Titanfall Beta (PC/Xbone) Impressions (No Key Begging/Trading or I will ban you!)

Offering something that is a complete waste of time... is a waste of time.

Again: We won. Let the round be over. If there was a point to the Evacuation phase, I wouldn't be complaining. As it is, it's just an extra mode that has no point in the round or game.

Hurr derr. "Fun" is entirely subjective. The main round is fun. The evacuation isn't fun because there's no point to it.

Redeem themselves how? By killing the winners? Great you killed the winners. You still lost!

And yet in TF2 it's entirely pointless there as well. IIRC vanilla TF2 on launch didn't even have anything for those lulls in rounds and that's why the "humiliation" phase happened while it loaded the next segment/phase for the next part of the capture point maps. I'm guessing it's a Source-engine quirk and it isn't a major annoyance but it's so pointless that it annoys the hell out of me. I just want to get to the next round/win instead of having to wait 2 mins for the stupid evacuation phase.

It's all about bringing in story elements into the game. They lost but in real life, losing means retreating. That's what this is.

You know you earn experience during that phase right? Besides the fact that it's fun, that gives it more purpose than you're implying. It's an extra chance for both teams to get an XP bonus.

The reason is fun, you might have heard of it. Clearly you don't find it entertaining but I do. It is a nice final stage to the battle. It gives the losers a chance to save face after their defeat. :)

It really does, so many times I've had a smug grin on my face when I'm the only 1 in the ship, or when I've gotten in and dropped a nade outside and cluster killed a group of enemies trying to take it out.

Nuking your titan and ejecting into the drop ship just as it takes off while the kill counter pops up a bunch of kills for you is best though.

Call down my Titan, run across map to find people to kill. Never stopped moving, never got rodeo'd, never see anyone. Proceed to get crushed by someone else's Titanfall.

Never before have I been so entertained watching a death cam. I'm not even mad.

It took until yesterday for me to realize the TitanOS warns you if an enemy Titanfall is about to come down on / near you.

I was on Fracture, shooting at people, when the OS chimed up and was like "WARNING. Enemy Titanfall" or something.

I paused, went "Whaa...OH SHIT!" and immediately dashed to the side. I barely dodged the enemy Titan as it landed where I had just been standing.

Huge smile on my face.

90 sec lobby time is big, but I'm thinking it would be useful for coordinating burn card strats among the whole team. too bad no one voice chats at all.

Yeah not many people have been talking on this but when you do find people who do you can coordinate quite well. I think the 90 second break are pretty good gives you a chance to have a quick break.

The burn card that gives you an instant damage core is crazy in LTS. It pretty much allows you to take out one Titan easily, which really swings the whole round in your team's favor. But the craziest part is that your damage core is ready to pop again at the beginning of every round so long as you don't die.

You can see when a titan has the damage core online can't you. Pretty sure they have a white glow around the top of the main body so just keep your distance and wait for him to cool off using your dashes to dodge the first barrage. It is still a powerful burn card though considering it lasts up until you switch sides.

I went into this somewhat skeptical, but I'm not feeling the "It's like CoD but X" comments at all. If X is an important mechanic that dramatically changes how the game plays, then it's not just like CoD.

For me, movement is what makes Titanfall very different from other modern shooters. Unless I get taken by surprise at point blank range or in a wide open space with no structures nearby, I actually stand a decent chance of escaping my opponent or getting into a better position where I might be able to kill them instead. Yes, the TTK is still fairly low and health regenerates fairly quickly, but having the ability to bounce off of solid surfaces and fly through the air like a superball completely breaks the "I saw you first so I win" paradigm associated with CoD and the like.

yup, especially if you use stim like me--the second I take damage I activate it and can bail out/double my health regen speed.

Why is there an Evacuation phase? It's entirely pointless in Conquest (er-whatever they call it here) and Deathmatch.

If there was a "Rush" mode like Battlefield or somewhere whereby you lost by failing to get the objectives? Sure, I could kinda see a point for that. But here? Right now? Just let the round be over and declare us winners, please?

Why are there video games?

I'm genuinely bummed that the beta is over today - I've had a lot of fun over the past few days on both the Xbox and PC version. I'll be passing the nearly three weeks with Bravely Default and Donkey Kong.

Before I would have said that the beta is a bad idea because people will burn out on the game before the release, now I fully retract any thought of that. I probably wasn't going to get it before, now I'm almost certainly going to get it at launch. Game is really, really good. The burn cards are innovative, moreso than the Titan's themselves. The one's you choose completely changes the game, yet still you never feel it is unfair. And best of all they only last one match so you never feel like you have to hoard or save them, yet they are still powerful 80 secs off your Titan build time is nothing in the hands of a bad player, but it can be used so tactically to get back-2-back Titans and rapidly turn a game around.

