Tipping Question: Ordering at the counter, but they bring you food

So this is something that I've noticed recently -- casual restaurants where I order at the counter, you pay the person at the counter, you sit down, and then someone brings you food and acts like your waiter (refill water, do you want anything else, etc).

So, are these people getting paid like wait staff, or are their wages not based on tips? Should I tip? (For the record, I'm against tipping, but I always tip because I get that these people have their wages based on tipping). But if there wages aren't based on tipping, then I'm not going to tip because they're not handling my check, someone at the counter is. Who gets that tip? Is it communal? What's going on?

THANKS GAF

The restaurant I work at operates similarly, and AFAIK everyone there gets paid at least min. wage. We still have people tip, but at less frequency and probably with lesser amounts than at full-service restaurants.

I don't know how the tips should work in regards to who gets what, the owners take the money out of the tipping jar by the registers so :/

Most Carl's Juniors you pay at the register and then they bring out the food, but you don't tip there because it's not actually full service. Since you're describing someone bringing you your food and your drinks, I would call that full service and would say you should tip that person. Also, if they take away your plates and you don't have to throw away your own food, that's another sign that you should be tipping. Consider that you tip at a buffet, even though you get your own food, and at most of them you get your own drinks. You still tip the busser because they take care of the dishes.

What about Sonic? They always pause and stare at me.....

Pretty sure we've already had this thread. At least four or five times. The result is always the same: Everyone agrees that all people should be tipped 30% at all times for all things.

Only tip full service waitors/waitresses, valets, bellhops, food deliverymen, and hair cutter.

I'm too broke and interested in other things to keep up with tipping etiquette.

I generally don't tip unless the service is exceptional. But I'm not from the US, so it's not expected to make up for the lack of a liveable wage.

yes, you tip those people. the only time you typically don't is if you're just picking up takeout.

I'll usually throw a couple of dollars their way if they serve me and bring me refills. Especially if its a mom and pop place I really like.

Noodles and company works like this and has an no tipping policy, as I understand it.

If I pay with the credit card at the register before getting my food, my assumption is no tip. If the waiter brings me the bill at the end of the meal, that's when tipping comes into play.

Yeah, do you pay before or after the meal? I would say tipping is optional in the real actual meaning of optional if you paid before the meal. Nothing expected, no cultural obligation, feel free to leave a buck or two on the table if you want.

They started doing this at the Dairy Queen (DQ) down the street from me. I've never tipped DQ before and I'm not gonna start now when they decided to bring it to the table after ordering. Also there's no waiter, the cashier brings the food and also when you have ordered dessert they ask if you want it now or later... so you can eat the dessert while you wait for your food or can eat your dessert with your food.

It's... strange.

Ehh, if you grabbed your food and everything it would be a no tip situation. Since they bring you water and stuff you can probably tip them, not necessarily the full amount though. Also take into consideration the price of the meal, if it seems more expensive than it should be don't tip them.
