Today is Lord Nomura-sama's Birthday

So belts&zippers turns 40 today.

This kinda.. strikes me odd. I always thought Nomura is the youngest designer in the Japanese industry, but now he's already 40.

Are the people in the Japanese industry somehow rapidly getting old? Where are all the younger stars? :/

In the time since FFXIII was announced (and the directors and producers of that title worked on basically nothing but), he oversaw the release of no fewer than four Kingdom Hearts titles and The World Ends With You, all while still working on Versus.

Well that's not entirely true. Kitase produced Sigma Harmonics after FFXIII was announced, and Toriyama directed Revenant Wings and Blood of Bahamut. It definitely doesn't compare to Nomura's general work load, but they weren't doing NOTHING other than FFXIII!

I can't believe Lulu in FFX had a skirt made of belts.

I hope Nomura was parodying his already belt-laden reputation.

Unfortunately fan art (especially racy fan art) has been derailing a lot of threads lately, regardless of the original intention of the post, so please either use this thread to post fan art or create a new thread specifically for fan art about a certain topic.

Unless those are official art pieces, at which point feel free to continue.

Both are official. They are part of the artbook.

Happy Birthday Nomura!

Why is it that I have a strong feeling that a lot of people in here are laughing at Nomura instead of laughing with Nomura? :lol

Why can't we do both?

I actually thought of this a bit after submitting that post.

I love his art and his designs. I actually like the more plain designs of his like Rinoa or Aya rather than when he goes accessory crazy.

Nomura and Yoshida make some really great looking stuff and I'm glad they do squares stuff now instead of Amano.

Me too, actually. With the sorry state Square is in these days, a real artist like Amano shouldn't dirty his hands by associating with them.

At least we'll always have the logos..

Are you saying Yoshida isn't a real artist? :(

In terms of doing any art outside of video game art? Sorry, he's not. I like his style but he's not on Amano's level. Not even close.
I agree, Amano art is damn gorgeous. You can frame his stuff and can't even tell its video game concept art.

Not sure how VG art isn't "real", but I think I get what you mean.

You know what I'd like to see, I'd like to see Ayami Kojima do art stuff for Square Enix. Throw in Michiru Yamane too for the music.

If it helps illustrate the point, consider them like Stan Lee, Brian Bendis, and Stephen King. Stephen King has done comic book work but he never needed it and never will. Such is the case with Amano.

So, where are the new masterminds of Japanese game industry? Young talents like Masahiro Sakurai and Nomura are already in their 40s so I think it's time to have some new blood.

Not trying to say he's not talented. His monster artwork is really amazing.

I just don't like how he draws people, and so for character designs I much prefer Nomura or Yoshida behind the wheel.

I feel similar. I like Amano's art, just not for video game designs.

Really?

Say what you want, but his character designs are iconic (the same can't be said for a lot of other games both J and W, whose character designs are forgettable and everyone seems to blend in with each other). And his games are pretty good too. Definitely one of the most talented people still at S-E.

Now give us a TWEWY sequel, Nomura-san!

Imo he doesn't provide enough for the people working on the character models, etc. His art is too ethereal for that and due to the limitations of the media the end product usually looks vastly different from what he drew initially, so I find myself enjoying his involvement in animation and other types of illustration works much more. It would be cool to see a game that follows his artwork 100% but it'll probably never happen.

Some of Amanos characters are pretty bad. His men are usually waaaaay too effeminate looking. The concept art for FFIV makes Kingdom Hearts look manly by comparison.

Agree with this fully. What Amano's doing now (covers, extra art, logo design) is probably the best thing he can be doing for video games. I wish someone would take a chance on trying to capture his artwork, but I doubt the outcome would be terribly marketable, so I can see why it hasn't happened.

What's interesting is that Amano has established his own studio and he is currently directing/writing/animating his debut 3D CG animated movie. It's called Zan, and is about a samurai with a robot panther who fights evil in various dimensions. It's going to be very, very interesting to see Amano's own interpretation of his art style into a fully animated 3D form. Who better to do it then himself? If the film turns out well, and it retains his dream-like artform in 3D, I suspect we'll see him doing more substantial work for games in future, if developers see that it can work well in 3D.

Any clue when Zan is gonna be released?

Sometime in 2011. Amano has only shown off the logo of the project and the design of the panther. The design was not shown on paper either, but instead a full life scale model on display at the Tokyo Anime Fair.

Rinoa or Aya.

These are the only two good things to come out of him. And that's because they aren't "LOL BETLS AND ZIPPERS"/out there. They're conservative. They're "modern." They're not skimpy (well, Rinoa could be sorta skimpy).

i honestly have zero interest in ff13 versus since nomura is directing it... its going to be a 5 hr fashion music video... and by fashion i mean emo haircuts and zippers
