Three in October - Backlog Challenge

The challenge is to finish three or more games in a month. Please post your goals for the month, and share your triumphs and setbacks and impressions of the games you play as the month goes by.

It doesn't matter how long or short the games are and it doesn't matter if you're just starting or if you're already near the end. Also, you should use your own judgement with what counts as finishing a game since it can sometimes be fuzzy. There aren't any hard rules.

How Long to Beat is a big help, as a guide to how much longer a game will take.

52 Games. 1 Year. 2016. is a thread for if you're looking for a bigger challenge.

Previous threads:
Three in July - Gamebusters
Three in August - Backlog Divided
Three in September - Monster of Uncharted Games
______________________
I was quick to finish three because of three recent releases I had bought are all under 4 hours, but I will continue to try for more.

I have finished:
King's Quest: Chapter 4: Finished on the 1st. This episode approaches a pure puzzle compilation game, tied together with some good direction. It is disappointing that the game has become a series of mini-games, for both chapter 3 and 4.
Virginia: Finished on the 3rd. The music was great. As far as the gameplay went, I didn't go beyond feeling like I'm just looking around for what I needed to interact with. I might play it again to understand the story better.
Dear Esther: Landmark Edition: Also finished on the 3rd. I played a previous release in 2013 but I forgot most of it. It was relaxing and I could play through it again for the developer commentary.
Wheels of Aurelia: Finished on the 8th. Yet another shorter game released recently (PS4 version). I bought it as it was on some GOTY lists from last year such as Austin Walker's. It's a conversation game in a top down driving game. I don't think it saves mid-game which is disappointing though.
Resident Evil 2: Finished on the 13th. This was Claire's scenario A. Excellent game. I had played it a lot years ago, and got up to the final area as Claire, and got far into the game as Leon but my second-hand copy had scratches on that disc that didn't let me progress past
meeting Ada
. In the last three days, since a friend got interested in it after playing REmake HD, I played it again (PSN version, on Vita) and finished Claire A. I am loading up Leon B now...
King's Quest: Chapter 5: Finished on the 26th. The final chapter, not including the epilogue. It is clear how important this game is to the developers, and it comes across as very personal. It returns somewhat to the gameplay style of the first chapter (not its length).
World of Final Fantasy: Finished the first ending on the 31st. This part was surprisingly short for an RPG at 23 hours, which is strange as a few dungeons seemed to go on far longer than they should have, and battles could be slow. And yet, it made me care to continue and I am considering doing the post-game content, though I would probably use a guide for catching all the mirages.

I'll aim for:
Dragon Quest VII: I am 40 hours in, up to the
sunken citadel
. The stories of this and the previous area are much more intriguing than many of the areas, making me feel better about the story than I had for much of the game before. Hopefully it keeps up.
Dragon Quest Builders: I am up to the start of Chapter 2.

No more heroes paradise:: At rank 7 and will be playing more today, really fun boss fights so far.

Digimon next order:: Chapter 1 finished, love that wargreymon is in who is one of my favourite digimons, have not evolved my blackmetal greymon just yet to it though. Story is ok so far.

Brothers a tale of two sons:: 1/4 through and it's been really good. Very cool gameplay mechanics in controlling 2 brothers to do the puzzles with one controller and each side kind of controlling each bother.

Two games I really want to finish this month are:

Super Mario RPG
Final Fantasy IV (granted this is a replay, but still)

For my third, would like to finish at least one out of this list:
Alan Wake
Gears of War 4
REmake HD
Dishonored
Watch Dogs

Shoot, I'll go for this.

I'm currently at the tail end of Bloodborne. Some shorter games I have that I'm looking forward to finishing are Wheels of Aurelius and Mother Russia Bleeds, and I'm also about halfway through Yakuza 3. There are also a few other games that I've started and not finished yet (like Shadow of the Colossus) that could be intriguing candidates.

My list for the month of October:

- Ys VI: Ark of Naphithhierfhv (PC)
- Mafia 3 (PC)
- Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past (3DS)
- Until Dawn (PS4)
- Grim Fandango Remastered (iOS)
- Rez Infnite (PS4)

My copy of Persona 5 should arrive next week, so that's one. Then I'm planning on playing REmake in the spirit of Halloween.

For the third one, I'll probably play one of the games from my backlog:

- Ys I
- Okage
- FE: Revelation
- Koudelka

Well two main titles for me right now are Doom and Sleeping Dogs.

