This year marks the Onimusha series' 15th anniversary

Love this franchise. I've been meaning to play Dawn of Dreams for years, somehow let that one pass me by. This thread alone makes me want to replay Onimusha 2 again.

I feel like the first three games in this series were some of the best games of all time, and, while I understand that there is a niche of people who really loved them, they are nowhere near as appreciated as Capcom's other two similar series - Resident Evil and Devil May Cry, both of which survived their first generation. Onimusha has a unique setting in feudal Japan, and the gameplay is the perfect fusion of Resident Evil, with its puzzles, controls, realistic setting, and focus on exploring a few key areas throughout the game, and Devil May Cry, with its upgrade system, stronger focus on action, and more supernatural themes. Out of the first three games, I cannot pick a favorite, because they are all very high quality games, and, if anything, improved with each iteration. Onimusha 4 (Dawn of Dreams) is the odd one out, and I feel like it's not as strong as the original trilogy, but it, too, is one of the better games in the PS2's library, has the best soundtrack in the series, and is a very fun game to play in co-op.

It really is a huge shame that this franchise never lived beyond its first generation - it was born and died on the PS2. Worse yet, the pre-rendered backgrounds make an HD remaster unlikely, even with the recent influx of HD-ified games. An Onimusha on PS4 seems like a pipe dream - especially since the series left off on somewhat of an odd note - but the dream is definitely still alive in the hearts of the series' fans.

Oh, and it's most definitely not alive in whatever that mobile card game... thing that was released is. That's hardly Onimusha.

The only console Onimusha game I have played is Blade Warriors. And that's only because it Zero and MegaMan haha.

I await the eventual mobile version of Onimusha.

Capcom has proven time and again it loves putting your nostalgia on mobile.

Onimusha is the first thing i thought of when i saw the gameplay video for Ni-oh. Such a shame this series fell off the face of the planet. Something about the series as a whole encapsulates my love for the ps2 era of gaming. Would love to see a remaster/collection.

Same here. It's 15 years since the first game, but tragically it's 10 years since the last mainline entry. This series needs to continue. HD remaster Day 1. Heck, just release as a PS2 classic and I'm on board.

I never played Dawn of Dreams. Always thought it was a throwaway entry because it was outside of the original trilogy. Must give that a try.

2 onimusha threads happening at the same time. My day is made.

Great series. The four core entries were, even at their worst, incredibly solid games.

That's one HD collection I wouldn't immediately scoff at.

As someone who doesn't even like constant HD remakes, I'll be an instant hypocrite if it includes dawn of dreams. One of the greatest action games I've ever played.

For one reason or another I never played the PC version of 3. Is it any good? Shouldn't be too hard to find a copy now crazy cheap.

It's about what you'd expect from a PC port of its vintage. I bought it on Steam before it was delisted, and someone in the Steam forums made a mod that gives it basic 360 controller and higher resolution support, so it's playable at least.

I'd be all over an HD Collection on PS4. Capcom's all about remasters these days, so it's not too outlandish an idea. Ni-Oh is an easy day one for me; nowhere near enough Samurai games about slicing up demons :P

I've only played 3 but it was fantastic. But what blew my... Hmm 13 year old... Or somewhere near there, Mind was the opening AMV at the start of the game of the demons killing everyone. I had never seen any game remotely gory like that and had never seen an AMV before either. Fucking IMMEDIATELY called my friend over and showed it to him. We proceeded to lose our God damn minds.

Dawn of Dreams isnt bad, just more or less...the next style Resident Evil of Onimusha if that makes any sense.

Its still amazing since you dont usually equate yokai with France. That and the music was amazing.

I'd be all over an HD Collection on PS4.

The obstacle here is actors rights. They'd have to relicense all the likenesses of the people they've used over the years. Despite this being an obstacle to preserving the game, I'm glad they did it. Gives a sense of reality to the characters.

Kinda funny that this series really only took off because there was NOTHING coming out for the PS2 at that time, so everyone just bought Onimusha.

It was an interesting series though. It was kind of in between Resident Evil and Devil May Cry in that it had survival horror elements, but with fast action. But since it was kind of in the middle of both series, it's easy to see why Capcom has neglected it. I think you could easily reboot it into pretty much anything though. A character action game, Souls-esque action RPG, open-world adventure game etc.

And while Dawn of Dreams is kind of ignored, Kaijin no Soki has a BALLIN' sword.

Let it be known that Onimusha 4 is the best one. Anybody that hasn't played it needs to get on that immediately. Best characters, best level design, best combat, even best music(despite not having a big name composer.) It only loses out to the others on the cutscenes.

Onimusha 4 was amazing and the best one gameplay wise. It was like a rpg almost and very addictive mechanics. It also had a ballin soundtrack. Hopefully at some point these games come to PS4 via emulation.

I didn't think about that. It'll probably hold the games back from being released as PS2 Classics, too, I suppose.

Looking back, Onimusha did a bunch of things right, but a bunch of things wrong. The puzzles were ass and some weapons felt incredibly weak compared to others. That being said, the series was fantastic, and I'd love a sequel.

But if Ni Oh is what we get, I'm cool with that too.

Played and loved the first two games in the series. Would absolutely love a HD Remaster of the entire collection. Never got around to 3 or 4. How'd they compare to the first two?

Only one I played was the first game. I loved it, but I couldn't beat it. I just could not get through that optional dungeon to save my life, and people told me I shouldn't take on the final boss without that sword.

Someday.

Still, that's more than I can say for RE and DMC. Never played those.

Whilst speaking of similar games - Anyone ever played Ronin Blade/Soul of the Samurai on PSX from Konami? It was a Resident Evil clone with the choice of either playing as Samurai or Kunoichi (female ninja). You fought against demons, ninjas and samurai and the game was pretty weird/creepy in some ways.

That game was pretty cool. Sometimes I think literally nobody but me ever played this game. As soon as I saw Onimusha on the PS2, I thought it was a sequel to this.

I always try my best to never use regular attacks when I play an Onimusha. It's issen or nothing. I usually have to resort to attacks and magic for bosses, though, so my critical rate ends up around 60-70%.

Never heard of this game. Sounds interesting.

Came in here to post this. Would love to play it again. Loved the added RPG mechanics and the variety of character playstyles.

I actually discovered Onimusha thanks to Tatsunoko vs Capcom of all places! I loved the blonde haired blue armoured swordsman (Koijin no Soki) and that's that. I only recently got some of the games, and I'm missing just the third one for now. I plan to get to them eventually.

Isn't there a problem with the actors' likenesses that has prevented these games from getting HD ports/re-releases?

I loved the first two Onimusha games and still have yet to play through the third and fourth games. Really need to do that one day.

I remember this. Didn't like it much at all-- Capcom's survival horror games played much better.

Onimusha has to be one of my all time favorite games. It's one of the only I've ever completed 100% before achievements were even a thing. For me the move for 3D environments hurt it, but I'm a big advocate for the uncompromising quality of pre-rendered backgrounds.
