Greatest console of all time. Really hoping this gets a mini version released.
Yep, that would make me very happy as well, especially if it gives me a chance to finally play 60hz versions of some of my favorite games.
Ahhh, the SNES. Despite 50hz blemishes (which I was mostly ignorant of back then still), this is the system I have the fondest and clearest memories of, being in high school at the time and having friends that played games as well still (a luxury I have not had since really...). While I had a Atari 2600 and NES before the SNES and while the Mega Drive was doing its rounds here in Europe at the time as well, the SNES is the first system I distinctly remember wanting to buy with my own money as opposed to asking my parents for it. Since my mom was a quite an action-adventure gamer back then as well, I think we ended up splitting the cost though. The downside is that my mom practically forced me to first sell off my NES and games (all mint in box) to make room mostly, something we both regret to this very day.
Apart from the phenonemal pack-in Super Mario World - i.e. the game that finally made me truly fall in love with the series - F-Zero was the other game that really made me sit up and notice. Shortly after these two I rented most other games and pretty much loved all of them. Super Castlevania IV and Final Fight were standouts for sure. We also bought LttP as soon as we could because of my mom's love for the classic Zelda games. We enjoyed that title for months before finally finishing it. Secret of Mana also became a favorite because of the co-op. I think that was the first game I bought the US version of (this or Zelda LttP) while using one of those converters; I had to thank a specialist game shop (one I ended up working in part-time many years later) for introducing me to that loophole to get games more quickly, or at all in some cases. Games like Super Mario Rpg, Final Fantasy II and III and Chrono Trigger all found their way into my home and heart that way.
For me personally, the game that stood out the most, looking back, was Street Fighter II though. I still remember how I saw it being displayed in a toy shop in the window and immediately resolved myself to get it asap since I had never seen anything as cool and impressive like it in my arcade-less years. Me, my parents and friends all had quite some fun playing it, both head to head as well as in turns against the AI (Capcom, take note please!).
Other standout games were Mega Man X (like SMW with the Mario series, MMX made me finally love the MM series), Actraiser (mindboggling music and blend of genres), Stunt Race FX (played that for hours after buying it cheap late after its release), Rock 'n Roll Racing (another great game to play co-op, and a fantastic OST), TMNT: Tournament Fighters (my second fighting game of choice), TMNT: Turtles in Time (my most frequently rented game), Tetris & Dr. Mario (another favorite of my mom and me due to the mixed mode), Tetris Attack (a game I wish was on the VC right now), Donkey Kong Country (a game I got lost in for months, though I never played the sequels all that much for some reason) and Super Metroid (a game I grew to appreciate more and more as I grew older). I'm skipping over many many more games here of course, which is a testament on its own for how great of a library the SNES had.
What a system, what great games, and what a great time in my life in which they played their part. I still have my original console and games (unlike my NES...), and will never sell it even with its 50hz handicap.
