So this is pretty decent? I just want to make sure, and it's not a 7k raise... it's just a 4k raise over 3 months. 7k in total over 9 months, which is almost a year I've been working my butt off here.

ooook buddy

How the hell am I being a jackass?? If anything, shouldn't GAF be happy for me that another GAFFER is doing well?

...if I am doing well that is... but from the looks of things it is, so ya'll answered my question!

w-wait...wat...WAT?!

You started with a paycheck at X Dollar, and after 9 months, it was increased to X+7000 Dollar? Per month?

WAT?

I'd just be grateful you got a raise at all given the economic situation.

FYI saying you have worked your butt off doesn't mean you are entitled to a raise, hell I know people who have worked 10-12 hours a day only for their pay to be frozen.

And there's a good chance I'll be stuck here for a while since they raised me up so fast over the past 9 months?
What kind of entitlement crap is this.

If you're really so naive that you think the average person might consider a $7,000 raise insufficient during the first year of your employment, then how would you even get this job in the first place?

If he's making shit pay then $7k might just be insufficient.

Give us a range Yaki or prepare for the inevitable thread backfire.

Can we please ban him?

This thread is like posting a picture of Jessica Alba and being like "Should I dump my girlfriend? I think I can do better!"

Since he wont tell us his starting base pay we dont have all the info we need.

Im guessing he didnt start out very high, as he is more than willing to brag about his $7k raise but not mention base pay.

I will speculate:

If you started out at $30k and went to $37k then that is fine because they probably started you out low to see if you fit in/were capable of the work, but in most of these case you should not expect more than the 2%-5% cost of living raise from here on out (barring promotion)

If you went from 150k to 157k, then I hope you die in a car fire

:lol :lol

(Yup it deserves two lol smileys)

lol

pitchfork Gaf assemble.

Man, do you really need confirmation of that 7000 dollars raise in 9 months is good? Or maybe youre soo well off money has no intrinsic value for ya.

Nevertheless, good show on getting a raise, guess they think you deserve it.

buy me a ferrari, specifically a 2001 360 modena....

I see this ending badly. The thread that is. And can he really be that naive that he thinks 7k raise in less than a year is a little? The average salary of a pharmaceutical consultant is 94k-108k a year. A 7k raise is pretty big.

But coming on here and crowing about how you feel ripped off by it and that you are "stuck" in a starting position infuriates me. It is like Ryan Reynolds complaining about marrying Scarlett Johannson and having to fuck her every night. Poor him.

Having said that:

We are not a bitter bunch at all.

Tell them you're out if you don't get at least double that.

Knock over someone's computer for effect.

Trust me, this will work.

No, +7,000k /year (salary)

Try a forum for professionals in your field. You gotta remember that most of NeoGAF lives in their parent's basement and consists on a diet of cheetos and mountain dew. It sounds like you're in a highly competitive field and I'm sure rapid raises are commonplace, just try to find out what other people with your experience and age are making.

Go the George Carlin route:

Tell him you cant start work for a month but must be paid immediately.
Ask them what their policy is on Monday and Friday absenteeisms.
Tell him you can live without the two martini lunch but you MUST have your one joint coffee break.
Tell them you must have a desk right near the front so you can get the fuck out at five oclock in a big, big hurry.

If none of those tactics work, point to the pictures on the bosses desk and ask "Who's the cunt?"

You will have a long career with that company.

So that's about what, an additional $3.36 an hour or so?

To answer your question, it all depends on what the salary range is for your position at direct competitors. If you're at the very low end despite all the raises, I'd just talk with your manager about it and look to what it will take on your end performance wise and what the company needs to achieve financially to get your salary into the proper bracket.

The reason I ask is because the number of raises you've received is very much out of the norm, and screams to me "salary adjustment" to get you in line with the proper bracket.

So don't go asking for an immediate raise, that almost always only happens on a yearly basis, and only if the company is doing well financially. Phrase the questioning as "what can I do going forward," once you've gathered the appropriate data.

Also, a big general :lol to most of the responses in the thread so far. Never change GAF! :lol

This is a well worded and thought out post. And it is also the best advice in the thread. I know my venom and probably many others comes from how the OP presented him/herself and talking about all the money being made. With more specifics I dont think I and many others would be calling for blood, but reacting much like the quote above.

Holy shit, dude! Almost a whole fucking year?!

This is borderline illegal. You're being robbed!

Ultimately, it's about getting proper compensation for what you do. If your salary is on the extreme low side for your position and you're good at your job, any competent manager and HR department will recognize you as a potentially being targeted by competitors who may be able to offer better compensation or even just a flight risk if they know there are better compensating positions out there that may tempt you.

Granted, depending on the job market of your particular industry/field it may not be much of a factor in the short term (i.e. if you're lucky enough to be even working in your field, being underpaid is better than not working at all), but it's always in your best interest to know where you are on the salary range for your position. Tough job market or not, you should at least be aware if you're being screwed, even if it's the best option for you at the moment.

Come on, the OP wasn't asking for help, he was baiting people.

It depends, you were probably hired at entry level at a lower salary than usual. Possibly because you were a risk (recent grad), so they are starting to reimburse you back to what your real earnings should be. After you level off, you'll go to a standard 3% + inflation raise a year or so.

YakiSOBA said:
Let's just keep it really simple:

I started here 9 months ago.

At the 3 month mark, I was given a raise +3k.
At the 6 month mark, I was given permanent status + benefits, no raise.
At the 9 month mark, I was given a raise +4k.

7k in 9 months, is that acceptable? This is my first full-time job after graduating from University! Help me out GAF!

Man FUCK YOU, no really fuck you to hell and back. I get a 45 cent raise for a full year of work at my job doing IT. FUCK. And I haven't had a raise in 2 years thanks to the economy, my boss told me couple of days ago they probably won't start giving raises for another 2 years.

That's also very likely, and something I forgot to add to my post. Good catch!

This isn't a stealth ego thread, this is asking a serious question because I'm totally un-aware if I'm being taken advantage of considering I'm "fresh" out of university to these guys.

Notes: I'm in the pharmaceutical consulting industry, my major was in Biomedical Toxicology.

I'm in high school, I'm too young to even have a job and I know that 7k is a nice raise.

Any more training/certificates available in your specialty? That would be one way to increase your salary and/or increase your chances of landing a higher paying job.
I work at a hospital, we have gotten performance bonuses each year. From 2.6 to 3.4% depending on your evaluation.

that's all stuff they would/should explain when you're hired. so he should be aware of all that.

The fact that we haven't heard yet what the OP made starting out says a lot about what he's really after in this thread. Or at least to tell us what percentage raise the $7k represents so we can figure out his starting salary for ourselves.

exactly - let's just let it die

Your being a bit greedy - then again depends on what job your doing. I got a raise last year...wasn't happy so got regraded and got about 60% more. But in the current climate, I would say you should be happy with what your got. Unless your in banking, in which case you'd never be happy unless you got $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ more.
