Tomb Raider: Legend or Anniversary?

Anniversary. The last good TR game.
No cinematic bullshit. Just puzzles and climbing.

Seriously, classic tomb raider needs a spiritual sucessor.

A thousand times this.

The new Tomb Raider games are not Tomb Raider games at all.

I dream of a TR based on puzzles and exploration, that doesn't guide you through the level with obvious markers, that has non-linear paths, lots of real life tools for climbing and traversing, massive levels and that sense of isolation and discovery...

RIP this feeling

They're both good, but Anniversary is better. It's a shame they never made a remake of TR2, because I liked that one as well.

Both titles are on sale on PSN (US) for 4.99. PSP versions.

My question is simple, what do you prefer and why?
What about in terms of replay value?

Far as PSP goes, get Ann. It can be played on Vita by transferring from PS3 to Vita.
Also get Legacy of Kain which is playable on Vita using the above method as well.

Anniversary is pure gaming bliss; it's the best Tomb Raider game there is. Legend is built on the same basic framework (or, more accurately, Anniversary is built on Legend's), but it was made in the early days of QTEs and it really shows its age these days.

Underworld is also excellent, though I don't know if that one's available on PSP. In fact, I have no idea if the PSP versions are at all like the console/PC versions I played, for that matter.

Anniversary only because it's based on a great game.Crystal Dynamics managed to ruin it though (bad camera, bad level design compared to the original, pointless slow-mo gimmicks, corny dialogue/story) but even then it's still better than the turd that was Legend.

Legend is a dumbed down piece of crap with terrible puzzles, super basic no thought required platforming, quick time events galore, and a huge focus on shooting above anytbing else. You even have characters talking to you constantly through your earpiece which is both annoying and kills any sense of isolation. You know that it's not a Tomb Raider game thing you hear a lot bout the reboot? Legend was the pioneer for that, and I'd argue that the reboot is way closer to a proper Tomb Raider game than Legend.

Anniversary did a fantastic job of recovering from tge disaster that was Legend. Excellent level design, way more challenging, well designed platforming and puzzles and much less of an emphasis on action. Atmosphere was great. It was less dumbed down in general. It was a fantastic game and certainly the best post PS1 Tomb Raider game. There are certain things that are disappointing about it with regards to comparisons to how things played out in the original, but for tbe most part it's a great remake that is respectful of the original but also quite different. I think it's a must play.

Oh and I own Anniversary on PS2 as well as PSP. The PSP version is great.

I hated Legend but helllllllll no at this.

No way. TR 2013 is a cinematic third-person shooter. Legend has some of that, certainly, but also has true, room-filling puzzles and long sections of quiet exploration.

The reboot had way better atmosphere. You were alone for large parts of the game without people in your ear. The puzzles are waaaaay better even if they were all optional. They weren't great but they were much better than Legend. There was way more room for exploration too with tge bigger environments. I'm sorry but you're gonna have to back up how the reboot is any less TR than Legend. Legend had shit puzzles, automated platforming, super aimple game design, quick time events, cinematic presentation and a huge focus on action. The only difference with the reboot is that the reboot did its action way better resulting in a more fun game.

Legend is a cinematic third person shooter too. It just does the shooting part way worse, but it's absolutely as much of a focus as it is in the reboot. As is the terrible overly dramatic story. The room filling puzzles in Legend were garbage and made the side tombs in the reboot look like masterpieces. The reboot had sections of quiet exploration too and unlike Legend it was actually quiet. Plus the environments were way bigger and had more room for optional exploration. You could waste hours just exploring in tbe reboot without even progressing through the story, which is exactly what I did. I cant say the same for Legend.

The Reboot had all that too.

Both games are terrible as Tomb Raider games.

Yeah but I would say gameplay is the more important factor when making the comparison.

Legend was like a TR game, dumbed down and on rails. THe reboot just isn't a TR game at all.

I hate both tbh. The reboot may be an ok game but it should have been a new IP so a real Tomb Raider game within 10 years would be possible.

It's kinda weird that not even the indies have stepped in to fill that hole though.

Wow I think we must have played different games.. Legend was too linear and too shooty and cinematic but nowhere near 2013 levels. Puzzles on the other hand were pretty great, some of them had harder alternate solutions that yielded hidden relics, plus getting all the secrets in the levels was satisfying. Of course, Anniversary is better in most areas.

I just wish we could have TR games like either of them now.

Lets not go crazy here. Legend got a lot of flack for being like 40% combat and action setpices, the reboot is literally 95% that. At least Legend has some dedicated areas to puzzles and platforming, as well as using the new grappling gadget in some interesting ways in the puzzles.

The reboot is barely a Tomb Raider game at all. It's a straight cover based third person shooter the entire way.

The bad stuff like the QTEs is such a tiny part of the game though, it doesn't drag it down much. On the level design I'll disagree with you, it doesn't deserve to be called bad at all. Show me another remake that so faithfully preserves the original while at the same time modernising it. CD did a great job.

Yeah, it's not more of a TR game. I still like it more than Legend though. It's not the game I want it to be, but it's well made for what it's trying to be. I got a lot of enjoyment just out of the presentation, they did a pretty fantastic job with Lara in that game.

Ha ha at 2013 being more TR than Legend, but that said I agree that 2013 is a more well made game despite some annoyances in regards to well being a TR game (those side tombs are such damn teases). The presentation is really top notch indeed. I just getting a bit bleh at all the shootouts that are thrown at you more and more as the story makes progress, and Legend sure as hell didn't have as much as this.
