Tom Cruise is amazing in Collateral

Good LORD I loved this movie as a young teen. I couldn't believe how well it stood up (unlike a lot of movies I liked as a young teen) when I watched it again recently. Cruise is absolutely menacing while super calm and cool at the same time. Great movie.

That's exactly why Keaton- Batman is more frightening than Bale-Batman: He is calm.

Cruise really should have won the award. And I love Denzel Washington

The MCU villain problem has little to do with the actors. It's their children-orientated cookie cutter formula that's screwing that up.

MCU's Villain Problem stems from two things A.) Doom and Magneto are tied up at Fox, and B.) the Fanboys are unwilling to accept reinterpretations of A or B tier Villains. They tried that once with the Mandarin and well... you know the rest.

Never really saw him as a villain in that movie, and the movie as a whole wasn't great, though it had greatness in it. But it was probably the last interesting thing he did as an actor. Not Michael Mann's best...

Can someone explain or link me to Michael Mann's explanation of the ending. I love this movie but I really dislike the ending.

Cruise is awesome in this movie. The acting, cinematography and sound mixing in this movie is also incredible.

What do you not like about it?

Vincent was ultimately unable to adapt, unable to play jazz, unable to improvise the way he'd been telling Max to do the whole time. While Max went outside of his tendencies to rescue Annie and literally take shots in the dark, Vincent underestimated Max, fell back to his rules going for the double tap + headshot and got blocked by the train doors. So he dies alone on the train in a disconnected city where nobody will notice for hours, just like the story he told early in the movie.

It's funny that you bring up this movie, OP. I just watched it for the first time maybe two nights ago. Right after watching the movie Night Crawler. Tom Cruise was great in it, though I don't think I would call Collateral my favorite Michael Mann movie, but it was still quite solid.

Damn I didn't even think of it before, but I could definitely imagine Vincent in the the world of John Wick! If I recall its never revealed who Vincent works for.

John Wick is more of a comic book version of a hitman.. Collateral and John Wick movie would not mix well at all...

Vincent killed Wick's puppy. Now Vincent vs Wick would be an epic battle with Vincent naturally kicking Wick's ass.

Yeah, it'd be one of those epics that starts off all classy moves, dodges, rolls and slick shit and finishes with them barely able to throw a punch

Cruise was great in that role and that was my favorite scene as well. That one robber always reminded me of Leonardo DiCaprio...

Again with that fucking scene. He took out two meth junkies and the only reason why one of them didn't kill him is because he was a fucking meth junkie who got his gun stuck in his pants. Yes, the guy rocks in the movie but that scene is just stupid.

The club scene is way better.

Pretty sure he talks about it in the commentary track on the dvd/blu ray.

This is one of my favorite movies. Saw it in the theaters back when it came out. One of the best Michael Mann movies.

What did you dislike about the ending? It felt like it ended in just about the only way it could end -- In terms of what happens to the characters. In terms of tropes, I do tire of the gun chase at the end of a thriller. Training Day was hurt by that too.

Tom Cruise is THE quintessential movie star. I can't think of any actor with the same, consistently iconic breadth of work. Dude just has way too many good movies to his name, and they're so varied as well.

Tom Cruise is the man.

I agree, I was just putting up the "yo homie" scene, I had to.

The club scene is even more stupid given that his target just sits on his ass with no one taking him to a safe room.

Tom Cruise is wasted potential. He got so much more charisma and presence playing bad guys (Interview with vampire, Collateral).

forreal. he's a great hero but when i look at all his best performances NONE of them were playing the straight man. he's best as a flawed or just straight up cold person.

if i'd rank his performances for me:

1. Interview with the vampire
2. Born on the fourth of July
3. Collateral
4. Vanilla Sky
5. Tropic Thunder (lmao)

a damn shame all he does is the squeaky clean lead now.

Edit: oh damn forgot magnolia, would prolly replace vanilla sky with that. Yet another role where he's a bit off. Hero cruise is boring, not one performance matches up to these

You forgot Rainman where he plays a douche most of the time.
