This deep sea creature is stuff of Cthulu nightmares

As a kid I used to have these animal info card things:

And I remember that the scariest fucking one of them all wasn't the great white shark or whatever, it was the moray eel. I don't remember what it said exactly, but it was terrifying.

Is there a name for having a unsettling fear for the deep blue? I don't have a problem being out on the ocean in a boat or something but seeing certain pictures make me feel really uncomfortable. Heck I actually enjoy swimming a lot but picturing myself stranded in the ocean with just a shit ton of space below me is a scary thought.

Like the picture below makes me feel so damn vulnerable and unnerving.

The best/weirdest thing is, we still dont know what IS down there, and we probably will never know what WAS down there, sure enough evolution found its ways to survive horrific conditions, but imagine the burial ground down there, there have to be some kind of skeletons from some centuries or so ago...though we will never know what it looked like down there maybe 1 million or so years ago...

And even if we were to find some "fossils" we will never know. I mean we just learn something new about how dinosaurs might have looked like, every week. Someone stated that if you look at a skeleton of a hippo or a horse without knowing you wont be able to recreate how it looked like...

Interesting shit to think about, yet the thread is horrific at the same time...glad here on earth, life isnt as disgusting...oh wait, spiders, insect, other weird shit...

You all know of anglerfishes, right? But did you know how they mate?

The tiny male - not really being able to survive on its own - bites into the large female (which, you know, is the one we always see in images). Then the male starts melting, eventually fusing with the female and becomes nothing but additional flesh on her body only providing sperm when needed.

I think moray eels are cute.

It's scary to think..I mean, alotta things down there wouldn't leave skeletons. Most of the jelly type creatures wouldn't. Octopus don't have skeletons, nor do jelly fish. Fish do have bones, but those are probably gone by now.

If there were Kraken or anything of that sort, it'd be long gone.

Are you telling me that sailors would LIE about things like this:

Come on.

Exactly, its a chapter of earths history we will never find out about... prehistoric deep sea life will never be known

The maybe was mostly in regards to the fact that as far as I know all the information we have about the colossal squid comes from corpses. So for all we know they could be extinct. Unless some live specimens have been found and I hadn't heard about it?

Yup, Colossal Squid are very real. Hell, there are already some squid that, with their tentacles, grow to be about 50 feet long or so, possibly longer.(Not talking about BigFin). It's very, very possible Octopus could get just as big.

Massive octopus seem far more terrifying than massive squid to me.

There've been a few found. There has been live footage from a while ago. If there are more, then it's possible they live deeper..... And yeah if there was a gigantic octopus, with their intelligence, it'd be scary. Very possible that it could take down ships.

you should read the link I posted. also - where do you think corpses come from? ;)

I sort of glanced through it at first and when reading about the defrosting and examination of corpses and specifically the largest specimen just assumed it was dead when they found it, actually reading it now I see where I overlooked that it wasn't.

Their intelligence, camouflage, general shape, and Cthulhu appearance all make them far more interesting and menacing. Squid are cool too though.

We have a savior though. The rainbow mantis shrimp shall protect the surface and upper ocean from such foul creatures

Deep sea creatures are incredibly fascinating. We're screwed, but it's fascinating to see them
Mantis Prawns (Pissing Shrimps) are god damn delicious. God, I can't wait until I go back to Hong Kong so I can have some more. Stupid Canadian seafood laws and import fees.

God, how the hell James Cameron can stomach going in the Pacific deep to record footage of Avatar sequels for alien lifeforms...

Like, it'll be damn cool, but the fact these new aquatic aliens he'll use as actors are on our planet is fucking terrifying.

Luckily we don't have a giant octopus swimming about.

Just giant squid. ;_;

E. dofleini is distinguished from other species by its sheer size. Adults usually weigh around 15 kg (33 lb), with an arm span of up to 4.3 m (14 ft).[9] The larger individuals have been measured at 50 kg (110 lb) and have a radial span of 6 m (20 ft)[1] However, highly questionable records of specimens up to 272 kg (600 lb) in weight with a 9-m (30-ft) arm span have been reported.[10] Guinness World Records lists the biggest as 136 kg (300 lb) with an arm span of 9.8 m (32 ft)[1]
