Too cheap for the iphone? How about a web/data plan for $30/month?

Man, this is a great deal.

Verizon Wireless is performing ULTIMATE rape on its subscribers, then. It's $45 extra a month for "unlimited (up to 5GB)" data for PDA or smartphones - and that's on top of whatever you have to pay for your messaging package.

Fun fact: Verizon doesn't charge data for picture messages anymore. However, if you had a PDA or smartphone and just wanted to receive picture messages under your data charge-free messaging plan, but either didn't have a separate data plan or put a data block on, you can't get the picture messages anymore. AWESOME
this is why im nixing VZW on november 25th. had them since 2002 and will call them asking for a killer deal. when they say they cant, ill switch. gg VZW.

Can anyone vouch for how Sprint's service is in the Houston area? I'll be needing a new phone and plan soon...

I just stumbled across this old thread, can anyone tell me if this worked for them or not/

Yes it works. $30/month + tax
500 mins, unlimited night mins starting at 7pm, unlimited nights/weekends, mobile to mobile, unlimited picture mail, unlimited high-speed internet/web data (EVDO).

I've had this since January 2006, except back then the free phone I got with the plan could not do EVDO and nights started at 9pm. Otherwise, excellent as always with the Moto Q. I got my gf and a coworker on the plan and it works for them as well.

You forgot unlimited text :p

The SERO plan doesn't officially come with unlimited text messaging. That's free stuff that a rep may tack on and will probably only last a year before Sprint starts charging you for it. I have 500 free texts/month myself.

Worked for me.. couldnt get them to honor the SAVE50 coupon though sadly. Thanks again for the heads-up Konex! :D

I love seeing all my data out of (Unlimited) and texts out of (Unlimited). Pretty fucking sweet. :D

Who says it's over...

ps: The plan I have has unlimited text listed as a feature. It's not a throw-in
There is a new promotion for it, it expires at the end of September, but if you sign-up with it, it's free forever.

And this plan is SUCH a good deal, I might just switch from Verizon, and just pay $10 a month to them until my contract is up.

Can someone explain the unlimited text messaging? When I was filling out the deal, there was still an option to upgrade the account to get the feature.

Is the "unlimited texting" straightforward (As in you can send/receive an unlimited amount of text messages at no extra cost) or is there something else to it?

too bad you have to use a Q though. Honestly it's the worst phone I've ever used. See if you can get a blackberry instead, might make the deal worthwhile.

You can get a blackberry with the deal but it's $150 instead of $100..

It's free. There's no catch...

you'd be stupid not to. Go with the Q if you want, but when it's dropping calls, crashing randomly, refusing to turn on, taking 7-10 seconds from the point in time you click "call" to the point the connection is made, or dropping out of the call interface in the middle of a call so you can't hang up don't say I didn't warn you.

I've had the Q for a month and haven't had any such problems. Maybe you had a bad one :p

Bad 2 actually. My first one died because the battery contacts became separated and gently setting the phone down on the table resulted in it losing power and cutting off.

It's simply a poorly engineered device. I had a honeymoon period with mine for about 4 months or so before the flaws really got to me. In reality, it functioned much better with the original firmware, but it didn't support push e-mail so the battery life was horrible. I still think battery life is bad, but at least with push e-mail it can hold a charge all day. I firmly believe if I had come from another dataphone I would have returned the Q right away. I was just too excited by all the newness of it to really get how poorly it functioned.

Edit: FWIW, I was one of 3 people I know to get the Q at release. I am the last one remaining with it, mostly because I'm too cheap to fork out for a new full-price phone. But I'm going to bit the bullet and get a blackberrry world edition soon, as it is getting rave reviews from everyone I know.

Perhaps it would be easier if I didn't activate the phone at all. I wanted a Blackberry but I thought the Q would be a suitable entry-level smartphone based on the CNET review (Which I'm pissed about...they mentioned none of this shit and it seems to be common for the Q now that I've done further research). Perhaps they would let me return the phone, pay the difference, and get the Blackberry 8830 instead.

The Q has been out for a while now. Maybe the initial machines had problems but like I said mine has been great so far. I wouldn't worry too much..

I'm just a pessimist. The Sprint Q has been rated very well...I'm going to give it a week of service before I take any action. Mine will be here tomorrow.

Since I've heard these conflicting reviews, I'm going to be utilizing every feature that I can think of. I'll write a performance summary for anyone that might be interested in the deal as it's supposed to continue into September.

I'll say this, though. The standard battery life sucks if you browse the internet a lot like me (I surf/IM more than I talk LOL). The cool thing is that you can charge it via USB so that helps if you're at school/work.

I am going to get the extended life battery eventually but I've been getting by with USB charging when I'm not home..

Okay, Sprint's site is the biggest piece of garbage in the world. Been trying to pay my bill online (or at least set it up), and I get stick in a universal loop of logging in and being redirected to various sites. Pissing me the fuck off...

I've been playing with the Q all day.

I still haven't used it enough to write a thorough review but my general impression is very favorable.

The phone is very streamlined, the voice quality in calls is good, and the email synchronization works very well. This thing does run through the battery rather quickly if you're constantly operating Windows.

Speaking of which, WM5 is a bit clunky but performs very smoothly on the phone. The whole device works very well.

It took a while for my first bill to show up. Can you even see yours yet?

I can't even see it.. every time I try and look at it, I get re-directed/logged out. I dont think I got a paper one yet.. I know the phone itself and the $150 deposit fee though charged directly to my CC, so if I do owe something, it's just the first month's service..

