Times when your prediction was dead wrong

"Playstion?....the fuck is that? The Saturn will beat it........

LOL! Microsoft entering the VG hardware market? The Xbox brand will be gone after 3 years........

NX for Fall 2016 launch

Splatoon to bomb

It goes hand in hand with my opinions that Zelda 1/2 were both better than LTTP... Metroid was better than Super Metroid, and Mario 1/2/3 >>> World. To this day, I prefer exploring the somewhat janky 8-bit worlds compared to their 16-bit counterparts. Don't get me wrong, though, I LOVE the SNES, just not as much as the NES. Hell I love all the Nintendo systems (minus the WiiU, which I didn't bother with).

It bothers me that you say the Wii U is not a worthy successor to the Wii even though you "never bothered with" it. It really is a shame that you're not the only one who feels this way. :(

I thought the Wii U would attract a Wii-like community of developers and players. Not as large as Wii without a Wii Sports/Wii Fit phenomenon, but the same small- to mid-size games attracting decent numbers, and Nintendo leading the way in that department again.

None of that happened.

Wii U is barely even a successor to Wii.

I thought FOR SURE that Rise of the Tomb Raider would get "delayed" so as not to launch on the same day as Fallout 4.

gg Crystal Dynamics. Hope it was worth it.

NX 2016. I hedged against it, saying that's when Nintendo should launch and looks to be launching but shit happens and so does Nintendo so it might not happen. All the same, I thought it really would happen. I also thought E3 2016 had to be the big payoff after last year and with Nintendo's development times lining up for it. I thought we'd soon find out a lot of what we had to look forward to in the first year of NX. I definitely didn't think Zelda would miss its 30th just like DQ.

I stand by other things being equal 2016 holiday would be the better time to launch. I also stand by that it seems Nintendo was aiming for that time. But the most important part of the prediction failed.

Atm, I really want Nintendo to do something that defies all expectations in a good way rather than a bad way as they've been up to a lot lately. Hopefully E3 Zelda demo is godly and NX makes March and has lots of cool software released for it in its first year.

I cant remember any recent predictions i made that were wrong tbh. Not to show off or anything. :p

I will say, i didnt make this prediction but i never thought Overwatch would be as big as it is with the lack of content it has. It has essentially every problem Battlefront has but everyone seems ok with this one. So i guess thats one.

I thought Nintendo would wait until this year's E3 to showcase NX. At least I wasn't as wrong as some people who were certain it would be shown BEFORE this year's E3.

I expected Splatoon to be an absolute flop. The game didn't click with me, but it still did way better than I ever saw it doing.

I thought the Wii U would do "GameCube numbers at least". I thought the Dreamcast would be the lowest selling console of the generation but survive and compete for the duration nonetheless. Didn't expect Sega's exit from hardware.

I think I went on this glorious rant about how Valve and Sony were going to team up after Portal 2 and make a combined service. It wasn't just wrong ... just utterly batshit insane.

I thought Halo could only get better after Halo 4.

"The next Xbox will obviously destroy the next PlayStation considering how the 360/PS3 battle went."

WELP!

Haha I thought that too.

Could not have been further from what actually happened.

I predicted that total war warhammer and doom would suck.
(Never posted about that tho)

Was gladly surprised!

"Oh man, the successor to the Wii is going to sell like crazy! They'll probably even give it a not-stupid name this time too!"

- me, May 2011

"Well, fuck."

- me, June 2011

Where to begin...

-I'd never use Steam and it wouldn't last.
-Celebrity Deathmatch would be flawed but fun.
-Indie games would never be as fun as AAA games. Or looked upon as major contenders in the market.
-The Wii would be my #1 console when I wanted to be off the PC. Personal failed prediction.
-Splatoon would bomb after they played the beta.
-Street Fighter V would be loaded with content and unlockable content.
-Platinum's TMNT would be fun (if my OT wasn't evident I had some hopes for it).
-We'd never have upgraded consoles in the middle of a cycle. I think I'm about to be wrong. :(

That MGSV would be a good game.

You're doing this wrong.

I wasn't expecting much of DOOM. I still think the initial showing was not very good, but it turned out to be a serious contender for my game of the year, and one of the best games I've played in a long time. I've been singing its praises and every possible instance with friends and people interested.

Conversely, I expected MGSV to deliver a really good story and satisfying conclusion. I started getting worried when it came out that snake doesn't talk much ( but I enjoyed Kiefer Sutherland a lot with the little he had.)

It's completely debatable whether not it provides a satisfying conclusion and story, but for me it was shockingly deficient in that department compared to the series standard.

I thought Xbox Live on the 360 would be a fad thinking no one would 1. pay the subscription and 2. buy the wireless antennae to play online.

I thought the 3DS & Vita would flop. Right about the Vita and it looked like I was going to be right about the 3DS (relatively) but they really, really turned the 3DS around.

"The next Xbox will obviously destroy the next PlayStation considering how the 360/PS3 battle went."

WELP!

Yeah, this one got me. Two generations of the Xbox having a superior GPU, surprise! That being said, it wasn't a complete blind-side as management had changed significantly since 2010.

I predicted the new Doom would be panned by both critics and fans as a soulless cash in that lacked all of what made the originals what they were.

