Tommy Morrison, AKA Tommy Gunn from Rocky V, has passed away at 11:50 PM on September 1st. The cause of death was respiratory and metabolic acidosis and multiple organ failure. He was 44, our thoughts go out to his friends and families. We also encourage you guys to check out his fights, as he was a real life boxer and a great one too.

I just looked him up a couple days ago.
:(

A great boxer and former world champion who let his personal demons ruin his career. RIP.

He had a truly great left-hook (regarded by many as one of the best of all time)
He had power but no defense and minimal athleticism. He was pretty much obliterated in the ring by the top heavyweight fighters of his day. I've never heard him mentioned as a great at anything.

The man went 49-3, he was clearly great at some aspect of this. RIP.

Rocky V doesn't exist, so I have no idea what anyone here is talking about?!

...On a serious note though, he was a pretty good actor in that movie as far as his role was concerned.

Seriously though, sucks that he was fairly young as well! So was there any clear answers on his health. All of it seems pretty waivering not concrete results or testimonies???

They should make a story about this guy's life. Such an interesting character. From having a decent boxing career, co-starring in a Rocky movie opposite Sly, getting HIV, denying it, getting peck implants, still having unsanctioned boxing bouts.. I remember reading an interview with him where it said he had sores all over his skin and he was still fervently denying he had anything and said there was a conspiracy against him.

R.I.P. Tommy Morrison. I was watching Rocky V on TCM just yesterday in the UK, it may be my least favourite of the Rocky films but the street fight at the end is still excellent.

ESPN had just done a story on him a couple of weeks ago, he seemed to have been in the hospital for a while.

He's had problems. HIV, denials thereof, family squabbles. It's interesting and sad at the same time.

Rest in peace.

Everyone should read that article. Wow. Heartbreaking stuff, but it paints a more defined image of the man -- his early celebrity and skill, his fall from grace, and ultimately what the themes and takeaways from his life may be.

Still lots of unanswered questions, though, as I'm sure there probably always will be. What an enigma...

I didn't mean it that way, but I just don't see him as a great boxer. He was a marketable white heavyweight with good power.

Well we, as a society, always speak as if we're fit to judge the masters. I do it too. Truth is, he probably was a great boxer. We're just too good at reductionist relativism.

Sad to see him go so off the rails, I'll always root for the B and C grade fighters that fought frequently on free tv in my youth. Rip.

That said, he wasn't even close to a "great" fighter. C'mon now.

I was more basing it on the beatings he took when he faced the top competition. Certainly great in the grand scheme of things though. He could definitely beat me up.