Wow, I just placed my order, I kind of can't believe how good this deal is. I don't necessarily need a pda phone, but the price is so dirt cheap, I can't resist. Here's hoping I don't hit any road blocks.

Welp, I signed up for the $30/month plan and the Motorola Q. Everything seemed exactly as the guide said at checkout. My initial payment total is only like $100 and then the flat monthly rate after that. If you sign up before the end of next month they're also waiving the $10/monthly fee for unlimited text. 500 minutes, unlimited data, unlimited text for 30 bucks a month. That's crazy...

I got the Q9M the day before its store official release. I got a fuck of a deal. We went to circuit city, the guy working goes "what are you going to do with your old phone?" i was like WTF its a sprint phone and he goes "my girlfriend has sprint and she flushed her phone, here's a deal I can give you for your fusic" He gave us 20% off our total bill until 2039, he gave me the Q9M for $95 and my wife payed $75 for her new Blue Chocolate. We had to get the 2 year service but who cares fuck of a deal.

motoq9m.jpg

I love it by the way. I got the wireless card for it so its wifi baby! No online plan because most everywhere I go has wifi. Also I put about 30 NES roms on there (my whole at home collection) AND you can make your own mp3 ringtones amazing quality with soundforge in about 30 seconds..

I say hell of a deal!

I'm responding with the Q and $30 deal riht now and its great! However I have to say that the Q is underwhelming Windows mobile is way lame and don't let me get started on explorer. I should have done my research because I didn't know that there isn't any flash support and the internets look wonky. If anyone has any links to a better browsing solution and good aps for this thing please post them. I'm getting ready to tweak this thing and see about applying the iphone skin.

btw,

with the sero plan, you can't get a instant rebate when you upgrade your phone.

and by opting not to get Sero, I get 2 discounts for 15% and 10% off every month

So how much are you paying monthly now?

Ok, I am a total newb who was considering going wireless for the first time, so I have a couple of questions regarding this plan.

1. Can you use any phone with this plan? (SIM card?)
2. What sort of connection speeds does it have for data, I couldn't work that out.

Thanks in advance for any answers. :)

I don't think Sprint phones use SIM cards. Since they don't, they provide a "wireless backup" option to keep your phonebook stuff saved on their server for like $5 a month.

I've never used a blackberry before so can someone explain to me what the BlackBerry Email and Web plan is? I can get a palm or smartphone and get web access + 500 mins for $30 but if i use a blackberry i have to pay $40 more?

I ended up canceling because the more I read about the Q, the more underwhelming it sounded. Sprint's pricing is amazing, but I really want the Blackberry Curve, so I'm just going to stick with T-Mobile and wait till they release it on the 24th.

I thought I should come back and post my final impressions of the Motorola Q:

The honeymoon is certainly over and the complaints that I've read about the phone were absolutely true. It worked fairly well for about a day (Aside from the battery life; that was atrocious right from the start).

It's hard to know where to start to list the complaints...

I'll simply start with the basics. The call quality was excellent...while the phone held your connection. Unfortunately, the phone is about as reliable as a first-generation Kia out of the 80's. This thing drops calls like you wouldn't believe (Even if the phone is showing a strong signal...it doesn't matter one way or the other).

The text/email functionality works fine with the exception of the way you input the messages themselves. The QWERTY keyboard on the phone is really low-quality and the buttons feel stiff and unresponsive. The keyboard will frequently miss inputs. I've also noticed that the phone somehow crosses inputs at times, registering a key that was completely different than what you pressed.

The camera quality is decent if you set the photo quality to the highest settings. I don't have any complaints here as I don't believe anyone who demands a high quality picture will expect to get one through their phone.

The battery life is fucking awful. AWFUL. This thing absolutely slaughters batteries. It's ridiculous; you spend more time charging the phone than using it. The "mobile" of "mobile phone" isn't particularly useful of that mobile phone has to be plugged into a laptop or power source while you're out and about.

The performance of the phone, considering how quickly it eats batteries, should be phenomenal. It isn't. The phone frequently hangs and lags while navigating Windows Mobile 5. The phone is also prone to hardlocking and it happens regularly (2~3 times per day, depending on what you're doing). You might experience less if you're only using your phone to talk...but why would you have a smartphone if that was all you were doing?

I would rate this phone a 4/10 if I had to give it a number rating. The design is sleek and the texting/emailing work very well. The rubberized texture of the outer cover is nice and the screen is very crisp. Unfortunately, the phone fails at all the most important features that go into making a good cell phone.

Get one of the other phones. The Treo 755p or Blackberry 8830 would be much better choices of similar size/design. They're more expensive for a reason.

The Q can be frustrating, but once I installed Candlelight and larned the home+space quick lock, my battery life has gotten a lot better. USB charge at work removes any other problems. I do have some shit under the screen already though (ugh).

p.s. First two bills did come together.. $66 or something.

Just so you guys know:

If you decide to get a Blackberry on this plan, you're going to be paying a lot more than $30. Their data plans are completely seperate from all this. The best I could do was explain my situation to their advanced technical department and get a recurring $20 monthly credit for the $40 Blackberry plan (Which means $30 for the plan here and $20 for unlimited internet/texting for the Blackberry).

It's like, a month since I got my Q and I still love it.
Not a single lock-up or crash. I've got NES, SNES and other things on it, an upgraded calendar program, an automatic keylock program, and other things...all gravy.

Battery life does suck compared to my old phone...but my old phone was an E815, which would last for about 24 hours on a full charge with regular use. Nothing's beating that. I bought an extended battery, and it's pretty much on par with that now.
