Tim Schafer Talks Psychonauts 2's Past and Future

Notch is going to be the quickest rags to riches to rags story.

He has a bad one. He's seen as being greedy and arrogant.

Could you give more details?

I haven't followed the progression of his reputation. I bought Minecraft over a year ago and then everyone was really supportive of his efforts and business decisions. I haven't kept up with the reputation side of things for him once he actually got an office and employees so it seems a little baffling that there's been such a turnaround on the public perception of the guy.

From what I've read of news reports for things like his Scrolls games, I was still under the impression he was much loved by the fanbase. Not to mention wasn't there a convention in his honour not too long ago?

I wonder if they can skip seriously any publisher at all, they won't get $13M back just by selfpublishing on Steam and without additional money spent on advertising. Maybe with EA Partners or some similar program (the way Orange Box or Left 4 Dead were distributed).

with nominations for 'most hated game of the year', 'most capitalistic publisher', 'worst graphics', 'most hated fanbase this year', 'worst video game related event', 'blunder of the year', and 'scrub of the year'

it's 4chan, so you can easily deny the merit behind it, but they're also one of the key first audiences for any type of viral video gaming.

... That's the actual, serious point you had? Come on, now.

4chan hates everybody, even you.

Wow. Tim and Doublefine have been having an interesting couple of weeks, huh? I would love to see a Psychonauts 2. Let's hope they can figure out how to make things happen.

that clearly proves that there is a negative attitude towards notch/mojang, lol. it might not be a site you like, but does it show anything different?

it's dead impossible to find information proving someone has a good reputation or not. i really doubt there's been many surveys over this.

I'm not sure 4chan would be impressed by Notch funding a second Psychonauts.

4chan likely hates the first Psychonauts. And probably Tim Schafer too.

That is so inaccurate that it's scary. That guy gets more praise over there than any other gaming message board that I've seen.

You put too much stock in their opinion.

But if one cannot prove someone's rep (as you stated above), then why were you spouting off about how bad is his and how he needs to turn it around?

It's just something that needs to be said. There's a benefit to this, and it remedies his decaying reputation. I shouldn't mention something because it's unprovable? It's not just on 4chan, man. It's everywhere, even here on GAF. Try reading some of the old threads talking about Notch/Mojang.

I love how whenever 4chan is brought up, the people who never visit it are the first to say what it is like.

I'm reading Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman at the moment, and this seems like a great example of '"answering an easier question". It's really hard to represent the opinions of many thousands of people, and come to kind of some kind of overall consensus.

So the question, "does Notch have a good reputation" is replaced with "what have I heard recently about him in the few places I visit on the internet?". Voila! Notch's reputation is established.

I spent about a minute searching 4chan and Tim Schafer and found some replies saying that Psychonauts is crap and that the poster hates Schafer.

I'm pretty sure that, generally speaking, Tim Schafer is well received on just about any message board dedicated to gaming. 4chan also has enough of a tendency that no matter what is being discussed, there's going to be someone claiming its shit.

Hell, 4chan had a thread recently about how Gaf is a Sony shill site and all the moderators are really one person or some nonsense. So their opinions on matters, while entertaining and often interesting, aren't particularly swaying or informative.

I think, in terms of the larger population, that he might not have a bad reputation. Most people do not know who Notch is, nor do they even care. The minor, vocal, hardcore gaming crowd is very important with games that don't get packaged up immediately and sent to Wal-Mart. That's the crowd that I was talking about, sorry for the ambiguity.

I've heard that Notch is a dick, but I don't give a crap if he throws money at Double Fine to make Psychonauts 2 happen.

Screw Minecraft; if Psychonauts 2 comes to fruition, that will be Notch's biggest contribution to gaming.

I kept hearing rumors but didn't want to let myself believe and suffer massive disappointment later. This is the most encouraging information I've come across and if it really happens....I don't even... BELIEVE.

How can something be too creative? Or do they mean too ambitious and has a high potential to fall apart?
There could be many polite ways to explain that part, but the most blunt is also probably the one closer to the truth: mediocrity is usually reassuring for many people, while pure genius can be... unsettling.

I couldn't care less about Notch but I'll get a tattoo of his face over my heart if he makes this happen. Also, a Mr. Pokeylope tattoo on my forehead.

wait, is stephen totillo really pissed the text from the article was pasted in the post? lol
jesus christ

I could understand why he's upset if it wasn't for the fact Kotaku copies threads from GAF word for word and posts them on their own site as stories.

He isn't any more awesome than he was in the past, so why the sudden influx news related to him?

He just put a game out, the kickstarter project went way beyond expectations, and Notch is offering to fund a sequel to a beloved game.

Its a perfect storm for Tim Schafer news to descend upon us from

Hey GAF I have an awesome idea how about instead of celebrating this really awesome thing we get into a big pissing match instead?

Loved the first one so much that I bought it twice, played it 4 times, and bought a signed poster from his website.

When I placed the order, I (very) kindly requested a personalized poster and it's exactly what I got. I literally puzzle over it ever time I see it..."3rdman is a controversial pie variety".

Totilo deserves better than that shithole Kotaku. :/

That's with express consent of Tyler, I think. Never did follow that particular story.

Tim Schafer is easily becoming one of my favorite developers and I've never played one of his games.
what the fuck is wrong with you

edit: maybe you're just young, not your fault. Get one of those Lucasarts collections and start playing! Brushing up on gaming history is never wrong.