Anybody know when the beta stops in GMT time??! I wanna broadcast some gameplay tonight after work (so about 6pm GMT) to some friends who want to see what it's like but I don't know when they stop the beta today, or if they already have stopped it :(

For some reason my Kinect won't transmit my voice to the lobby / my team. I hear other people talk, but not as many as I'd expect.

It's probably something dumb in the options I'm missing.

There is no point to any of it. Guess that means none of it is fun.

You should remember that part about it being "subjective" when you write off entire sections of the game based purely on your own opinion. ;)

I don't really get the point of the evacuation ... but I like it. It's a twist on gameplay that I had never thought of before and it's silly fun trying to rush to the evac point and either escape or catch people escaping. I've never seen the ship get shot down though.

Also, I think the Evacs will make more sense in the full game, that has the "multiplayer campaign" type thing. From all the previews I've seen/read, they all seem to suggest that there is this "Campaign like" blend in with the Multiplayer, which is something we did not see from the Beta... which seemed basically just like any other multiplayer shooter. Let's say that the multiplayer campaign has you going from map to map trying to eliminate the rebels or over throw the government, then the evac system could be used to try to "salvage" a battle so that you don't lose a map or something.

I'm really interested to see what the Multiplayer Campaign means.

It also operates as another way to award Burn Cards. Several times I've gotten rare Burn cards from escaping or killing the evac dropship.

Still confused as to what indicates a rare, though. Thought it was colored wording like for Ghost Protocol, but that doesn't seem to be it.

I also really want to know how burn cards are awarded besides for Challenges. I started capping out on challenges last night for the weapons / loadouts I used, so the intake slowed down dramatically.

By the way, I got a burn card for Echo something. Man is that trippy to play with. Constant skeletons everywhere.

My guess would be that it's some series multiplayer matches that use the same basic gametypes, but with added bonuses/penalties based on who wins and loses and extra dialogue that provides more context for each mission.

Something like what Valve was going for with Hydro in Team Fortress 2, except on a series of maps and gametypes instead of one evolving map.

I would love it if each of the different titans had different OS voices. Almost like they represent a different evolution or direction of the OS itself. Could Imagine the Heavy titan (can't remember it's name) having a gruff, deep male voice.

Video of a good round of Hardpoint I had today.
Love that some people have no idea what to do when you rodeo them!

I rodeo'd a Titan last night. Guy jumped out. He jumped back in the Titan. I re-rodeo'd.

We repeated this three straight times. Finally, I got off and didn't get back on. He got out again assuming I had re-rodeo'd. Shot him.

It's a shame you stop getting XP from the same Titan at a certain point, but it was getting kind of silly.

TitanFall killed my power supply. :( Smelled something burning, doomed a Titan, then the PC froze while the enemy Titan exploded.

Now it won't power up.

Holy shit I had the same think happen to my GPU in my Alienware. Fortunately it was under warranty and they are sending me a 760. I hope this isn't pervasive. Anyone else have issues running the game on PC?

There's nothing special about TitanFall in that way. That PSU was about 3-4 years old and wasn't the greatest to begin with. It does push my aging gaming PC pretty hard though. My CPU/GPU are overclocked fairly aggressively and it's pulling a lot of wattage at max.

Would not mind them getting rid of the evacuation shit, it's not like the rounds last long so I just want to get into the next game asap, it's why I like TF2 servers that give you about 5 seconds to finish the losers off at the end of the round. Fun the first two or three times but after the 20th? Nah, just load me up baby.

I appreciate that the grunt chatter makes you feel like a hero. "We've got Titan support now!" or "Why do they get to be a pilot?" "Just watch. They're on a whole other level."

It makes me want to protect them from the mean other team pilots who make them panic as they are casually gunned down.

no, cod has that.

So does Titanfall. I can hack the Spectres with no issues. I can drop kick five of them with no issues.

#2EZ as the PC kids say.

I don't like Burn Cards either. Just a pointless annoyance with anything that isn't that "double your XP on anything that is a REAL player."

LMG kicks wildly, the replacement "more damage" guns for things you already can equip is pretty pointless (more damage for a bit, whoo). It's supposed to be a Killstreak/Deathstreak replacement but even in Call of Duty I don't like the user-controlled Killstreaks. At least in Titanfall you have a chance of boarding/"Rodeoing" them to kill them.

But since everyone is going to use Smoke (if they do, the smart play is to rush an enemy Titan, smoke them to disable them in two seconds flat while firing your Rockets and Lock-on Rockets at them quickly. Surviving in your Titan? Fuck that on these small maps!) anyway, Boarding them is kinda pointless if they have that equipped. Depends on the round.

I will say the game gave me a "Battlefield moment" in regards to boarding a Titan, disabling it with a pistol, jumping off/rocketing into the air (dunno how I did that, caught an eject ride?) landed ON another Titan/boarded them and disabled them as well before jumping off, double-jumping and catching another Titan in three seconds flat from the last one and disabling that one as well.

But that isn't worth $60 for me.
