Times you felt bad for the villain

Main antagonist of Tales of Graces f.

Said villain was driven to the point of exhaustion, paranoia and madness due to one of your party members hunting him down for years. All he ever wanted was to sleep but he can't because he knows said character will find him and kill him.

Unless this was a spoiler, you've sold me on this game.

The Grunts in Halo. How is there not some ethical crisis in that game when you're gunning down enemies who don't really want to fight and pose little to no threat?

Put Master Chief in the docks, I day. Dude needs to explain himself.

Dude had some terrible lackeys. He's the best part of the story.

Except Handsome Jack
vented those scientist into space with little evidence one was going to betray him, thus a valid reason for Lilith, Roland and Moxxi not to trust him. Let's not forget he wanted to keep the Alien death eye, a weapon that was already proven to be super dangerous.
Lilith causing Jack's scar seemed like a poorly written excuse too.
The guy was an asshole ready to become a psychopath, regardless of what would trigger it.

Let's not forget
around TPS Angel is supposedly already locked away, he gets no sympathy points.

Regarding your first point,
He vented them because he'd already been almost killed from letting his guard down with the Meriff. Remember, he was going to let him live, but almost died for it. Throughout Pre-Sequel he keeps getting shit on by everyone.
He even references this when you begin the RK5 fight.

But like I said, he wasn't a wholly sympathetic character. Yes, he's every bit as bad as he is known to be. I just think I can understand his rage from the constant betrayals. In the end, only Wilhelm and Nisha were loyal. Even Timothy let on that he wasn't fond of Jack.

Tales of Symphonia,
Mithos. Went insane after his sister died :(

This is a good one.

Marche dragging everyone out of there escapist fantasy.

He was just trying to keep it real and everyone tried to murder him on several occasions for it.

This article sums it up the best lmao:

With imaginations fueled by films like The Neverending Story and books like The Chronicles of Narnia, you probably have daydreamed about being whisked off into a magical faraway land where elves pranced, wizards roamed, and your alcoholic father doesnÂ’t beat you. In Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, this fantasy becomes reality for two socially maligned children when theyÂ’re transported by an ancient book to a supernatural world called Ivalice where their deepest longings manifest themselves into existence. The perpetually ill and wheelchair-bound Doned Radiuju is restored to perfect health, and the impoverished, bullied Mewt RandellÂ’s deceased mother is returned to life as queen of the realm.

Unfortunately for the two, DonedÂ’s older brother, Marche, also finds himself in their Utopian fantasy land and he isnÂ’t quite as ecstatic about the change in scenery. This is probably due largely to the fact that Ivalice is a fucked up place that entertains mortal combat as a regulated activity, complete with referees who penalize players for improperly murdering one another. Suffice to say, he promptly begins figuring out a way to escape Ivalice so he can return to a life of normalcy and Mewt and Doned can go back to being unloved outcasts.

Marche succeeds in destroying the threads holding Ivalice together, but itÂ’s revealed that things wonÂ’t revert to normal unless everyone who was transported there actually wants to go home. That means convincing Mewt heÂ’s better off being bullied, destitute and motherless, and Doned that walking is severely overrated. When the two brothers confront one another, Marche guilt trips Doned into submission, claiming that their parentsÂ’ preferential treatment made him envious.

Now, it’s certainly arguable that more attention was paid to Doned because he’s a sickly child confined to a goddamn wheel chair, but the obvious is clearly lost on Marche who believes being a neglected child is a much more horrific alternative to spending your life as a paraplegic. Somehow, this completely illogical gambit works and Doned concedes, embracing the darker, more fatalistic moral of the story that Square Enix probably never intended: “real life sucks, get used to it.”

I always assumed the Grunts were kind of like slave soldiers for the covenant. Explaining why they're pretty crap and don't seem as committed as the other races. That or they're just massive cowards.

There's that little Napoleon looking dwarf in Resident Evil 4 that Leon shoots with a crossbow. It seems really painful as he scurried away. I've always felt bad.

