UN and US have already pointed out how stupid airdrops are in this case because they're fucking expensive which translates to less aid, plus without people on the ground to clear the area, etc someone could die from having a gigantic crate lan on top of their house.

Ok. Why US? How come not another fucking country? Why not Europe, China, Russia? I hate this now. Every time there is a fucking disaster in the world we, the US, have to be there. FUCK YOU PPL!!!

Time article said:
The Bush Administration has so far rejected the idea — "I can't imagine us going in without the permission of the Myanmar government," Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Thursday...

:lol :lol

Yeah that would never happen.

I don't see any problem with ignoring the host government in this case. Of course I understand the other concerns as far as strain on us, but the concerns of the Myanmar junta over their airspace are relatively negligible. It's not troops on the ground, it's grudgingly invading their airspace to help people they aren't. As the article has pointed out it wouldn't be precedent-setting either. Now if it were expanded to forced entry of troops and peace keepers, then I could understand the Burmese government's concerns.

Do you know whats gonna happen to anyone caught taking supplies from US air drops? Anyway this administration doesn't give a shit.

We can't do it, we don't have the man power unless we're willing to pull out of one of the hundred plus countries we're in around the world. Might I suggest South Korea since Iraq will never happen?

Well, the situation there is terrible and definitely falls under the guidelines for humanitarian intervention/R2P so I wouldn't really be opposed to military action of some sort in order to help...

I agree with this though.

"The Bush Administration has so far rejected the idea — "I can't imagine us going in without the permission of the Myanmar government," Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Thursday..."

Hmmm...Since when has the Bush Administration ever asked for permission?

IT'S MYANMAR. WTF people.

Every thread someone posts something like this. And in every thread there is a response about how the junta renamed the country in the 80s - and it is not an internationally recognized name. Myanmar is the name the repressive military regime gave the country - it is not the real name.

It's Myanmar, but the Time article refers to it as the Burmese government.

Actually, I just noticed the author of the Time article calls it Burma throughout. I guess he's some sort of activist or hasn't gotten the memo.

Whether you accept the government or not, that's what they've named the country. It's like Iran is called Iran even though it's Persia.

the only people who don't call it Burma are the ones who seem to want to make a point about how culturally insensitive we all are. its name on the map is Burma. we are taught in Geography that the country is called Burma. why would you be so intentionally stupid as to try and label the author as an "activist"?

I hate politics, we won't give them aid because they won't let us into their country. Why don't we just drop the aid off at a port and go about our own business instead of trying to inject ourselves into every country.

Or just not help them at all and take care of our own.

the US shouldn't act irrespective of the international community, but in situations like this there exists a universal responsibility to protect the citizens of a recalcitrant government/regime. i'd support massive food and aid drops, though real help can't be provided without a flood of medical teams to prevent a quick spread of waterborne diseases.

Uhm, there's like a whole bunch of other countries helping out there.

The English name the Burmese people gave their country - Union of Burma - after they gained independence from Britain > the name a repressive military regime gave the country.

Most international bodies don't accept the name change. Which is why the author called it "Burma" throughout.

The name change to Iran isn't really comparable.

the Burmese peopl actually want it though, the protests were a cry for the international community to remove the government, whether through economic activity or war. And by blocking the aid, they could be condemning hundreds of thousands of people to die, which is a serious crime and possibly warrants action

.
Yeah let's just airdrop food. Everyone will just rush up to it in an orderly fashion and munch down while the Junta shakes their fist at the sky

So... Germany, or Deutschland?
Espana or Spain?
Estados Unidos or United States?
Alemania or Germany?

Federal Republic of Germany is the official English name of the country. I'm not getting your point here.

But most Iranians I know identify themselves as Persians. If your argument is what the people want to be called should be the official name then it is comparable to Iran.

Intentionally stupid? Fuck you. Turn on the news you idiot. Myanmar is used just as often as Burma, if not more so. Go to the cnn.com homepage and the link to that exact same Time article has the title changed to "Time to invade Myanmar".

My neighbor is "Persian" and the reason why she calls herself that is becuase she despises the culture in Iran right now. I'm not sure Persians should be your defense.

the US don't have to do anything.

Tell China to invade Burma to help them. Or UK. Or France. Or Germany. Or Japan.

They're all rich enough

"Persian" is the dominant ethnic group in the country of Iran. Iranian kurds, for example, are not Persian. It is nothing like this Burma/Myanmar name debate.

My defense is the common sense that the people in charge of a country get to name the country. When we look back at history it will say "...while under this regime the country came to be known as Myanmar. In 20xx when the military junta was replaced the people of Myanmar changed the name of the country back to Burma (or chose another name or whatever)."

Until fairly recently in history the area called Iran was called Persia. So in one usage "Persian" can refer to an ethnic group but in another it can be seen as a synonym for Iranian: an indication of nationality. I always understood the Persian people I knew to be using it as their nationality not necessarily their ethnicity. Especially sense it was usually in response to a direct question like "where are you from"?

Meh, who cares what the Burmese government wants to call itself?

That last Rambo movie created the impression that Burma is like a small village with a handful of people and a bunch of thugs/soldiers running the show. But 55 million is like WoW.

While I get your point, from a purely humanitarian point-of-view ... Burma is obviously a WAY more immediate problem.

I was at work and hadn't really paid any attention to the news of a cyclone in Burma. I see this story on CNN that says something about 100,000 possible dead in Burma. The first thing I thought was "Did Rambo do it?" I'm so going to hell.

And I agree with this 110 percent. It's rather sad how fast we can react to these third world countries when natural disasters hit them, but it takes us forever to get to New Orleans.

Remember? Independence of state and nation?

Yeah it's a poor choice of words. "Intentionally ignorant" seems more accurate.
I always wondered about Zenith, but I thought you at least had a little sense. Care to elaborate on why whatever you think is soooo superior and makes me "intentionally ignorant". I hope it's not what I replied to regarding Zenith as what he was saying actually is true ignorance as made evident by watching or reading any sort of coverage on Myanmar/Burma.
