Three years later, why is Crysis still the best looking PC game?

Smash88 said:
I love when people say that the main reason is piracy. Always make me chuckle. The same could be said for the Xbox360 where in some cases it is pirated more than the PC counterpart.

I suggest you guys read up on this, rather than spewing PR bullshit that companies put in their quarterly reports to calm their investors, and to give a reason of why their shitty game is selling so terribly.

Fuck this bullshit. Piracy is piracy and it has great impact on sales. The latest example is Bad Company 2. The game is made for multiplayer from the ground up and multiplayer isn't cracked to date. According to its online stats page there are more PC users than xbox and PS3 users. So it sold well on PC. Meanwhile Mirrors Edge flopped really, really hard (I asked one of the DICE employees on twitter about this), Dead Space followed the suit. Was Mirrors Edge a bad port? Hell, no. Dead Space? Yeah, there were problems but still it was very enjoyable. People
are morons
won't support the industry because most of them play casually and just don't care. If you can take it for free, then why pay for this? This is the main reason I hear from like 90% of people I know. When they can't download the game, they usually (gasp) buy it. As it happened with two of my acquaintances. They have waited thinking that BC2 would be cracked like COD4,5,6, when that didn't happen, they fucking bought the game. The same thing happened after 2 weeks of waiting for proper AC2 crack.

Are you blind? Sure, the motion blur is a bit excessive, but this easily bests 99% of all other games in terms of visual fidelity. It is not opinion but fact. Whether you like the art style is your own opinion.

Lol wtf. I know Crysis is the best looking game of all time. I was saying that that mod aka the animations and effects they added.

Please don't call for other people to be banned.

I'm not calling for it, I was genuinely curious, usually that's a insta. Didn't know if the rules had changed or not.

But I guess they haven't.

Inasmuch as there are any real stats on how piracy directly impacts software sales, they fall much more on the side of "not really all that much." Piracy has absolutely nothing to do with the relative lack of boundary-pushing tech showcases on the PC and Smash88 was totally correct to suggest that it's a dumb reason to offer up in this thread.

this is a good article on that I think.

It's an interesting hypothesis that, even if a 100% secure from of DRM was perfected for the PC, and pirates had to be selective about what they spent their money on, they would likely end up buying exactly what everyone else is playing (e.g. Modern Warfare 2) and thus wouldn't really impact sales in any meaningful way.

Crysis, out of the box, looks average. Sure, it may be technically great, but when you play it on screen, it's average. I played it on high settings and it looks pretty 'meh' to me. Jaggies galore too.

The custom configs and mods however, make it look awesome. But vanilla Crysis' graphics are overrated, except the snow and alien levels, which look jaw dropping.

Crysis Warhead looks better though :P

But obviously, the game seems to be capable of mindblowing graphics. holy shit at that video jett posted.

that particle mod that someone posted looks amazing...

i finished my playthrough and found that the aircraft carrier part and onward really slowed my system to a crawl playing on very high and 1080p...is this expected or just my system?

How does one go about taking a picture in Crysis? Prt Scr doesn't work.

Also, I wonder if there is anything I can do to make the game run smoother. I'm running everything on Very High, with the particle mod, some realism mod that changes the lighting or something like that, and 1080p (AA off) and I get around 30fps MAX, but most of the time it sits around between 18-24fps. Yeah that's asking a lot off the system :lol but I did try lowering the resolution and some setting but it doesn't get THAT much better.

My system is:
Intel Core i7 2.66ghz quad core
6gb DDR3
GTX260

Am I asking too much out of it?

GPU is way to slow for what you want to do.

Use this config: http://www.crymod.com/thread.php?threadid=60913

Use this mod: http://www.crymod.com/filebase.php?fileid=4429&lim=0&letter=R

Use the particle mod as well if you want, but remove everything else.

Then use FRAPS to take beautiful screens and post them in the high res screenshot thread for everyone to gawp at.

GPU is way to slow for what you want to do.

High GPU is more than good enough if paired with the right configs and mods.

Yeah, you are asking a bit much of that videocard. Go get Fraps for screenshots and take them in anything other than jpeg and then convert to jpeg. Maximum quality.

tilde (console)

r_getscreenshot

there's some more stuff in here. You could probably bind it to a key, too.

EDIT: Or fraps :p

Ok I don't know if I installed the config correctly, but I did what the guy posted there. Changed them from .txt to .cfg and put both under the crysis folder. Don't know if I see a big improvement or not which is making me believe I didn't do it correctly...

Have you put the autoexec file in the following folder?:

Crysis>Game>Config

In that folder there should already be an autoexec file. Backup and overwrite it with the one you just downloaded. If you don't get a "do you want to replace this file... blah blah blah" message then your doing it wrong.

Ok, it didn't do a "do you want to replace" bla bla but it is working now. Frames went up to 30-40fps!

Edit: actually it is really unstable, goes up and down drastically.

again, you need to make sure you're replacing the old config file and that you're in the proper folder as mentioned above.

Ok, do this then. Backup the original autoexec file. Then open the new config file you downloaded and select all>copy and then just open the original config file in your config folder and paste it into there replacing all the old stuff.

There should only be one autoexec file in that config folder, just make sure it contains the new modified code, not the original.

deathsight580 said:
That's pretty weird beacause in the config folder there is no autoexec so I can't do what you are saying.

There should be. If not then just simply paste the new one in and it should all work fine.

Well I changed the game from DX10 to DX9 and that improved the performance by a ton. Now it's fine and I don't see a difference so whatever! I'll post some pictures now in the PC thread.

Thinking about the original topic a bit more, I would honestly say that Resident Evil 5 is right up there as one of the best looking games on the PC. The PC version runs at a perfect 60 fps on a decent rig at 1080p with loads of AA and AF. The quality of the art direction, the great performance, and the technical muscle behind the engine really delivers something outstanding. It's definitely one of my go-to games when I want to impress. The realtime cutscenes are just insane on the PC.

There are two games that people always forget about:

1)Far Cry 2
2)Riddick

Two great looking games.

Especially Riddick. The water in that game is awesome.

This will probably be the first game I buy for my new rig i'm building this Christmas. Will most likely be my "show-off" game. I haven't played it yet, so I expect I am in for a real treat.

Use custom configs (@crymod etc..) Vanilla crysis isn't that impressive.