So happy to be wrong.

I also predicted that SFV's launch and Capcom's handling of it as a games as a service example would blow up in their face completely.

So happy to be right.

I predicted that Steam Machines would fail horribly as well.

Really hate that I was right on that one.

I haven't really made any outlandish predictions, but I had definitely given the Kinect no hope based on the waning populairty of motion controls when it was released.

I also completely wrote off the notion of iterative consoles, but that seems to be a thing that is happening.

I do want to give a special shout out to the "Sony too" crowd for being so wrong.

I thought sega finally got things right with the Dreamcast and would soon be back to what they were during the best years of the Genesis and were going to be successful.

9/9/99 After seeing Soul Calibur and Sonic Adventure (and the previews of Shenmue = GOD), I really but really thought Dreamcast was gonna be the next "Playstation".

PS: Also, thought PS Vita would get similar PSP praise and lots of great spin-offs and new franchises. I'm still waiting for Vita's God Of War. lol

I remember completely writing off the Playstation when I first read about it back in the day. Like who the fuck would want some shitty multimedia thing from Sony of all companies? It was another 3DO/CD-i. Obviously the Saturn was going to steamroll that thing. And to be honest, I don't even think I gave the Playstation that much consideration; I just ignored it until I saw Ridge Racer in a store demo one day and my mind was blown. Looked WAY better than Daytona on the Saturn.

So yeah, that stands out to me

Yeah, I believe this was me.

@ Gono, that was me also. Shit I'm such a moron.

This topic makes me happy that I predicted the DS, Wii, and Vita doing about as well as they all did. Yes, I thought that the Wii would be a massive success and that the DS would show a significant amount of growth from the GBA (though I didn't predict the "blue ocean," DS strategy with games like Brain Age and Nintendogs doing well, I just thought that the DS would experience exponential growth from the GBA considering how much better the technology seemed to me in 2004).

I don't know what I thought about the PSP or 3DS or Wii U though. I don't think I really thought much of the PSP prior to release, then when it came out it was a big deal but I still didn't know what to think of it. I didn't really know what to predict regarding the 3DS, I guess I thought that it would probably continue the DS's success but I think in 2011 I didn't realize how well the DS was still doing. Once the disappointing launch sales came in I think I believed that it would recover but not hit the DS's heights, though. And the Wii U I thought would be successful but I was skeptical of, so I guess I got that one wrong.

I guess, something else I got wrong: I thought Dillian's Rolling Western would see Pikmin-like success, where Dillian becomes one of Nintendo's new mainstay characters.

my douche answer: I expected the xbox one to be an interesting and valuable piece of hardware for me. instead I bought it at launch and have turned it on twice since. :(

my regular answer: doom

I thought Splatoon was going to be one of the biggest bombs on Wii U. I think that's the only time I have been certain of something and dead wrong. I still kinda can't believe how well it's doing.

- I thought Vita would start to sell better after two years
- I thought WiiU would sell about 30m (not dead wrong, but it turned out to be a bigger flop than I expected)
- I thought Batman Arkham Asylum was going to be awful

I remember seeing the very first Sims trailer (this is going way back) and guffawing, saying "nobody is going to play that, what are they thinking???".
Turns out to be one of the highest selling franchises.... I think I humbly decided to never make game industry predictions ever again that day.

The easiest way to hear God laugh is to make industry predictions.

EDIT: Another wrong prediction: I would eventually figure out Street Fighter. I've purchased many entries in this (and other fighting game franchises), each time thinking that I would, one day, buckle down and figure out how to play competitively. Even with SFV, I just learn the special moves, and then smash buttons when things get crazy.

Keep trying, man. I believe in you.

I thought all of SFV's problems would be fixed in a month. PFFFFFTTT

I thought Dark Souls 2 would be the best Souls game, and it turned out to be the worst. Still great, but the worst.

I always thought Subscription-based MMOs would always be the biggest waste of money ever. Then I played A Realm Reborn.

- I thought Batman Arkham Asylum was going to be awful

To be fair, a lot of people thought this.

Every E3 when I predict Nintendo shows off Star Tropics 3 as a big reveal. I still say it's only a matter of time until I'm right though.

-At that time I also considered the 3DO to be a success and held it on higher esteem than the Playstation. Even the Atari Jaguar

-Initially I thought the Playstation 2 would be less successfull than the PS1

-I thought EA would never make another 3D soccer game after the mediocre FIFA97 and would revert to classic FIFA96. Actua Soccer 2 was so much better

-When my dad told me he'd buy finally a computer in 1994, I thought he'd buy an Amiga....

-If someone told me that there would be no Mortal Kombat arcade game after 4, I'd never have believed him.

-Arcades and Sega

-I thought that Symphony of the Night would make all older Castlevanias fade to oblivion...

-I thought Nintendo would return to their former selves with the Gamecube. Unfortunately there were very few exceptions.

-I thought that after the flop of Xbox, Microsoft would never dare to launch the 360.

"Cloud Strife will never get added to Smash Bros."

Speaking of which, I'm praying to be wrong about the FFVII remake, but so far I've hit it right on the head with predictions regarding that one.