I finished Watch Dogs a couple days ago, but now have the DLC for it, Bad Blood to go through, so I'll chip that in as half a game.

And if I can get around to it - Assassin's Creed Unity or Sunset Overdrive, when I get my Xbone.

In October, I will complete 100% (Platinum or otherwise)

.- PS4 Tearaway Unfolded
.- 3DS Project X Zone 2
.- PS4 Flow
(Probably...)

Still playing Deus Ex Mankind Divided on PS4 and enjoying the game. I'm a little more than halfway through according to gaf estimates. I wish there were a way to find out how many hours I've put into the game.

Hoping to finish up Wolfenstein: The Old Blood and the Dishonored DLC this month as well.

It's October, so I think I'll make things festive and go for Resident Evil 1-3. Been itching to play something atmospheric, and RE seems perfect. It's also an opportunity to see how the series has aged as well as how each game evolved over the previous.

Completed MGS2 and 3 last month.

This month:

MGS4 (I'm about two hours in)
Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD
3rd game to be decided

This month, I'm going for...

1. The Last Window: The Secret of Cape West - I'm on Chapter 8 (out of ten), so I'm nearing the conclusion. I planned on beating it before Dragon Quest VII but... Then I bought Picross e and got distracted. I want to finish up before I forget what's going on though.

2. Until Dawn - I started this with my boyfriend some months back, but he ended up not liking it so the game fell by the wayside. Might as well finish it up for October!

3. Atelier Escha & Logy - I'm trying to catch up on Atelier games. After this one, just two more to go! Heh...

Going for:

Resident Evil 5 remaster (likely)
Resident Evil 6 remaster (possible)
Rresident Evil remake (unlikely)

Let's see.

Trails of Cold Steel II (PS3)
Tomb Raider Definitive Edition (PS4)
Naruto: Ninja Storm 4 (PS4)

Naturo is mostly done I just have to do a little but of adventure mode there. Cold Steel 2, I haven't even started yet since I first need to finish my second run of the first game... I'm really hoping that I can do CS2 this month.

Tomb Raider Definitive Edition should be doable but not as quick as I want to. I have Rise of Tomb Raider pre-ordered as well but I doubt I can finish TR:DE in time to play that one at launch or anytime soon. (much like what happened to me with Cold Steel 1 and Cold Steel 2 last month)

I'm in:

- Wolfenstein: The Old Blood.
- Grim Fandango Remastered.
- Resident Evil 4 Resmastered
- Doom 2016 (50% done).

3 is very unlikely since I have an exam coming but who knows.

[WiiU]Xenoblade X - in progress
[Wii]Ju-On: The Grudge - in progress
[3DS]7th Dragon III Code: VFD - in progress

Xenoblade is almost done. Just have to grind tickets and craft gear.

Going for:
-Resident Evil 4 (rttp, just reached the
castle
)
-Ni No Kuni (lttp, didn't start yet)
-Deus Ex Mankind Divided (just past the first mission)

I've already completed Firewatch, so that's one of three done.

I also hope to complete the following this month, although I'm reaching for the stars a bit here.

Zenith
Mafia III
Gears of War 4
Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20th Anniversary
Star Fox Guard
The Division
Forza Horizon 3

Mirror's Edge: Catalyst (XBO) - Done
Destiny (XBO) - In progress
Forza Horizon 3 (XBO) - In progress

Only beat 2 titles last month due to Overwatch and family stuff. Target for this month:

Life is Strange
SOMA
Until Dawn

I bought all 3 in a sale a few months back but didnt touch any of them. Might as well get them all out of the way since theyre all single player experiences which shouldnt take too long to finish.

Been horrible the last four months completing only one game outside of replaying and finishing The Witcher III: Wild Hunt for the second time. Too many games already and my backlog just keeps increasing. LOL.

OVERALL 2016: 10/27 (37%)
SEPTEMBER 2016: 1/3 (33%)

1 - Deus Ex: Mankind Divided / PS4
Finished the game in early September. Good game but didn't like the horrible abrupt ending, having to choose between objectives for a few missions which forces you to not being able to play one or the other and having the side missions be set at certain times and thus missing them completely wasn't good. Overall, an 8.5/10.

OCTOBER

1 - Gears of War 4 / Xbox One
Very much looking forward to the game. Never played the original trilogy or Judgment and this game easily looks like a game of the year contender.

