It's always the same with these threads. People coming into them and want validation for their opinions when instead they should be looking at these lists as a way to find games they might have missed.

It's fucking pathetic really.

This post, following this:

that list makes no sense and only highlights how weird games are these days

Is pretty funny.

Can you give me a link to the PS4 version of Rise of the Tomb Raider? It seems like I missed it.

....hehehe...

I'm kind of sad games like Etrian Odyssey Untold 2, Ori and the Blind Forest, Final Fantasy Type 0 HD, Resident Evil Revelations 2, Dungeon Travelers 2, Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon, and Bloodborne won't get a whole lot of recognition in any of these GOTY lists that happen. Well, maybe Bloodborne. Which is weird that it wasn't mentioned here, but whatevs. What even is Prune? Also sucks that Xenoblade Chronicles X will never get its chance to shine.

I guess that's a fair point, although most of these lists will likely have games most everyone already has heard of. Although now I'm curious about To Be or Not To Be, as I've not heard of this one and its something I could conceivably purchase and play...

Although it isn't my personal favorite game of the year, liked Prune quite a bit. Creative with a nice look and was fun to play.

Like yes, it's an opinion of what a person likes, but it's an opinion, it does not belong under the "Time" banner as if it a proper endorsement. It seems to better belong on someones blog. Considering that Fallout isn't there (and setting aside technical problems), it being omitted is huge.

Also this line,

The antithesis of Sony’s linear, shoot-heavy Uncharted games

The fuck? everything about the Tomb Raider reboots is a rip off of Uncharted turned up to 11. Call Drake a murderer if you want, but when was the last time Drake did this?

Gotta be kidding me with this "article".

Those thoughts rarely provide any critical insight other than "but but my favourite game this year didn't make the list".

You can do a lot of things.

I provided some critical insight as to why I thought MGSV was a pretty lackluster game that doesn't deserve to be on the list. But again, you know, opinions.

Again, it's a topic on a message board. What are people supposed to say? I agree? Cool list? Of course we're going to come in with our thoughts, no matter what they are, even if they're not particularly "constructive."

:(

This little detail says it all really. I'm skipping V even though I've played two MGS games (2 and 4) and I think both are freaking amazing games.

I'll just say play it yourself. But nothing about it was like playing MGS 1-4. Nothing. You don't get that story. You don't get those boss fights. You don't get that soundtrack. You get a big, open, useless open world where you can infiltrate the same enemy outposts ad nausea, if you like that sort of thing. As a fan since 1, playing MGSV was like playing something out of another franchise. It's polished in terms of gameplay, but there's nothing much else to really love about it, unless you love repetition.

I haven't played Witcher 3 yet (I'll be buying it during some black friday sale), but I'm pretty surprised to hear things like this. I thought it was pretty well received.

I keep bouncing off of it. The world is varied, but not coherent (same issue I had with Inquisition), the story is a little dumb and the aesthetic a little "off" and for a game with such a large focus on combat the combat is very, very bad. It's like the pseudo-inverse of something like Fallout 4, which has terrible combat and knows it, has worse writing but it works better in a tighter, more cohesive world.

V is way better than 2 and on a different planet than 4.

Well, to be honest its not really a good idea to go into V anyways if you've only played 2 and 4. 3 and Peacewalker are important titles to it. I went into it with only knowledge of those two games and its kind of confusing. I didn't even play Ground Zeroes so I wound up really lost.

That lighting from the muzzle flash tho...............

Also, much of ROTTR Can be played with stealth, so there's that.

Do you not think "proper endorsements" are opinions too?

I don't understand your complaints, outside of the fact that it looks like their opinions don't line up with yours.

Don't be too sad. Bloodborne has a legitimate shot at winning more GOTY awards than any other game this year. I also expect Ori to show up on a lot of Top 10 Lists even if it doesn't top many. These games were very well received and haven't suffered anything resembling a critical backlash.

The difference is between "best games of 2015" and "games we liked of 2015". Best indicates a metric that was used to deem them the best. If that were the case, Batman (as much as I loved AK) should not be on that list. It's literally unplayable on PC, and a giant fuck you to the PC community.

What metric? Highest metacritic score or highest sales numbers? You can just go to Metacritic yourself, no need to open Time's list.

He represents Time's opinions on games the same way their film and book critics represent Time's opinions on those mediums. His tastes don't line up with yours, but they resonate with plenty of other people.

Best is an entirely subjective assessment and really just means whatever the writer liked anyway.

You're drawing an imaginary line between two things that are the same thing.

Calm down people once Game Awards tells who the GOTY is , all the other sheeple sites will just follow and give it to that game. Just like last year with Dragon Age.

13 million people bought an iPhone 6s or 6s+ within the first three days of launch. Ps4 sales to date are 25 million. I think you should probably recalibrate your idea of who is the mainstream.

I didn't think those 13 million people bought the phone just to play games.

And lets be honest , prune isn't really a candy crush,Clash of clans kinda big title. As far as mobile gaming goes , its mostly on the top titles that people even know of.

Awhile ago the prune dev said he had over 100k sales and 330k installs, just to keep things in perspective. That was in its first month on sale.

Arkham Knight? lolololz

Yeah, given the state of Arkham Knight on PC that has to be a mistake. That whole debacle should exclude that entire game from all GOTY lists considering a third of people cant even play it correctly on decent setups.

Decent list otherwise, glad to see Undertale make it, fantastic game.

What does this have to do with anything

Was this just an opportunity to talk about mobile sales numbers for you?

Poor December games are always given the short stick. The year's not even over yet.

This is the one real legitimate complaint about lists like this. It's a shame that The Talos Principle, for example, was largely shut out of end-of-year recognition because it released in mid-December last year.

So where's your top 10 article since you seem to be the highest authority to judge best games ?
Here, I just published one.

10. Dying Light
9. Cities: Skylines
8. Undertale
7. Halo 5
6. Rocket League
5. Splatoon
4. Ori and the Blind Forest
3. Fallout 4
2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
1. Bloodborne

Switch Ori and Fallout 4 and that's my top 4 as well. Unless you count remasters in which case 4 would be REmake HD and 5 would be Fallout 4.
