Today is the Super Nintendo's 25th anniversary

Damn, a day late.

This was first console and I had great experiences with it. Mario RPG, dkc, super hero games, kirby MP with my sister, playing the pokemon games thru super game boy, it had everything

As an european i have zero nostalgia for the ntsc version of the snes.

(That 60 hz makes me kinda jealous tho)

The pal snes that looks like the famicon with its controller that had colored buttons is hands down my favorite console.

But that purple plastic lunchbox has to be the ugliest console i have ever seen..
(In the same level as virtual boy and jaguar)

Nostalgia i tell you!

One of the best systems with one of the worst US redesigns, right up there with the Turbografx and first Saturn controller.
I love the original SFC and PAL SNES design...

... But let me tell you about the glory of end labels and dust caps. It's really fun to have a cart that just stands up on its own. US carts are best carts.

I truly value the design of the US SNES even if the Japanese/PAL one was superior.

I owe a lot, including my love of gaming, to the Super Nintendo. By far, one of the best systems of all time. Without further to do, here are my ten favorties;

Super Mario World
Final Fantasy VI
Super Metroid
Clock Tower
Kirby Super Star
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Earthbound
Gundam Wing: Endless Duel
Chrono Trigger
Super Castlevania IV

Honorary Mentions to:
Super Mario RPG, Tales of Phantasia, Demon's Crest, Goof Troop, ActRaiser, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose, Star Fox, TMNT IV: Turtles in Time, Mickey Mania

I somehow made this into a top 20. The system is that damn good, people. XD

My previous console was a Master System and I couldn´t understand how some crazy people could like more Mario & Nintendo than Sonic & Sega. Just the first game I played on my SNES, Super Mario World, turned me from a Sega fanboy into a Nintendo addict.

Awesome console with possibly the best gaming library ever. No other console has 3 games that are usually contenders for the GOAT title: Super Mario World, A Link to the Past and Super Metroid. It also gave birth to Super Mario Kart, Star Fox, Killer Instinct, DKC, Yoshi´s Island...

Capcom joined on the fun with some awesome games like Street Fighter 2, Megaman X, UN Squadron, Final Fight, Ghouls´n Ghosts, Demon´s Crest...

Konami was at the top of their game, every release for SNES was absolutely amazing: Super Castlevania IV, Contra III, Parodius, Axelay, Turtles in Time...

It discovered JRPGs to me with Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Illusion of Time, Ilusion of Evermore...

GOAT console.

I agree it's not as good looking as the other regions. But nostalgia is too powerful on this one to care.

North American SNES looks better than Euro SNES/Super Famicom. Super unpopular opinion sure, but it has to be said since the NA SNES gets so much unwarranted hate.

Greatest console of all time. Really hoping this gets a mini version released.

Yep, that would make me very happy as well, especially if it gives me a chance to finally play 60hz versions of some of my favorite games.

Ahhh, the SNES. Despite 50hz blemishes (which I was mostly ignorant of back then still), this is the system I have the fondest and clearest memories of, being in high school at the time and having friends that played games as well still (a luxury I have not had since really...). While I had a Atari 2600 and NES before the SNES and while the Mega Drive was doing its rounds here in Europe at the time as well, the SNES is the first system I distinctly remember wanting to buy with my own money as opposed to asking my parents for it. Since my mom was a quite an action-adventure gamer back then as well, I think we ended up splitting the cost though. The downside is that my mom practically forced me to first sell off my NES and games (all mint in box) to make room mostly, something we both regret to this very day.

