Tony Hawk: Proving Ground impressions if anyone cares.

Flip goals are still stupid and insane.
Speed is too quick.
It´s still skate on steroids, not very credible not playable.
Goals are stupid and sometimes boring.
Aggro things are stupid.
No broken bones or shot-your-skater-and-broke-all-bones modes (not yet but I don´t think they bring it from TH8)

Meh, who i´m kidding, i´m still buying this shit but well, not gonna give it too much time compared to skate!. TH series need a facelift and it needs it NOW.

skate. excels at street skating; stair sets, grind rails and the like, so a city makes sense. Tony Hawks is way too fast for any of that to be satisfying and relies on Vert skating; trying to shoe-horn that into a city is kind of weird.

I've been a big TH fan from 2 though 8, and I cannot decide whether to get this or not.
Huh? Vert skating has never been all that practical in the TH series, aside from specific goals. It's always been about grinding out huge lines. Through most of the series, you couldn't even get a decent score with vert skating. I've only been able to do well there in Project 8 myself, though I admit I didn't even try in AW.

I'm passing on Proving Ground just because it feels so unrefined and mashed together. I'm hoping it'll be smoothed out and fun for the next game.

I thought the opposite; IMO, gameplay is Tony Hawk at it's prime. Everything about the game is grittier and more refined than the games before. I'm really enjoying it. I am disappointed at the lack the token hottie, though... Private Carrera? Daisy? Hot chicks skate too.

As far as the Skate vs. Tony Hawk comparisons, be sure to compare Burnout to Forza after you're done. My Tony Hawk games reside peacefully beside my copy of Skate. Two different games, two different experiences.

Is it just me, or does hitting a half pipe after a few aggro-kicks reminds me of dunking from the 3-point line in the original NBA Jam games...

Wow someone who shares my opinion. I believe it's the best Tony Hawk game by far, tons of content, great level design, tons of crap to do. Being able to permanently mod the world you skate in. Plus it's balls to the wall fun.

Like you said as well, anyone who compares Tony Hawk to Skate should compare other arcade-ish titles to their sim counterparts.

I was messing around with the game last night, and in the controller options menu, there's a "Sim Mode". I didn't get much time with it, but you only jump, maybe a third as high, and you HUD is gone; all grinds and manuals have to be managed with no on-screen assistance... This mode ratchets the game's difficulty up 500%...

I'd like to know this as well.

TH 1-7, particularly 5-7 were extremely easy, even on the hardest difficulty settings.

The sick goals in 8 weren't "impsossible," but they were much, much harder than they ever should have been. whoever thought having that many goals that were that difficult was a good idea must have been sadistic.

*edit: thanks SamBishop. I'm really interested in hearing more of your impression on the game. make sure to post your impressions and/or post a link. :)
Oh thank god. I thought I was REALLY bad at THP8 when I really struggled to get the sick goals.

Presentation
The once-fresh overall style has gotten a little old. The story elements are presented better now that they're broken out, but none of them are all that interesting.
7.5 Graphics
Character models are well defined, but can look a little freaky at times. The city is quite solid, but nothing will wow you.
7.5 Sound
The soundtrack is good, though it seems to have strayed from its hardcore skating roots a fair bit and doesn't seem as natural.
7.0 Gameplay
The controls are tight and the basics can still be fun, but we've done all of this before. Many times.
7.0 Lasting Appeal
There are plenty of things to do, and getting all of the Sick goals will require plenty of practice. Online extends the length, but it's not much different than past offerings.
7.1 OVERALL

I was really diggin this game until I started working on the "rigger" lifestyle. It basically emphasizes the worst of the previous Tony Hawk games, getting off your board. The more I played that part of the career the more disappointed I got with the game.
