They're just using it as a placeholder for strict, making a connection between the brother who declared that these were the strict type of Asian parents who would ground somebody for 3 months for having beer (he emphasizes that they are "strict because they are Asian" three times in his post), and that Asian parents who happen to be strict usually follow a certain type of Confucian cultural philosophy of filial piety. They're not saying that the actions would otherwise not be justified if it were some other type of parents. If he had just said, "She tattled on me, btw my parents are Asian," without saying they are Asian and strict, or even mentioning the lengthy punishment, I think it would be justified to question the stereotypes that people would bring up.quadriplegicjon said:

I'd argue that it's not self-pity--if you go live in an East Asian Confucian-influenced country for instance, people would explain to you the differences and explain why their systems and values are arguably better. I loved exploring how people in thought about authority and family when I lived in China. The arguable self-pity part comes when that is transported to an American/Western context, and people have to struggle with balancing different cultures and values, often preferring the liberal Western one but being constrained out of connection to the conservative one. And even then, half the kids that say they actually don't enjoy studying medicine or many of the people that live with their parents again when the parents are getting old (instead of following the nursing home route) will say that it is just how things should be, and wouldn't frame it in a negative light.shintoki said:

I don't think there's anything particularly wrong with the girl wanting to be a slut. But if that's the life choice she's made, she has no business getting her brother in trouble over a 12-pack. She's a hypocrite who got her comeuppance.

On the topic of asian parents: I'm Indian (not asian for whatever reason in some people's eyes), and while a lot of my aunts and uncles are really strict with their kids, my parents were always very open, very adult, and very respectful with me. There is a level of expectation to live by (must finish college, must get good grades, etc), but I always told my parents everything, and I always kept communication lines open. I think being extremely strict either turns kids into nutcases, or it makes them resent their parents later in life.
