Hey when the industry wants to push a game hard, they will.

Too bad it's one of such stupidity and lack of originality.

A little hypocritical of you. You came into a thread where we're just discussing the feminist outcry about the game, and you start off my calling the game stupid and lacking in originality...then you're surprised that people turn on you?

Seriously man. You need to learn how to read a situation and act accordingly.

Personally I think the so-called "feminist" outcry is hilarious. To me, they're overly-sensitive critics quick to dismiss anything that remotely touches a nerve (THEIR nerve, to be exact). But the homophobic, fat insults being left on the page as well as her inbox make the game makers and the gamers who support this game look bad, which is exactly what the writer at Shakesville WANTS. No good.

No I don't own a Wii: Motion control is a joke. I own a 360, an NES, and a Dreamcast, I also game on OSX (mostly Blizzard titles)

Oh wow... :lol

lol!

His show is hilarious cause his callers are dumb since they treat his stuff like the gospel. But if you were serious, you deserve a drubbing!

The guy is the best salesperson on the air.

I didnt even know Lykis was still on the air. He got booted off the local market for being REALLY offensive. Really pushing the bounds of good taste.

man this topic keeps delivering, even compared to that author's webcomic (which reads like the understudy artist personal comics in the back of a manga, and I can only hope that's intentional)

are you trying to say that her use of hetero-normative was correct? If so go on.

It's a complicated topic, and whenever you talk about *-sexuality extending beyond sex you're going to attract some disbelief, but let's take a look at the at Wikipedia definition of "heternormativity":

The term heteronormativity describes the marginalization of non-heterosexuals and variations from a heterosexual orientation, or the assumption that heterosexuality can be the only normal sexual orientation. Instances may include the idea that human beings fall into two distinct and complementary categories: male and female; that sexual and marital relations are normal only when between people of different sexes; and that each sex has certain natural roles in life. Thus physical sex, gender identity, and gender roles should in any given person align to either all-male or all-female cultural norms.

Now, I don't really agree with most of what you get when you bring in (technically pseudo-)words like "hetero-normative". I'm likely to not see eye-to-eye with anyone who uses the word. But under the (rather worryingly) flexible definition that the people who use it tend to give it, "hetero-normative" can indeed apply to a game where the role of the male is to save the female who is helpless. In most of what I've read, heteronormativity tends to be much less about sex and more about sexual politics and gender roles.

We may not agree with the concepts behind the specific use of the word, but I'm pretty damn sure it's been used correctly. I probably shouldn't have singled you out, but I find pretty much everything about the reactions to the game (and the reactions to the reactions to the game) amusing.

also, why the hyphen I even did it after reading her blog.

Well, that's what happens when a word isn't exactly a word (I'm fairly sure you won't find it an any dictionary)...

my point was her initial response was aimed at the princess being fat and how fat women are deemed less desirable by society and while on that tangent she used the word. Fat has nothing to do with sexuality unless you want to be a crazy feminist about it.Plenty of princesses have been saved by male heroes in video game history as well as film and literature. She did not say mario games or zelda games are heteronoramtive, or is a thin woman being saved not heteronormative. By making a fuss about this particular game and not pointing out zelda or mario, she herself is to blame for thinking some gender roles are ok but others are not.

either way: day one.

Why so serious?

hes fat

I dont see what the problem is with the title...its descriptive, the princess is fat...how is fat an insulting word? Its descriptive, if you are fat, you're fat...its a descriptive word....being so defensive about it suggests you have a problem with it...if you have a problem with it, lose it...or at least try to

Not exactly trying to give her the benefit of the doubt, but there's a considerable difference between modern Mario and Zelda games and their original save-the-princess iterations.

I wasn't going to get this game but I will throw my money at it just to piss some people off. My hat is off to these developers - they are bravely flying in the face of the leftist, fascist, PC police.

it could be seen as, faggot prince, where the opposing teams prince is trying to make love to your soldiers. Calling it homosexual prince isnt going to make it better. I'm sorry for the poor analogy. And I don't think that fat people should be consider minorities like other race/gender/sexual orientation groups.

I don't think that was their initial intention. Some people just like to scream and yell at anything. The woman said the ps2 sucked, WTF?! Her opinion should obviously be discarded

this is pretty much the only thing that makes sense.

The story in video games is usually just a thin excuse to wreck people's shit anyway. I don't think the developers of Fat Princess are pushing any kind of agenda on anyone. So seeing the word used that way in the that original article comes off as pretentious and pseudo-intellectual, even if it can be applied to gender roles.

what are you talking about in the latest mario the whole point just like all the others was to save the princess.

Jesus, more people are against this now too? It's a humorous game with the hook that's in many cartoons, movies, tv shows. Weight. And she's skinny at first, then you stuff huge pieces of cake down her throat to make her heavier, thus harder to move. It's big chunks of cake. But these people are making this game sound so evil and serious as if you're face fucking her full of semen.

I hope they change the title to Phat Princess instead, make it allll better.

Is there confirmation of that? Or is that just assumed because of the comic where she assumes her WoW persona? I understand how that conclusion can be made, but if she's just acting out her WoW character on her own comic, then that's not crossing the line.

When she has a picture of her tauren hermaphrodite-self doing a rabbit on commission, then she's a furry.

I'm pretty sure most of the people getting upset with this were predisposed to hating the "heternormative" videogame industry to begin with. Which isn't to say they're wrong, just that it's extremely silly (some might say 'fucking stupid') of them to target their outrage at a game whose tone and intent has completely flown over their heads, rather than the very real (and pretty blatant to anyone paying attention past a surface level) sexism and "heteronormativity" present in (high-profile, big budget, money making, lol) videogames.

Listening to this now. Tom sounds way different than he did 6 years ago.

Yea, he's as entertaining as I remember him after meeting him in So Cal.

"But the fact is, games have a wider audience now, and companies need to think through things like “Fat Princess” before they unleash it on the world. That doesn’t mean censor it, that doesn’t mean change the name, even. It just means that video games are getting a lot more scrutiny nowadays because more newbies have joined the gamer ranks. Three years ago, it would have been possible for a game like “Fat Princess” to fly below the radar. Not anymore."

It just means that... What exactly? Ah yes, nothing. This article has no conclusion. Awesome.

SONY. DO YOU HEAR THE NATIONAL MEDIA? BE SURE TO THINK ABOUT YOUR GAME NEXT TIME! DONE THINKING? OK, GO AHEAD AND RELEASE IT NOW. BUT IT WON'T FLY UNDER THE RADAR!!!1
