TNA IMPACT! THE VIDEO GAME

Penguin, you and I need to hop online some time. I haven't been on there yet. I've been stuck three days on the damn Tomko v. AJ Styles match.

Spam the spinning neckbreaker and clothesline. They can't reverse it. And go for the pin in your corner. You'll get the three count before Tomko can reach you.

what button do i to get outside interference in order to finish the match?

what do you mean i win by just using wrestling moves?

that isn't tna.

I just beat the Story Mode on Indie(Normal) difficulty. Well, the core gameplay is there, and I did enjoy most Single\Ultimate X matches, but the game has tons of problems:
1)A total lack of variety - only a few number of different matches and a really small set of moves that make some matches boring and repetitive to watch.
2)Create a wrestler mode sucks - very few options to optimize your wrestler. Also, when you choose a finisher/combo/entrance you can't really see what you choose, all you get is a lame description(or at least I didn't find a way to view them=watch your character perform them before you choose), which is pretty dumb.
3)A.I is stupid and cheap - and can spoil matches. It completely ruins tag team matches, every time you try to pin someone, his partner will come and try to break the pin, but when someone tries to pin, your tag team partner will just stand and do nothing. And for some reason the stairs to the rings are like a trap, you can bump into them and fall easily.
4)Unbalanced - especially in later matches. You'll do 2 finishers on someone and he wouldn't even be red, but when he does one finisher on you you're almost done. It'll take like 3 finishers to pin someone in later matches.
5)Reversals - I actually really liked the way they did 'em, my only problem is that there are some moves that can't be reversed which is pretty stupid, 'cause you can do them on someone until he's weared down enough for you to pin him.

Thing is, even in spite all these problems I had some fun with the game, and I don't regret buying it. I just hope the sequel would adress these issues, 'cause they're the only ones keeping it from being the best wrestler out there.

Outside interference has never been the problem. It's the insane amount of damage I have to do to them to get a three. I had AJ's body in red and his legs and arms in orange, did my finisher and he somehow kicked out with plenty of time to spare.

But thanks for the tips on the moves, I'll give them a try.

I've heard a lot of similar comments from a friend of mine that's big on wrestling games. I wonder if Midway would try to extend the life of the game by releasing DLC or will save enhancements for a sequel. Given that they've left hooks in there for add-ons, it makes me wonder if it's possible for them to release move-set packs to enlarge the wrestlers' arsenals. In theory, I suppose they could add new match types too provided the hooks are in the right place.

But then again, this is Midway.

Just finished it, and holy crap is Kurt Angle a cheap son of a bitch. I'll hit him with easily 100 moves and he gets me with about 10 and I'm down for the count. I beat Jarrett easily though using the same techniques I used with Angle. It's Ninja Gaiden 2 levels of cheap.

This game sounds like Mortal Kombat: TNA.
Yep, you're right. Except...it isn't.

I finally beat the AJ/Tomko match. Jesus Christ that was a pain in the ass. I finally just had to get every chair outside the ring and just start beating the hell out of them. Rather cheap way to win, but fuck it. That was too much.

Overall, I agree with the majority of the sentiments in here.

1. Moveset - I guess I've played too much SvR online over the past couple of years because the limited moveset doesn't bother me. On SvR, everyone does running grapples and strikes and usually the same three or four moves in a row the entire match. I don't find myself ever just spamming one move or a couple, despite the shitty matches some times. While I want rear grapples, running grapples, etc. I don't think that's too much of a problem.

2. Gameplay - This is where TNA really shines over SvR. The gameplay is fast and exciting. The physics are great and I love the animations. Reversing is too easy and I've had times where the A.I. just reverses every fucking move I do and it becomes a pain in the ass. But I love how everything is just so smooth. I do a back body drop near the ropes and the guy will go flying out of the ring. I run around outside and hit the steps, I fall over. These are small things, but I really like them. I also like how you can chain moves and reverse reversals. I had three reversals going at one point before I finally got chokeslammed.

3. Graphics - I can't believe this is on UE3. I'm impressed. It looks so much better than SvR. Even the crowd looks better. Hopefully THQ will step up their game. Doubt it though.

4. Story - This has been a letdown for me. It just takes itself way too seriously to be as overthetop as it is. Nothing inherently wrong with it. I just really don't care for it.

5. A.I. - The main problem with the game. It seems at times it's telepathic and knows everything I'm going to do. I had one match where I tried every grapple and strike that I knew of, it reversed them. It even reserved a flying cross body block I attempted. And it'll get me into the ropes and just continue stomping me until I finally reverse. ANd that lovely tag match. I'm getting pinned while Eric Young just stands there staring at space. At one point, I'm fighting outside, he comes over and lays my ass out with a chair while staring at AJ Styles.

Overall, it's a very solid effort. They spent a lot of time polishing the animations and gameplay and it really shows. I don't know what Midway's plans are. But they need to go back with the next version and add a more substantial online along with a larger roster, a more extensive moveset and more features. They're not doing anything with DLC this game other than a couple wrestlers they couldn't make into the final game. It's a great start, just a little barebones with a few rough edges.

Rumble Roses story mode had more depth than TNA.

Thanks for the detailed impressions.

Hopefully I'll get the chance to play the game for myself this upcoming weekend.

Checking in here after spending more time with the game...

