Think we'll ever see Metroid story beyond Fusion?

Nah. I'm sick of the Galactic Federation; they're one of the most boring parts of Metroid, and we just got a (horrible) game that was basically Fusion 2.0. I want to walk through cool bizarre alien planets again, not some grey industrial ship.
Some of the art of the Fusion suit isn't as good as others, but in-game it looks great.
Wouldn't say that. The Fusion Suit has some of the worst sprites in the series.

I mean, after the events of fusion, one could argue that she is the last metroid.
In an interview with Yoshio Sakamoto, he said that Samus lost her Metroid DNA and now has her original DNA after absorbing the SA-X.

I'm not sure how I'd feel about another Metroid game based around Samus's relations with the Galactic Federation. Since she's now their enemy, they'd undoubtedly be important to any games set after Fusion. I'd rather get another game like Super Metroid, where the story is more about the Space Pirates and Chozo, who were absent from Fusion and Other M.

Honestly the franchise is so fragmented that it needs to be rebooted. Pretend Other M never happened and move on from the Prime series. Just reintroduce Samus as a young woman who is given a suit from an ancient alien race and explore her past. Basically an origin story.

Maybe I need to replay it but Fusion felt so out of place .. No sense of exploration being trapped on a ship with a stupid HAL computer

Her origin story is fine as it is - orphaned by Space Pirates, adopted by Chozo and infused with their DNA, becomes Galactic Federation officer, leaves to become Bounty Hunter to get revenge on Space Pirates. It's the parts in between that's problematic, specifically the Galactic Federation part - we've only seen one game where Samus actually acts as a bounty hunter instead of a super soldier for the Galactic Federation.

After how Other M history was recieved, im sure the next Metroid game will very different and not too focused on history

I want a Genndy Tartakovsky take on the post-Fusion world. An animated series, mind you, not a game.

If you want to retcon the whole SA-X "DNA's back to normal" thing, it'd be a ridiculous opening if the Galactic Federation somehow managed to imprison Samus for blowing up the station and begin with a disembodied narration:

"The last Metroid is in captivity.
The galaxy is at peace."

I would love for it to happen, and I think it will eventually. It's just a matter of time - and it might take a little while, since Metroid has never sold amazingly and the fanbase still needs to simmer until they forget the awful, awful memories of a particular 2010 release.

I'd like to see Retro take on the official continuation of Fusion. They've proven themselves to be experts at crafting Metroid games as well as wonderful as making 2D games - I'd like to see them combine those expertise.

In an interview with Yoshio Sakamoto, he said that Samus lost her Metroid DNA and now has her original DNA after absorbing the SA-X.
I don't think anyone would complain if they went ahead and retconned that. It's just a piece of Word of God, after all, and it would be far more interesting (and make more sense) if that wasn't the case.

Her fusion suit only really works well when it's blue all over or orange at the end to match her power suit, the colours inbetween make it a real mess on a sprite so small.

Oooh, that's great. It also can work as an explanation as to why she lost her upgrades from Fusion: she was captured.

Now I want this to happen.

I think Metroid Fusion 2 will come to the 3DS, because every nintendo handheld had a 2d Metroid, so 3ds will also have one.

Then there's the notion that she's made an 'enemy' of the Galactic Federation after the events of Fusion, which could be quite interesting to see play out. Those guys seem to have all the power in that universe, maybe it's time to see them crumble a bit.

I think that actually sounds like a pretty good direction to take it. I'd like to see them just drop the idea of the Metroid creatures, having finally wiped them out, and focus on Samus toppling a corrupt Federation.

But I know we can't trust Nintendo to wipe out the Metroid species, even though they've appeared to multiple times. They're cool creatures. But I wish they'd just let them go.

And I know I'll get a lot of flak for this, but I hope Nintendo doesn't give up on trying to have characters and a story. I enjoyed the dialogue in Fusion and never really bought the idea that it was isolation that made the Metroid games good.

I also wouldn't mind it if they made more Metroid games in the middle that were not related to Metroids, pirates, and Mother Brain. She's a bounty hunter, after all. Maybe we get to see some of her other missions or criminals she has hunted.

You're of the mind that Zelda games would be better without Zelda I take it?

Seriously though, there are a lot of neat things you could do with Metroids without having them return directly. There are already tons of "proof" of experimentation, a facility that is a bunch of creatures merged with Metroids would be intensely good.