This SUCKS!!! My God of War 3 Copy is glitched wtf

Obviously, this post contains spoilers. I finally got around to finishing GOW 3. Awesome game, and it is freaking gorgeous! I got all the way to the final boss, Zeus. I got to this section where you walk up to him and start beating the living hell out of him, and you are prompted to repeatedly press circle. So, I kept doing it for a good 5 minutes or so. But my thumbs couldn't take it anymore. So, I paused the game, took a break and switched thumbs and kept mashing, and the freaking thunderfuck wouldn't die. I finally gave up and reset the console hoping I would have better luck next time and the game wouldn't get stuck. NOPE Same shit. The guy just doesn't die. Anyone else have the same problem?

how convenient that the massive hoard of gold is missing in this art work, it almost looks like Astrae is a victim...

Also, lol at the NieR and SotC replies, boy you didn't get the games at all did you?

I have to agree, however, with people saying Saren. He was just desperately trying to save the galaxy and if you are good/bad enough you can convince him to admit his own sins and seek redemption. He would be the best character ever if he survived and you could recruit him in 2/3 instead of Garrus. I love that guy, rip Saren :(

Andrew Ryan
. Everything he worked ridiculously hard for ended up chasing him to the very depths of hell
or the ocean as it's better known
and screwing everything up for him.

After some more thinking I'd also like to say Sarah Kerrigan from Starcraft. Betrayed by her own kind and turned into a Zerg, than hunted down by her own kind.

he was a necromancer that was trying to bring back his wife and daughter and his spell backfired and fused them together and now all he is trying to do is fix it and bring his wife and daughter back and you go and murder him

Was trying to find a character that hasn't been posted yet. I go with Malygos from the (World of) Warcraft universe.

The original blue dragon aspect. They almost got completely wiped out by another being corrupted (Deathwing). Then insisted on making magic not available for everyone, because it's dangerous.

Slowly lost his mind because of the bloodshed Deathwing caused, so "we" took him out.

Nier's villains in NG+.

Also, Psycho Mantis, Sniper Wolf and Solidus Snake from Metal Gear. I don't count Fox and The Boss as "villains". And any of the ghosts in Fatal Frame/Project Zero, they've always had a shitty time so when they're trying to attack you in desperation I can't help but feel sorry for them.

My game glitched and it wouldn't stop for over 15 minutes. I know Kratos hates the dude, but sometimes enough is enough, man....

It wasn't a glitch
You are supposed to stop hitting him on your own. It also took me several minutes to realize this.

I was more sorry about Poseidon. That dude gets brutalized.

Lisa Trevor from REmake comes to mind.

At first you just encounter a grotesque monster who wants to beat you senseless, but after a while you find notes and research papers regarding Lisa; honestly one of the saddest and better back stories of minor characters in the RE universe.
Poor Lisa and her mother were invited to Spencer Mansion after her father completed the building; Just to be certain Trevor would never leak out the secrets they used them both as test subjects. Years and years of experimenting drove her mad and mutated her in the abomination that haunts the cabin and catacombs. I felt sympathy when she finally found her mother

Kuja from Final Fantasy IX gets a vote too

While not the most memorable villain in the series, (I do like him though) he too is a bit tragic;
Sure he seems confident and all powerfull, but in the end... Garland thought of him of just like Brahne and Kuja did about Vivi; nothing more but a puppet. Only usefull until the day Zidane would be strong enough to replace him. Yes, he killed countless people, he destroyed an entire world when he aquired Trance, but he just wanted to be a real boy with a soul of his own. He even saved Zidane (well I suppose that's what happened at the Lifa Tree) and the party when the tree went out of control.

I'm interested in the explanation, but there is no way I'd of ever sacrificed my daughter, or someone that I've taken in as my child, for anyone on this planet so I empathize with Joel completely. Neil Druckmann actually wrote that game from the perspective of being a new father and realizing that he'd do anything, even horrible things, for the love of his child and that's something I can totally relate to. I never found a single person on this planet that I care for even a fraction of a percent as much as my little girl, and I fully admit that I'd take anyone apart for her if I had to. As I said, it's not whether you think he's wrong or right, (he's objectively wrong but that's not the point here), it's about how being a parent creates a bias in you that blinds you to anything in the world mattering as much as your child. Hell disagreeing with what he did just serves to make him a more interesting character and bring up some even more interesting questions about what causes a human being to feel this way when they have a child. The Last of Us does very well the best thing any story can possibly do; it inspires discussion.