2 - Ryse: Son of Rome / Xbox One
Rejoined GameFly and rented Ryse. Just waiting to get the game. Hope to play through it before Gears of War 4 releases.

3 - Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition / Xbox One
Purchased the disc version a few weeks ago and haven't played it yet. Will most likely play later this month.

T_T I feel like work + school has made it really hard for me to play games anymore.

OCTOBER GOALS

God eater 2 Rage Burst (Chapter 5?)
Assault Suit Leynos (2 levels done)
Metal Gear Solid V: TPP (I just remember running away from skulls)

Hopefully I hit these out of the ball park x_x.

Nearly finished Bioshock 2 and will move onto Minerva's Den afterwards...

Than Bioshock Infinite + Burial at Sea Episode 1 & 2 will be next.

May try to squeeze Titanfall 2 in there if I can but we'll see lol

Will finally beat Trails in the Sky this month. I'm literally at the last dungeon of the game, it's taken me a full year to get to this point.

Then I might beat Axiom Verge which I'm 4 hours in.

After that it's probably Stardew Valley since the new update is coming out.

Gears of 4 | PC
Mafia 3 | PC
Battlefield 1 | PC, though I'm not sure I'll get through the campaign and may play through Shadow Warrior 2 instead.

I'm currently playing thru Trails of Cold Steel and I'm planning on playing the second one after. These games are way too huge for me to finish both and another game in one month.

Gears 4
REmake
The Evil Within
Until Dawn
Grabbed by the Ghoulies

Only ones I am for sure going to beat are Gears 4 and Until Dawn. Hopefully I can finish REmake, TEW and Ghoulies as well though!

My 3 are:

Far Cry Primal (I'll beat and get the platinum tonight)
Akiba's Trip
Guilty Gear Revelator (story mode)

Should also beat Code: Realize and Transformers Devastation from PS+ too.

Why do I bother coming in these threads over and over and posting. I never make any progress lmao

Anyways, here are my pics I'm gonna try and make it through:

- ABZU
- Grow Home
- Grow Up

Dragon Quest VII (3DS)
Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 (PS4)
Ratchet & Clank (PS4)

That's the motive. Hoping I can get these done by the time World of Final Fantasy launches. Don't want to start another RPG with DQVII on my plate.

Gears 4
REmake
The Evil Within
Until Dawn
Grabbed by the Ghoulies

Only ones I am for sure going to beat are Gears 4 and Until Dawn. Hopefully I can finish REmake, TEW and Ghoulies as well though!

That's a pretty neat game. Enjoy. (Plus, if you haven't played Until Dawn, you're in for a treat. It was my GOTY)

Goals

PS4
Resident Evil remaster
Transformers Devestation
MGSV
Trackmania Turbo - Though I probably won't finish it due to difficulty.

Currently Playing
Destiny
Need for Speed:Rivals
Rocket League

PS3

Prince of Persia : Trillogy

Possibly Beyond Good and Evil (but as an inverted player I'm struggling with the control options.)

Nintendo
Metroid Prime Trilogy ( is in my pile of Shame)
Zelda: Minish Cap
DKC2

Why do I bother coming in these threads over and over and posting. I never make any progress lmao

Anyways, here are my pics I'm gonna try and make it through:

- ABZU
- Grow Home
- Grow Up

Its nice to see people on NeoGAF actually trying to play games and progress instead of complaining about backlogs all the time.

I don't think I'll make much progress this month because of Dragon Quest VII. I take ages with rpgs and it's supposed to be a long game.

Dragon Quest VII
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirits of Justice
Rhythm Thief and the Emperor's Treasure

I got lofty goals this month
Xcom 2 I'm still in Africa and it took at least 4 months to beat part 1 so good luck
Mafia 3: would be reasonable except I'm playing a ton of Xcom 2
Gear of war 4 this I'll definitely do looking forward to coop with the wife
Aragami: hopefully I can beat this as well
YSly 4 : been playing this for at least half a year

I'm going to try to beat:

Resident Evil Remake (PS4)
Ace Attorney Spirit of Justice (3DS)
Shadow Complex Remastered (PS4)
Halo Reach (360)

I just started my Resident evil playthrough and I hope to be able to finish it and I've been playing Spirit of Justice here and there since release and I do think I should be able to finish before the end of October. Halo Reach and Shadow complex should be easy enough to beat in a relatively short amount of time (hopefully)

Good Luck to everyone else with their games!!

