Tokyo Xanadu releases on September 30th

Just made this one:

I fear that XSEED might want to do Ys 8 first and leave Tokyo Xanadu for later.

"Fear?"

Hope seems like a better word for that sentence, though I am kind of disappointed Ys 8 is still using the Seven/Celceta framework. Hopefully the return of jumping makes for a return to the glory days of Felghana/Origin.

People don't realize that Falcom has always made games that go along with the current anime aesthetic.

Remember when GIANT FUCKING PAULDRONS and Slayers-type fantasy was super popular?

I absolutely adore the company to this day, but it's ridiculous to expect them to somehow stay stuck in the 80s-90s. The fact that Sen sold so damn much after steering to a school setting wasn't an accident. (Also, you can tell they have always wanted to make a school-themed Kiseki. Even back in the early 2000s when they made the first Trails, there was a part of the game where you visit a school.)

Eh, I still think 80s-90s fantasy anime aesthetic is best for RPGs / Action RPGs.

So what are these games like then? Full JRPGs with towns to explore and stuff? Or more narrow than that? Decent stories?

Will it have a disc release or is it digital only?

It seems to be more in the vein of Ys now, but the last Xanadu was a really cool Metroid/Diablo mix with a home town and unlockable shortcuts and dungeons and awesome bosses.

Falcom said there was a very good reason this is a "Xanadu" entry, so we'll see.

I did my own analysis from what I could glean. I'll try to get a 'concrete' translation as soon as I can. The three main characters shown in these shots are Kou, Asuka and Sora - Kou and Asuka are both 17, and Sora is 15.

Kou: Kou's parents are out of country for work so he lives by himself. He's somewhat of a loner as he hasn't joined any clubs, and he's the kind of person who dives in to help people without thinking ahead.

Asuka: Class president, came back from America. At night, she works for a secret organization.

Sora: Kou is her upperclassman, and she's a martial arts genius.

The battle system works like this:

Your basic attack is done by pressing Circle. Each character has a special weapon called a "Soul Device". As you can see in the second picture, they draw these weapons out of these phones, in the third picture.

On the left is the 'wide attack range' weapon, which is slower, but hits a lot more enemies at once. This is the main male character, Kou's, weapon - a chain with blades on it.

The middle weapon is a one handed sword. It's a lot faster, but has a narrower range. This is the main female character, Asuka's, weapon - a rapier-like light sword.

The right is a set of gloves that go on both hands. It's even faster than the sword, but has a really short range, even allowing you to do combos with kicks in them. This is Sora's weapon.

There are 'skills' that consume an SP gauge, as well. This is also divided into three types: a stabbing blast that comes out of the end of a sword, magic projectiles, and energy beams that shoot out of Sora's fist after her weapon stores enough energy. When you do this over and over, energy comes out of both of her fists.

After jumping you can also press square to do Dash Attack skills. It's really effective against particular types of encounters. You can use these dash attacks to move in a straight line really really fast, too, so if you really have to get out of a bad situation you can use it. Also, you can add a ton of damage to your combos if you use dash attacks in tandem with your regular on the ground attacks.

Left is a flying skill which uses the weapon kind of like a hookshot to charge right into the enemy. It's called 'Anchor Slide'.

Middle is a stabbing skill that goes in a straight line right towards the enemy. This one's called Blizzard Pierce.

Right is Tensho Ashi. Similar name to Chun-Li's special move from Street Fighter. With this move, Sora jumps up and does a really sharp kick that cuts through air.

If you press square for longer, you can get a really powerful skill. However, it has drawbacks, as the recovery's pretty slow.

The whirlwind attack has a longer reach and hits things behind you, too. It has a really long windup time, though.

The crystal special seen in the middle does multihit damage. It's an overhead attack, so Asuka has to swing her sword upwards and then down for this.

The right is a punch that does huge damage after buildup.

You can even do this square-holding special attack mid-air, as seen here.

Credits also go to some of my friends who helped me with some of the information.

EDIT:

Ahahahaha well shit, Gematsu already did this shit for me, and way better.

Oh well. Now you can laugh at my incompetence.

Glad it got a date and to be able to see a little new details about it. End of September is a good time for me for this game to come out.

Hopefully we'll get both that and the new Ys from them next year.

Amen to that !

Well everything's releasing in 2016, but then again most PS4 owners wouldn't give a crap about it outside Japan :V

True but not all of them , I have a PS4 and I'm not living in Japan :)

XSEED is releasing a lot of stuff from Falcom now so I'm not worried, it might take time but we will see these games in English.

Made some GIFs of the gameplay footage:

Nice like the quality of the one you made here! Though its weird how it looks worse when quoted. D:

Bout the frame rate its still too early to tell as nothing in there even looks like it would cause the system to chug.

I definitely want to Xanadu!
That gameplay looks great, hopefully we'll see it in English one day. Is there much chance for simultaneous release? I guess the earliest we might see US/EU release is 2016..

Looks exactly like Sen no Kiseki, which is obviously why we're getting a new title so quickly after Sen II. Falcom is a machine. It seems like the low budget, decent profit at 200k model is a good fit for the transforming (disappearing?) industry.