For TNA 2, they need to get rid of the unblockable moves. The hip toss, jawbreaker, neckbreaker, clotheslines, etc. etc. It's way to easy to exploit those moves to win against the CPU. Story mode was a cakewalk because of it and it made for some pretty dull gameplay.

Also, the gap between indie difficulty and pro difficulty is too large. There needs to be a difficulty setting in between. Indie is too easy and Pro is ridiculous hard if you don't spam the unblockable moves.

so much potential here but a sequel won't mean shit if they don't actually improve the game the right way.

Online play is where this game is shining for me but even that isn't perfect with the assholes online quitting, using chairs, etc. etc.

I was stuck on the AJ and Tomko fight, like someone posted earlier, but one time when they beat me the game came up with "You've unlocked Hernandez" and another move, and the option came up to continue the story. The cutscene played out as if I'd won. So I don't know what happened there, maybe the Xbox got fed up with me losing.

Then in a follow up cutscene with Kevin Nash on the phone the animation screwed up. The characters were frozen in their starting positions for each camera change. It was weird, like watching some Digital comic book, or a real time story board. Anyone else seen those two glitches?

That last part is actually intended, they use that screenshot looking stuff later on too. I completely thought it was a glitch when it first happened though.

I remember losing a match, getting super pissed, then realizing the match never actually ended due to some odd glitch. It was a tag match, and may have been the tomko/aj one.

Yeah I noticed that in subsequent cutscenes, your character narrates the scene but it's a terrible technique for displaying a cutscene. If they put a filter on it, it wouldn't look so weird, but as it is...

Midway to Release Curry Man and Petey Williams as Downloadable Characters for TNA iMPACT! Next Week

October 31, 2008 - Next week, TNA iMPACT! fans will be able to complete their rosters with the first ever downloadable characters in a wrestling game. Starting November 6th, the Maple Leaf Muscle Petey Williams and the Hot and Spicy Curry Man will be available to download from the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft. Available for just 100 Microsoft points, TNA iMPACT! owners can round out the 27-man roster while finishing the competition with the Canadian Destroyer. As an added bonus, TNA announcer Mike Tenay will also be available to download, free of charge.

Pretty good price, so I'll be getting the DLC since I have 3300 points laying around anyway.

Not worth 100 points unless they actually have different moves from the rest of the roster, in my opinion. Forget paying ANYTHING for a reskin of their generic move-list grapplers.

If the base game had enough variety in it, i'd be there lapping this up. As it is, the moves, CAW, and AI are all dull and under-nourished, and until they fix that, Midway will recieve none of my money.

Despie boredom setting in very quickly with this game, I was holding onto iMPACT! to see what the DLC would be like, and if it would make any radical difference to my experience. As it stands, I have stopped playing, and i'm likely trading in.

I actually feel embarassed and angry at paying launch-prices for this game. It was unfinished, and an insult to a very loyal and loving fanbase (both in TNA, and in wrestling games in general).

Overreacting just a little bit aren't you? We've known for a while that it was going to be a bare bones package. But there's enough content to warrant the price, especially with the improved gameplay. It's so much better than SvR that I'm willing to pay launch prices to support Midway in making a second game, with a more fleshed out roster and other content.

I've thought about this point since well before putting my money down on iMPACT!, and i've come to the realisation that, no, i'm not over-reacting.

I thought the same as you - put the money down, support them for a good second game. You know what? I shouldn't have to support anyone to make a decent game. Not only that, but a pie-in-the-sky game which may never be released. If Midway want the money of Wresling game fans, then they should impress us. They should pull out all the stops, add all the bells and whistles, and make an absoulte blinder. It's not a big ask. In any other genre, a game as bare bones as iMPACT would be shot down and lambasted. In the wrestling genre, all is forgiven because they're at least trying something new. I'm growing really tired of this logic.

Yes, the grappling system is good, and well animated. Everything else is disturbingly basic. That's simply not enough anymore for me to justify a purchase, and I genuinely feel angry at myself for buying into the 'support the dev' mentality, when we got barely anything in return.

Why buy two games, when Midway could have held iMPACT back for a few months and made it into a game worth of comparison to No Mercy?

Midway is an unorganized mess at the moment. They've been working on iMPACT for like three years. They announced I forget how many thousands of motion captures would be done and hardly any were. So I think a lot of iMPACT's shortcomings were based around the ineptitude of the director in managing time and resources.

But I understand where you're coming from. I would love if iMPACT had the animations and overall gameplay combined with the insane amount of features found in other games like No Mercy and even the SvR series. But they probably said hell with it and released the game as it was. And it wasn't too bad. It was a solid venture.

But from Midway's perspective, if this game was hemmoraging money like I think it was, they wanted to get it out the door and gauge people's reactions. If the main complaints were the bare bones nature and lack of variety, it's something that can be easily remedied with a sequel. And if it sells well enough, they could move forward with that. Or, if the gameplay was wretched and people hated it, why bother making a second?

iMPACT was mainly to test the waters. For the most part, it seems as if it did its job.

Man I sure am glad I didnt buy this anywhere near full price. Paid $10 at the Best Buy sale and still feel ripped off. Game started off well enough and actually had me going until you see theres all of 20 moves in the entire game.

Lots of good concepts in the game but bottom line it doesnt feel like a finished product. And those stupid X matches.... jeez.

Why cant we have AKI make modern day wrestling games...
