This Max Payne 3 shootout montage is amazing

My main issue with the game, beyond unskippable cutscenes, was the decision to make collisions cancel your bullet-time. This introduced massive jank that just didn't need to be.

I wish other games (even fps) would adopt the aim from floor mechanics... they solve so many issues like spinning prone bodies, etc.

One of my favourite things about MP3 is how the bullets seem to "hurt" the enemies. You're not just shooting a gun to some random fool like in other games that only show the hitmarker sound or just blood effects.

In MP3 I always had the impression that you were fucking people up with bullets. Like, they experienced pain and they flew back with a nicely aimed shotgun blast for example.

Maybe I am exaggerating, but shooting people in that game felt good as fuck, tbh.

The absolute pinnacle of enemy hit reactions and death animation. Euphoria at its best.

I'm still disappointed whenever I play a new shooter and see canned, repetitive hit reactions transition right into lifeless ragdoll.

From GTA IV to Red Dead to Max Payne 3, I felt like I was seeing the future, but no other developer has even come close. Even GTA V was hugely disappointing in this area.

Agreed. There is a phsicality to both the enemies and the bullets that are missing in just about every other game. Bodies feel like they're solid and have mass instead of the hollow shell of polygons that they are.

As a huge fan of MP2 I absolutely hated the fact they turned this franchise into another cover shooter. The kills just barely restored the bullet time and if you actually stepped out of cover you were gunned down in an instant.
Previous games had barely any chest high covers, you were constantly on the move and while there were moments where you could die fast,I felt that you could spend way more time in slow mo to make up for the difficulty and the whole gameplay had a better pace/ feel for it.
(Or maybe its just nostalgia/mods idk)

Watch the video and tell me how often the player is in cover.

Finished the game on normal and hard and barely used cover at all once I understood the mechanics.

It feels that way until you find out you can shootdodge even with no bullet time, as well as how good the roll is. Then there's no reason to use the cover system anymore.

If not for the unskippable cutscenes (and for a story that isn't even very enjoyable) actually ruining the game, I would put it above Max Payne 2. And below Max Payne.

There were definitely some moments when the animation got in the way of me being successful in that game, but it's still one of my favorite shooters ever. It looks so damn great. They aped Tony Scott to perfection (visually) and the diversity of the locations and weapons made it a joy to play through. Wish I could get a PS4/Xbox One remaster.

Still my ALL TIME favorite 3rd person action/shooter

After that, Vanquish

MP3 is truly a John Woo film come to life if you play it well (^_______^)

So good. The game feels absolutely amazing to play, it's just such a shame R* didn't want you to play for longer than a couple of minutes at a time before being interrupted by unskippable cutscenes. Incredible gameplay but utterly terrible... I don't know, pacing? Gameplay design? The game just never lets you cut loose for long enough.

yep

biggest letdown of last gen for me

I had enormous goosebumps right at the start of the level when the "security" notices him and he jumps aboard the luggage and the music starts.....

I agree with that huge blunder of not using the mechanics/animation/"gunplay" of MP3 in GTA V :[

Fantastic mechanics, the gunplay is amazing, I adore the way it plays on keyboard and mouse (which is really rare for me with TPS). I'd play it a LOT more if not for the unskippable cutscenes.

All y'all people who are like "they should've used its mechanics in GTAV!" - they did. You do realize that, right? There's only so much of it they can fit into a seventh-generation sandbox title. Play GTAIV and it should be clear that the gunplay in GTAV is way more in MP3's direction than in GTAIV.

I saw it more as a slightly better GTA IV rather than a game that was as fun as MP3. The movement neither feels as good and nor does the shooting. GTAV barely feels as good as MP3 at all. I mean it's completely understandable, it was made for the PS3/360 first and shooting isn't the games only main mechanic, I don't really blame them. But they aren't the same in feel or gunporn. It does however make me drool thinking of a Red Dead...game or next gen only GTA game using them...

Yeah I agree, Max Payne 3 is still unmatched when it comes to enemy reaction and death animation. I would love to see Rockstar make a Max Payne 4, if they could address some of the complaints of 3 with unskippable cutscenes and work out a few of the minor complaints.

Educational video on the awesomeness that is Max Payne 3's shooting. I hear some people mostly played it like a cover shooter. Man...did they miss out.

Nope didn't like it at all..a slow mo game in brazil that doesn't make any sense and the cutscenes horrible just horrible. See that skip button? You can't skip it since you need to keep watching! To me Max Payne is 1 and 2..a noir game that wasn't max payne 3 at all.

Trying a replay right now and the cutscenes are pretty annoying, even on PC. There's a few you can skip but for the most part you're sitting around watching a pre-rendered scene whilst the game is apparently loading for sometimes 5+ minutes. There's no reason these should be forced.

I give max Payne 2 the edge for much better atmosphere and Noire style. The story in 3 is just blatant rehash of man on fire and taken. Not a bad thing on its own but mixed with unskippable cutscenes I just rewatch man on fire instead.

Also the YouTube clip outlined how good the player was but doesn't work as an actual film montage, so many times the enemies are just standing there while he's in full view but it's about on par with a Rambo 5 lol not too bad for a video game clip.

I couldn't finish 3 just too repetitive.

I replayed this on PC (only played it on 360 when it came out) and it was amazing with mouse + KB. Maybe the best in the series.

I know it sold poorly compared to their open-world games, but I really hope R* makes a fourth one someday.

are there any mods to give infinite bullet time meter?

Just play the game and you unlock it. Likewise with the Bullet Cam for every kill used in the video.

Cutscenes weren't a issue since the majority of them could be skipped which made going through each chapter to find the clues and golden gun parts for unlocks not as bad as I thought it would be.

Well you didn't actually finish the game so, what the fuck.

The game did get boring and repetitive... I finished it, but the gameplay couldn't save everything else the game has to offer which was nothing compare to its predecessors.

What the fuck what? Oh I see because I didn't make it to the very end I don't get an opinion? Lol
Well if you didn't notice the blatant movie ripoff by chapter ONE you weren't paying attention. BTW Rockstar does this in most games so don't act so surprised

The writing in Max Payne 2 was trash. I get some fans liked some of the similes but at least in Max Payne it wasn't overused to the point of being a parody like MP2.