I have a three year old who was one when I played the game, but I was no less appalled by his actions.
For starters I would have given up my child on faith that some good could come of it, but even if we go by Joels actions to save the girl, which would have been your choice, he does it in a messed up way. He had the girl, and Marlene even put down her gun. But then what happens? He kills her execution style. This is the most spineless thing he could do. It shows no sense of decency, honor or backbone. You do not just kill unarmed people. He should have took her gun and walked away. If she pursues then the honorable thing to do is to give her a fighting chance. Then he outright lies to Ellie. This is a straight dick move.

Caius Ballad.
Losing a loved one is rough and can mess you emotionally having to watch the woman you care for die repeatedly over and over and over again in some cruel time loop is just unthinkable.

Demon's Souls/Dark Souls/II Bosses: The Thread. So many of them...

Also, Gruntilda only wanted to be pretty.
Isn't the final boss of DS2 like some evil cartoon character though?.
No,
Nashandra
is not an evil cartoon character. If you are talking about
Aldia
, he is more of an extra boss than an actual final boss.

He is also the biggest joke boss in the series. Ridiculously easy. Poor guy.

While neither of them are exactly innocent...and you may still dislike them, there is an air of sadness that seems to surround the villains in the Portal series. They may not realize it, but their actions don't seem to be their own.

Yeah, things were written in a very good way. Excellent games.

Oh, I almost forgot. Monster Hunter of course. Those beasts are totally cool and you kill them because you're a violent psycho.

Surprised no one's mentioned Skull Kid yet.

Poor dude was abandoned by his mates so went off to look for new ones. Got in a bit of mischief and ended up nicking Majora's Mask which gave him godlike powers.

Kid's got issues, sure, but I felt kinda bad for him, especially when
the mask throws Skull Kid aside

He wasn't going to take a chance of her shooting him anyway. After all the shit that people do to kill other people in that world I would have gunned her ass down anyways. They were going to kill Joel anyways, he owed them nothing.

Akane. She did what she did to survive... Can't blame her. :(
Of course not. I mean sure, Akane is definitely not a good person, but most of her actions are justified.

IMO she is the best Zero Escape character for a reason.
Poor Lisa Trevor
I don't understand how Joel could be the villain of the game. He did the right thing in the end, after all :P
Metal Gear Solid for 2 characters

Sniper Wolf
*sob*. Lovely accent. Poor Otaco. And yes, love does bloom on a battlefield.

Psycho Mantis.
I know he's a horrible person but his life was fucked. Plus he helped us in the end.

Dyne from FFVII- Village burned down by Shinra Soldiers, wife and friends murdered, went crazy because he lost his daughter
who actually was alive
, got hand pretty much shot off and fell off a giant cliff.

Basically any character that either wanted to be good but after terrible things happen to them, they lose it and become evil.

I totally forgot about that scene in FF7, thanks for reminding me :)

That was one of the coolest sequences in the game!

Really?
She had him dead to rights but she didn't kill him, she put her gun down. It just made the whole scenario all the more messed up.

King Vendrick from Dark Souls 2

He was tricked by a fragment of Manus (Nashandra) into stealing from the Giants and causing a huge war that broke his kingdom until a misterious figure appeared last second and defeated the Giant King (a time traveled Bearer of the Curse).

He also felt something was off with Nashandra and hid his armor under a gate that could only be opened by a non-hollowed Undead (again the Bearer of the Curse), also set up inside a crypt and placed his best man, Velstadt with the instruction of "nobody comes in, nobody comes out". He waited patiently until the curse has consumed him and guarded his ring until the next monarch could come to retrieve it.

Also, he set up for the Bearer of the Curse could reclaim the Crowns, he made possible for the Bearer of the Curse to achieve what he could not, and in the end, break the curse... but as always in the Dark Souls world... victory came at a price, the Bearer of the Curse broke the curse itself, but only to himself, not the world. He is now a dark inmortal king of a decadent world, and exactly as Vendrick tells him... he must harness the dark.

Vendrick knew... he was a kind monarch who allowed a noble sucessor to surpass him, when you find him he is just a shadow, a husk of a titan.

With regret, you must kill him.