Apart from the phenonemal pack-in Super Mario World - i.e. the game that finally made me truly fall in love with the series - F-Zero was the other game that really made me sit up and notice. Shortly after these two I rented most other games and pretty much loved all of them. Super Castlevania IV and Final Fight were standouts for sure. We also bought LttP as soon as we could because of my mom's love for the classic Zelda games. We enjoyed that title for months before finally finishing it. Secret of Mana also became a favorite because of the co-op. I think that was the first game I bought the US version of (this or Zelda LttP) while using one of those converters; I had to thank a specialist game shop (one I ended up working in part-time many years later) for introducing me to that loophole to get games more quickly, or at all in some cases. Games like Super Mario Rpg, Final Fantasy II and III and Chrono Trigger all found their way into my home and heart that way.

For me personally, the game that stood out the most, looking back, was Street Fighter II though. I still remember how I saw it being displayed in a toy shop in the window and immediately resolved myself to get it asap since I had never seen anything as cool and impressive like it in my arcade-less years. Me, my parents and friends all had quite some fun playing it, both head to head as well as in turns against the AI (Capcom, take note please!).

Other standout games were Mega Man X (like SMW with the Mario series, MMX made me finally love the MM series), Actraiser (mindboggling music and blend of genres), Stunt Race FX (played that for hours after buying it cheap late after its release), Rock 'n Roll Racing (another great game to play co-op, and a fantastic OST), TMNT: Tournament Fighters (my second fighting game of choice), TMNT: Turtles in Time (my most frequently rented game), Tetris & Dr. Mario (another favorite of my mom and me due to the mixed mode), Tetris Attack (a game I wish was on the VC right now), Donkey Kong Country (a game I got lost in for months, though I never played the sequels all that much for some reason) and Super Metroid (a game I grew to appreciate more and more as I grew older). I'm skipping over many many more games here of course, which is a testament on its own for how great of a library the SNES had.

What a system, what great games, and what a great time in my life in which they played their part. I still have my original console and games (unlike my NES...), and will never sell it even with its 50hz handicap.

US carts are decent, clearly designed to evoke NES carts.

It's just the console that was changed to such a strange irregular thing with a weird purple motif that looked nothing like the NES. It's not actually the worst looking or anything (it's not any worse than most of the boring-ass boxes of the last two gens), but just an ugly change for dumb reasons. I have to give them credit for the incredibly consistent branding of the cart boxes however.

That said, end labels are good, but PAL/Japan carts stand up on their own fine, and the dust caps were kind of pointless?

Ahhh, such a fantastic machine.

I remember the game magazines hyping the insane power of this console at the time. Trying to tell us in print how amazing mode 7 was going to be. Showing early screen grabs of games like Final Fight, Castlevania, Mario etc that just looked incredible at the time.

This console was a beast.

I miss balls out hardware Nintendo.

I was 13 then, as well. But I didn't actually get a SNES till 93. When Star Fox came out, I used to play it all the time at the demo kiosk at Wal-Mart. I loved it so much I actually bought Star Fox before I got a Super Nintendo. I can't remember if I got it as a birthday present or Christmas present that year.

Last week, I actually got my old systems out because my girlfriends kids really wanted to try out my Sega Genesis and N64. I had not unboxed then nor fired them up in God knows how long. Found out my AC adapter for my SNES went bad, so I had to order a new one. I finally got it fired up this past weekend and tried out a few games. Works like a champ now!

Brought back some good memories.

I knew nothing about the console business at the time and wanted a SNES to play Mario games. My Dad was ready to buy me a console and what do you know? The Nintendo 64 had just released! And that's why I never bought a SNES until a few years ago.

I want a HDMI mod in my SNES. Oh, and an EverDrive that plays Super FX games.

Do they though?

My SFC games fight to fall over even when they're tightly lined up on a shelf.

The dust caps have a point in that they keep dust out but sure .. If you grew up with them you'd probably also have a fetish for them that goes beyond rationality. They look so nice on a cart and it keeps them nice.

There's also a little stripe on the US carts that indicates whether it's first or third party. Red for Nintendo published, purple for other. Maybe that's on Pal carts too, I'm not sure.

The toys r us demo was my introduction to it. I spent allot of time after school in the that store playing mario kart.
