TMNT Mutants In Manhattan Review Thread

Need licensed shovelware quickly?
Platinum Games is the answer!

Seems like they'll happily tarnish their reputation for a quick buck.

The question of reputation here strikes me as a funny one. Maybe it's because I still expect licensed games to be garbage, especially if they're from Activision, but I find it hard to hold stuff like this against Platinum. That'd be like being mad at Raven for helping turn the dials on the great all-consuming COD engine instead of actually making a cool new game of their own. Gotta pay the bills.

But if say, Nier or Scalebound turn out poorly, that's a big old red flag

I guess Activision wanted to see just how low budget they could take Platinum

It is an odd thing.
Should you be mad that Activision did not give that much money to the game or do you be mad that Platinum Games would agree to the pathetic budget and ruin their reputation to make some profit?

Oh please. Did Wayforward ruin their reputation by making a bunch of so-so/bad licensed games?

Transformer was every bit of shovel ware as this, and it turned out great. This is more the team behind it not being good(Legend of Korra team?!), doubt it would have been much better if the same team spent more time on it.

Some of their previous cash-ins were fine though, I think Korra and Transformers actaully helped improve their reputation for "simple but competent games".
I must admit I'm disappointed by the feedback on this game, I expected better from them.

They're the ruthless mercenaries of game development I guess. :P

In general I'd honestly take more product being produced with 50% being stellar gameplay wise over a developer only making a few games a gen. Haven't picked up the game yet but this definitely seems to be their low point for them over their whole career given that it had a much bigger budget than Korra.

Wayforward even made a shitty TMNT game and they're doing fine

People seem rather smug about the fact that Platinum made a bad game. It doesn't make them a bad developer because they've constantly proven themselves with their other games. Work is work

They were all about doing AAA original IP in the beginning, maybe these money projects are just not given the same attention to detail (which is not cool).

A lot of the reviews seems to point that there's a good base here, but lacks polish and is too short. I think the blame falls mostly to Activision.

Game clearly needed more time, is true too that PG knew, probably, beforehand how much time and budget they had, so maybe they needed to approach the project in a different way.

Overall, is a shame really. But I'm sure Nier and Scalebound will be good.

Pretty much this. It is amusing to watch people bend logic to try and shift blame away from a developer who has been rather inconsistent this generation......

The truth is market realities, neither of the two parties are to blame. The fact is there is no place for stylized over the top arcade games on the AAA level.

I see the Activision licensed games and Star Fox Zero as low budget projects, while Scalebound is an attempt at appealing to western audiences. The only way I see Platinum bouncing back is if Nintendo specifically asks for Bayonetta 3.

Star Fox Zero is an amazing low budget project if it was one. They'll still get good will from Star Fox Zero IMO in the long run(especially compared to transformers and Kora). Other than Bayo 2 and W101 though nothing from them has blew my socks off this gen. I didn't pick up transformers yet though.

Still buying lol
Platinum at their worst is still better than EA and Ubisoft games at their best. Can see a lot of Assassins Creed fans in here

Right. Let me know when they release 3 hour games for full price ane I'll make sure to avoid those too.

How do you fuck this up so bad after nailing Transformers? Terrible

MadWorld and Korra were not great games either, both were really mediocre. Not played Transformers yet but that was directed by Metal Gear Rising's director, whereas this was headed by the Korra director. I think at this point the guy just isn't good, time to give somebody else director duties aside from him to shake things up and see if anyone else can do it better with the licensed stuff next time since Korra and this TMNT game, by all accounts seems to tell the story.

Korra was trash too. Rather than it being solely the fault of either the developer or publisher I think I'll go with the far more likely scenario of it being a mixture of both: not enough time and money and a poor use of the resources available.

It's a shame because the game looks like it could have been fun. But Korra really was utter crap compared to what I'd come to expect, so I don't think this deserves the benefit of the doubt either.

Surprised people were expecting good things from a licensed Activision game. People on here overrate that Transformers game too. It was okay, but it was no where near the level that is usually expected from a Platinum action game.

It's probably more about having enough games in development to keep the whole studio working on something, rather than having to lay off staff between projects.

I think Transformers is undoubtedly worse than any of Platinum's "big" titles, but it still holds up well - I think it's really only a few steps below Metal Gear Rising.

Transformers clearly got more resources than Korra or TMNT though.

I don't believe I'm that dense. You are stretching all over the place to avoid any criticism towards Platinum.

They made arguably the best TMNT in decades. Congrats Platinum!

I believe you're quite dense, or trolling.

Try to think it this way: imagine you are very good at something Sanjuro. Say that you are good at making cakes. Now imagine that you are asked to make 50 cakes by tomorrow morning, with crap ingredients. Who will be to blame if the cakes turn out shit? Sanjuro, the cake master? Or his employes, who was too stingy?

What if Lex Luthor steals 40 of them?

Between this, Star Fox Zero's reception, and the president unceremoniously leaving with nobody saying nothing positive about it...not a good year for ol' Platinum Games.

Nier Automata better be LIT, and that's probably 2017 smh

This is my reaction as well.

What a drop from what at first seemed to be building up to finally being the dream TMNT game fans have been craving for, to becoming one of the biggest examples of wasted potential due to (what I can only assume to be) heavy budget and time constraints put forward by Actinovision. It actually hurts, especially because the art on the characters looks good enough to keep wishing the gameplay turned out better!

Possibly the biggest disappointment of the year for me gaming wise. I had this in my Gaf top 10 most anticipated games even. Sigh...

If you were good at something, shouldn't you be able to identify that you cannot make the cakes with those ingredients within that time frame?

I'm not the one trolling or dense in this scenario.

Sorry about Platinum Games.

Kamiya is the only talent there, everything else by Platinum mediocre to bad.

If they fucked up Nier I will be pissed.