I've been dying for Metroid 5 for a long long time =/

I mean obviously yeah Metroid's my favourite franchise, but it's not just that I want a new Metroid game - I specifically want a continuation from Fusion. Samus with her new suit, her Chozo / Metroid / X DNA (yes, retcon what Sakamoto said), knowing the evils of the Federation... Ahh

Fusion certainly isn't an "ending", it sets the series up for so much more, with so much recently acquired.... Adam unfortunately being another acquisition but uh hopeful they don't annoy us with him again.

Aren't all the Metroids chronologically dead by this point?
The next game would need to bring them back in a convincible manner and it needs to hvave them in it.

"Oh look, another previously mapped planet seems to have them"
or
"Some secret research survived"

Done.

After Other M and to a lesser extent Metroid Prime 3, I don't want to see a Metroid story concerning the Federation (or whatever they call it).

Metroid games should have a really simple story, Space Pirates are doing bad shit on a planet so Samus has to go shoot/slice them to save the galaxy.

Another Metroid would be super great, in pretty much any capacity.

With how well Link Between Worlds did (and how great Zero Mission was, for that matter) I kind of hope they do a re-make of Super Metroid or the first Prime for 3DS or Wii U... that would be great.

An original story would be cool too - I've always been super curious about the Chozo and Samus's origin. People seem kind of down on the idea, but I think I'd really enjoy a prequel that explored her relationship with her adoptive race and her early years either in the federation or as a rookie bounty hunter...

My ideal Metroid game would take place in an old, ruined environment. I'm thinking a Chozo metropolis. The areas would range from dark water-filled sewers to roadways clogged by broken-down robotic behicles to cracked glass towers in the clouds. The story would just be that Samus found the city and wanted to investigate, but her ship gets destroyed and she has to find a way off. The backstory would be found in environmental details like statues and optional scanning using the touch screen (which would also be used for aiming homing missiles on a 2D plane).

The backstory I have in mind is that the Chozo who colonized this planet scorned their species' decision to peacefully let other, younger species inherit the galaxy. They stole a few Metroids and other potential weapons and tried to start a glorious new Chozo civilization; unfortunately, their hubris led to their annihilation. At this point, only a few scraggly Chozo stalk in the shadows, driven mad by strange diseases that also warped their bodies. The only rulers in this metropolis now are the vicious Metroids that dwell in the uppermost regions.

Not sure if the space pirates should figure into it at all. If they do appear, their sterile industrial areas should look like a scar on the beautiful Chozo architecture. Think the Combine walls in Half-Life 2.

I would love if the Story behind the Galactic Federation wanting Metroids so bad is that the brain behind the operation is in fact Mother Brain. That would make a ton of sense if the GF is Samus enemy in the next game. The whole Madeleine Bergman/MB could be just a coverup from the GF side

Metroid Fusion will always hold a special place in my heart, as the first Metroid game I ever played. It hooked me on the series for good, and the combination of Fusion and Prime releasing around the same time was just amazing. I've enjoyed there series' lore massively since then, and after the disappointing story of Other M, I really want them to continue where they left off with Fusion.

I've always really liked the design of the Fusion suit. When you consider that the classic Power Suit is modelled (albeit retroactively) on Chozo armour, as seen here;

ChozoWarrior.png

You can appreciate how the Fusion suit is the perfect Mix of Chozo and Metroid styling. What I really love about the new look is the subtle call backs to the Chozo design themselves. Check out the muscle "holes" in arms, and the Spikes on the wrists and you can see what I mean;

chozo.png

When Metroid Zero Mission came along, the enhancements to the physics, world and style quickly dethroned Fusion as my favourite Metroid game. But I also loved the lore shown in the ending images, of Samus growing up on Zebes with Old Bird.

We still don't really know what fate became of the Chozo, after the events of Samus' upbringing, and the betrayal of Mother Brain, but as this ending image of Fusion shows, it seems Samus has some secret contact with Old Bird at least;

hmm.png

So yes, let's continue forward with the Metroid plot line. Samus is effectively the last living Metroid in existence now. What was once her main enemy is now part of her genetics, along with Chozo blood. She's like a walking goldmine for the Galatic Federation at this point, and has been labelled a traitor. There's still so much that can be done with the franchise's story. Enough with the mid-quels like Other M and the Prime series. Let's have Metroid 5.

How are they going to deal with the gaining power-ups side of the game if a) she no longer has the Varia Suit and b) all of the X parasites have been destroyed?

That's easy: Metroids undergo metamorphosis to evolve into more powerful forms. A Metroid larva under the right environmental conditions will change into an Alpha metroid, which can eventually then change into a Beta, which then molts and becomes a Zeta, and then an Omega Metroid. All the while, said Metroid is losing its vulnerability to cold, growing citinous armor, gaining an energy beam attack, and progressing from a larva to something that walks then to something that can fly.

