People are acting like these people are the worst parents in the world when in actual fact they're trying to help their son fund a round the world trip with $20,000 they're getting from the sale of their house. None of which they have to do!

You call it helping, I call it bribery.

I don't get the people calling this affluenza.

Who in the article are displaying the symptoms? The parents who want to sell the cat for 140,000, and are offering their son a choice? The son who wants to travel overseas and needs money but loves his cat? The family who offered 140,000 on top of the house price for the cat?

To be honest, the only people I feel slightly annoyed at are the buyers. And thats only because they have more money than sense.

Sounds like the parents cat since at 15 you don't have your own money it all belongs to the parents. As do any possessions.

If you mow lawns or babysit at 15, you're lucky if your parents deign to leave whatever money you've worked for alone?
Is their some actual law on the books saying teenagers can't have money or their own possessions?

The kid should sell his parents cars and give them 1/7 of the money he got for them.

Okay, I laughed.

Sam should tell them to eat a bag of syphilitic dicks, imo

Amazing thread. The mix of smug self satisfaction tinged with bitter envy and resentment is quite the combination.

“We’re thinking we’ll put $20,000 in a pile next to the cat and say to Sam: you choose.” She said Sam was planning to travel overseas next year and the extra money from the sale could help pay for his trip. “And he can’t take a cat with him,” Ms Perceval said.

What a bunch of fucking assholes. Pets aren't a fucking commodity.

Sam, I hope you are a NeoGAF poster, cause if you read this, I wont hold it against you if you decide to slap your parents. That is just such a dick move on a epic scale.

Pretty hilarious how glaringly obvious the divide is here between people who understand and have had pets and those who don't and have not.

I love my pets deeply, and I would probably sell them if I were offered $140K. Someone paying that much means I know they'll take care of them.
It would allow me to find a place for myself, I could afford a car+driver's license and a lot of other stuff.
If I was already getting 2 million beforehand though? No fucking way.

My girlfriend and I have a ragdoll but we wouldnt sell her even for the $140K. Although my apartment isnt worth as much as the house but its in a better part of Melbourne.

Your parents absolutely could put you to work mowing lawns or babysitting and take possession of any money earned. Legally.

Pets are treated as property. How is it shocking that many see them the way we treat them?

I like how no one took notice that I would sell my cat of 15 years. It is almost like no one wants to give me money.

The fuck?

I think its more the fact that the parents took the decision to sell their sons cat, not the son.

Also bribing him 20K out of a total of 140K to sell -his- cat.

Also its fucking 140K for a fucking cat, that kind of spending is what makes me hate rich people. They could get one for 100(?) dollars to shut the kid up if he/she wants a cat so bad.

I get the attachment to a pet. But no pet took care of me and did everything for me and made me. It's black and white between a pet and the welfare of my parents.
Yeah, it sounds like these people are really struggling. Won't someone think of the upper class?!

I don't care if my parents are struggling or not, I fucking love them and owe them a tremendous debt. So yeah, I'd be happy to boost their welfare by giving up a cat.

You're seriously saying prioritize class warfare bullshit over your own parents? Man, socialists sound a lot like spoiled ungrateful children.

There's only one spoiled ungrateful child in this story and it's remarkable that you haven't found them yet.

Ok.

My parents made sacrifices for me continually and unhesitatingly for decades. I don't care what fucking class they are; I'd be happy to return the favor.
