My mother is going to take her test in mid march. She is currently studying the 100 test questions of the old citizenship test.(After october 08, all others must take the new one) Could anyone gimme some advice to give her? She barely knows english but pretty much can understand all the questions and can answers them. Is she gonna have to write alot? and Is she gonna get asked anything besides the test's 100 Qs and what her name/address/job is??

when i took it, it was completely verbal except for that one stupid line i had to write. but it was the old test, so i dont know what has changed.

Try not to laugh too hard when they ask you if youve ever planned or are planning to overthrow the US Government.

is it true that you cannot have Three citizenships in the US?

how long can you stay in the US as permanent resident without being citizen?

I got dual Canadian + Portuguese (access to the EU)

No, that isn't true, the US has no stance on multiple citizenship. You can lose your citizenship if you apply in another country that requires you to renounce it though.

U.S. law does not mention dual nationality or require a person to choose one citizenship or another.

Also Permanent is... permanent

It was way too hard not to tick the box saying that I was a Nazi on the immigration forms.

I failed the citizenship test the first time I took it. The question that put me over the edge was as follows:
"What is the primary law of the United States?"

What kind of fucking question is that? What would you answer to this question?

You sure it wasn't 'laws' or body of laws and not law? Because that is a dumb question.

It is embedded in my brain forever because it delayed my citizenship and embarrassed me in front of family and friends. The lady asked it just as I wrote it. Of course, before we even began she had it in for me because she thought I was some sort of draft dodger because I didn't sign up for it 20 years ago.

What is the answer?

A friend says you need to know every US President, is that the case? Sounds really harsh.

I don't think that is true, but when I was in 5th grade they made us memorize every President and the order that they were elected. It wasn't that hard (although I couldn't go past maybe 3 or 4 now :lol )

Last year I'd had my green card for five years so became eligible to apply for full citizenship. Applied late last year and the process has been surprisingly expedient - did my fingerprinting a little ago and today I go back for my english and US civics test. I've been studying up on the questions and I'm not too nervous. I've spoken to others who've been through the process and they said it's pretty easy.

I'm hoping I get the question about "who is the current president/vice president" because that will be a fun one to answer. A week ago it would not have been. Plus last time I was there GWB was the president up on the wall so going back today will be my first time seeing Obama up there instead. Woot!

Anyway, wish me luck and if any others who have already done this have any tips let me know!
I'm gonna be doing this in a few months' time myself.

I once took a practice test for a laugh and it was the easiest test I've ever taken.

However the fact they accepted England (and not the correct answer) as the answer to: 'Who did the revolutionists fight against during the war of indepedence' (or something like that) made me raise an eyebrow.

PASSED 100%!

And yes it is astonishingly easy. They actually just replaced the old test with a tougher one but my application was grandfathered in so they gave me the easy one.

Here are the questions I was asked:

What colors are the stars on the US flag?

Who becomes President if the President should die?

How many US Senators are there?

What special group advises the President?

How long do we elect a member of the House of Representatives?

There are technically ten questions but you only need to get six right and I got the first six right so they didn't bother asking me the others.

I also was required to read the sentence "I want to be a US citizen" and write the sentence "They are a very happy family." Pretty grueling stuff.

Just need to go back at a later date and get sworn in.

Celebrated by eating a Big Mac! :D

Wow..they only asked me 2 questions.

Heres what happens on the day you get sworn in:

Might have to wait outside in a line for a while.
You get seated in an auditorium.
They ask you for your green card.
Give a few speechs, pass out a few pamphlets while they get your papers ready.
They call out nationalities and if you are from that nationality you stand up. They go thru everyone. The cubans were the most dominate during mine.
You swear in.
They give you your certificate and your free to go.

All in all you are looing at about 2-3 hours there.

Congratulations!

Congratulations, Gary. I applaud your decision to become a citizen of this, still the greatest country in the world. I hope your choice is always one which you find rewarding and having been worth the effort.

I plan to collect them like Pokemon throughout my life, and will carry my various passports around in a big red and white ball. And when I produce one at an airport, I will yell "I choose you!".

Congrats Gary! Thank God they gave you the easy test though, could you imagine the hard one?

"How would you phonetically pronounce the name of the country to the north of the United States?"

"Uh... Tre-vor?"

Yeah, it's pretty obvious. I'm still curious as to what KONY answered.

And congrats Whitta, trade your red coat in at any Walmart for a red white and blue jumpsuit.

I am now officially an American! Took the oath today with 1282 other people from 91 different countries. Impossible not to feel somewhat patriotic, even when the DVD playing the post-oath "I'm Proud to be an American" music video stuttered and broke down. U-S-A! U-S-A!

Right, now to exercise my God-given rights and go vote for something really dumb...