Yeah, I would love to see a post-Fusion Metroid game where Samus is using an upgraded Fusion Suit. There are a lot of potential directions you can take it.

Holy shit, I never noticed that was a Chozo. That's awesome, thanks for posting it.

I really hope we do one day. Especially with the use of the Fusion suit, thought it looked great in both Fusion and Prime.

Don't know what the story would be, but I'd assume the Federation would be on her ass after the stunt she pulled at the endgame.

There's also this.

I might be the dissenting opinion here but I really hope they do away with the cheesy pin-up style art for when you beat the game(s) with a low time. Just feels like tawdry fanservice to me.

I'm okay with it because it's cheesy and harmless.

The only time it really becomes a problem is when it's forced into the actual game... Fuck you Other M.

In fusion Samus becomes a Metroid hybrid, so in Metroid 5 the titular creature can be her.

could even be interesting a story revolving her new metroid heritage, even extremes abilities similar to StarCraft's Kerrigan

Enough with the stupid melodramatic stories. OtherM basically killed the franchise.

I just want a proper Metroid game with good atmosphere, level design and soundtrack. I want subtlety back in the series. If you care about how sexy Samus is, her daddy issues, her rough childhood and how her cute boyfriend abandoned her when she was 16 which traumatized her enough to become a lesbian, just read a fan comic or something.

Or, just keep whatever story there is in the manual. Not all games need to be cinematic. I'm sick of this awful trend.

Obviously you would make the design more bulky as you collected powerups in the next game.

All I can think is how perfect it would be for Metroid V to finally build on a suit that isn't stacked to the gills with visually powerful upgrades only to lose it 20 minutes into the game, and they aren't going to capitalize on it.

I would really like a new 3D metroid, I've never really gotten into the 2D versions. The Chozo really intrigue me, I loved the eeriness of Tallon IV with all the ghosts and ancient architecture. I'd like to see the fall of the Chozo, as long as it was carried out in a less clunky way than in the Prime series. I've just got to the final boss of Prime 3 and I'm not sure how I feel about the game. The close contact with the Federation all the way through definitely took something away from the game, in the same way that the (more limited) interactions with the Luminoth damaged the feel of Prime 2 for me. The engine is also horrible for cut scenes, it all feels so clunky and without the polish you'd expect from a Nintendo title (I think becoming more cinematic is something that needs to be worked on, even Twilight Princess felt a bit weird at times).

The Chozo as a broken race exploiting Samus after the loss of their own warriors would be cool, or a story that borrowed from the Eldar in Warhammer 40k; a proud race laid low because of their arrogance and hedonism. Either way, Samus could be sent out to do different missions, and be given slightly different versions of existing weapons; the grapple beam could be more like a hookshot etc. The game could start off feeling very episodic and strange, with Samus given one piece of equipment for each mission; you get halfway through your sixth and a Portal-style break in the environment occurs and you realise you're in a testing facility. Suddenly the game opens up, removes the railroads and lets you decide your direction; back to the equipment stores, back to your home, up into orbit etc.

It would be cool if as the game went on you got more powerful, but the longer it took you the harder everything would be, so that if you spent all your time looking for missile expansions then some routes would close off; you wouldn't be able to get the grapple shot you thought you'd be fine without because the route would become so dangerous. There should be some really intricate ways of returning though, like long screw attack paths etc, so that everything is still possible with enough skill, and paths have more than one traversal method depending on the items you have, though some will be harder than others. I haven't played Link between Worlds but it sounds like a similar idea; you pick the equipment you think you'll need?

Also, we need new power-ups. We haven't seen a mind-blowing new power-up in the 2D Metroids since the Speed Boost. The Prime trilogy brought a ton of new stuff, but the entire visor system requires the first-person view.

I quite liked the Diffusion Missiles in Fusion, but I won't call them mind-blowing. And they were very underused.

Forgot the Diffusion Missiles. I liked them and hope they can appear again somehow.

Also, the Seeker Missiles could actually become a fun power-up in the 2D games if combined with the touch screen. Drag and fire a homing volley.

This is in Other M, too? In the game, how so? (I haven't played it yet.)

(And Robin, I know, I know--and I don't care for it in there, either, although it's a bit more ridiculous and less grating.)

You are the luckier than the rest of us.

I wish i never played this game. It left a very bad taste in my mouth. I tried washing it off by replaying Super Metroid and Metroid Prime. But these terrible images always get in the way. OtherM pretty much ruined the series for me.