I gave up on the 52 games/year challenge, I don't want to force myself to play. I'm at 42 games now I think and will probably get to 46-48 by the end of the year. That's enough.

This month I'll beat:
- Fire Emblem Fates Conquest: Now at chapter 16
- Batman Arkham Knight
- Enslaved, maybe

Going to go for these this month:

Doom (2016) - Bought it maybe two months ago and never started it. Played through the second level yesterday. Going to run through it, enjoying it and the secret hunting so far.

Ratchet and Clank (2016) - Same with Doom, though have only installed it and not played. Looking forward to it and its bright fun graphics.

Xenoblade Chronicles X - For w/e reason I stopped playing it despite trucking along to the end about two months ago. Really close, got my game all modded/cheated up so no more grinding or frustrations with the combat, just gotta pile along to see the ending.

Smash Brothers 4 - Think I played a solid 20 minutes of this game after buying it. Want to play through a few characters in arcade mode or something at least haha.

Digimon Cyber Sluth - Bought a PSVita and this a few months ago and never got too deep into it, about 5 hours in, enjoy it but time to seriously start blasting away at my Vita Backlog. It's grown, has amazing games... and I played basically none of them.

Journey (PS4) - time to finally play this, had it on PS3 but never got around to it. After going back to Flower (which I love) a few nights ago, I figure I should finally get this off the list too.

------

Usually go out a lot and make excuses for not playing games anymore but going to chill out this month a bit and actually sit down and play stuff instead of wasting hours on the internet when at home.

The backlog continues to grow but I did beat 4 games last month, pretty happy with that. Lately I've been playing Xbox One and PS4 a lot so I want to get back into the Nintendo backlog. Plan is, hopefully, to finish three of the following:.

Yokai Watch 2
Paper Mario Color Splash
Star Fox Zero
Yoshi's Woolly World

I've already started and made progress in these games though so I may also ignore that and do these:

Doom (PS4)
Forza Horizon 3 (Xbox One)
Oceanhorn (Xbox One)

Currently I am only tracking my PS4 backlog but I have 28 physical games I haven't even played. I am terrible.

My goals

Dragon Quest VII: I think I'm near the end of the game. I'm hoping to finish it before Friday.

Paper Mario Color Splash: First impressions have been fairly positive from what I've seen so if it reviews well I'll pick it up.

GTA3: I never beat this one before. I'm currently on the second island so I think I should be able to do it.

This month I will finish Witcher 3 Blood and Wine and Etrian Odyssey Untold 2. Still undecided if I should platinum Rorona plus or go straight to Totori; already starting to feel the burn of Rorona. That was why I went to EOU2. Also will tackle Odin Sphere on PS4.

After I finish EOU2 I will also do a playthrough of both Metroid Zero Mission and Fusion. On PC, probably it will be Divinity Original Sin but doubtful I will finish that game on October.

As a list:

Witcher 3 Blood and Wine
Atelier Rorona Plus Platinum
Atelier Totori Plus
Etrian Odyssey Untold 2
Metroid Zero Mission
Metroid Fusion
Divinity Original Sin Enhanced Edition
Odin Sphere Leifthrasir

One down.
I am little disappointed by Halo. It was my second time with this game (previously I finished 2 or 3 missions 10 years ago), but from mission 5, I had a feeling that architecture of spaces/rooms was very similar and this backtracking, which get on my nerves. However I love the music and fantastic views. Solid game. Nothing more, nothing less.

X360
Forza Horizon

XBO
Halo
Halo 2

3DS
Citizens of Earth

September was a terrible month gaming-time wise. Hope to do much better during October, need to play short games.

At least three of the following:

  • Ni no Kuni (PS3)
  • Metal Gear Solid 2 (X360)
  • Resident Evil Revelations (PC)
  • Splinter Cell: Blacklist (PC)
  • Shovel Knight (PC)
  • Star Wars: Republic Commando (PC)

Well.. I am having a go at this as well. Managed to finish Vanishing of Ethan Carter in the first few days so that gives hope. Although the game itself was fucking bleak..

Ill also try to squeeze in a game of Civ5 standard map continents as Ottomans if that counts and finish FC3 Blood Dragon.

I am already working my way through these 2 games:
Witcher 2
Tales of Zesteria

Need to find third game to complete the challenge
