

Slim chance of that happening in my opinion given that there is no precedent or hint of that being a possibility, but would be nice yes.
No precedent? Every Nintendo handheld before the 3DS wasn't region locked for physical media. Unless you have a different definition of precedent than I do.

keep the two screen/clamshell design

dual improved circle pads (unless they can make sticks not suck with the clamshell design)

a higher res screen. like seriously 480p would be a dream come true at this point and that's mildly depressing.

-Screens as big as iphone 6+
-have more/better non-gaming apps
-instead of dual screens, they can sell the top screen as a seperate cheap attachment which works as a clam shell protection too. Games that detect the top screen attachment, can be played either in a single screen or dual screens mode. (games that only run in dual screens has to have a different colored banner on the side of the physical box). similar to the circle pro pad
-ds/3ds backward compatibility will work only with top screen attachment
-backward compatible with all previous nintendo systems
-specs upgrade
-better account system
-tv output
-retain everything else (camera, mic etc)
-court more supports from the west and indie

A more powerful version of vita will kill the system, if the current vita hasn't give a clue.
