What are my overall music tastes?

Dont you listen to Arcade Fire and all that shit?

Im in no means comparing bands but Im guessin you're pretty young.

Take my advice and start the Tool catalogue from the beginning. Dont do a belly flop right into the middle. Watch the evolution and maybe discover some inspiration you see in some of the bands you listen to today.

I'm one of those folks that has a HUGE taste in music, and Metal is easily my favorite genre, so I'm well versed in it. For me, listening to Lateralus first isn't really all that daunting, although I'm sure it takes plenty of adjustment. Frankly, I have no problem with that when it comes to music.

Ok well your first second mistake is classifying Tool as Metal.

=P

Nine inch nails and Tool in the same month?! I need to go to Mexico.

Sure, they aren't exactly a Metal band, but they have plenty of influence from Metal bands in which I have knowledge of, such as the Melvins. I am well aware, however, that they draw their own unique musical style from a myriad of genres.

I miss tool. Band changed my life. Defiantly not what they used to be. I mean come the fuck on already! 7 years for Christs sakes...

Hope there is some tour. I would love to see them live at least once, even if his voice is not what it used to be. I'm a drummer, and Carey's drumming is pretty much my favorite.

No dream setlist does not contain bottom, the grudge, or D/R/T

also no quarter for rarity sake

Tool is such fucking bullshit. so after 5 years they release 10,000 days. lets examine the album:

out of these songs, i would say vicarious, jambi, the pot, rosetta stoned and right in two are actual songs. so 5 years gets you 5 songs with a total runtime of about 40 minutes. what the fuck? not only that, but vicarious is kind of a junk song (i do like danny in it). what the fuck are these guys doing?

i know maynard has his wine and puscifer (and to a lesser degree APC), but it's been 8 years or whatever.... and we've gotten jack shit. there have been sporadic tours here or there. i feel like maynard or all of them can no longer make music up to tools standard but if that is the case just come out and say we can't do it and become the pixies where you're just basically a touring band.

i love tool (even though the last album was pretty mediocre) but it is frustrating that they release no new music and do not really tour. AND the last time i saw them live in LA they didn't even fucking play aenema! how do you not play that everytime you visit LA? fucking bullshit

Came in here for an FMT rant.

I was not disappointed.

I agree 100%. I saw TOOL and APC on tour - the APC set was atrocious and booooooooooring (they didn't play Judith!, it was mostly garbage from eMotive those fucking assholes) and the TOOL set was too much shit from 10,000 Days.

Fuck Maynard.

Saw Ticks & Leeches, Pushit, Hooker with a Penis and Parabola during their 2012 tour. yeahhhhh

Which is great and all. But missing so much other shit. And I think my set was like 9 songs at most...so many of them with pointlessly long interludes that seriously had nothing going for them.

I always dug the APC sound more, but I realize that's blasphemy.
(Also, I was exposed to APC first, which probably caused the bias.)

Mer de Noms was fantastic.

Oh, and the MdN tour was one of my first concerts. They played Judith.

It was great.

I saw these setlists over the course of two nights.

Hooker With A Penis
Jambi
Stinkfist
Ticks & Leeches
Pushit
Schism
Intension
Forty Six & 2
Lateralus
The Pot
Ænema

Hooker With A Penis
Jambi
Stinkfist
Sober
Pushit
Schism (new intro)
Intension
Forty-Six & 2
Lateralus
Parabol
Parabola
Ænema

They've always played like 9-11 songs.

They played Intolerance and Third Eye in 2011. I missed those shows due to college finals.

I don't really know TOOL's music, but I can say I hate this thread. It's making it extremely difficult for me to keep track of people responding to my posts.

Didn't see Tool last year, so can't comment.. but I've seen APC twice. First time I gave them a pass, but the second show being more of the same I was done seeing them live.

Technically perfect set, but that was the problem. I might as well have just listened to the album, because there was shit all else, no energy, nothing added, nothing to make it feel like a good live show.

I felt more disappointed in those APC shows than any other shows I've been too.. and I saw some shitty bands back in the... I fell asleep during a Melvin's set.. and APC was worse.

Go in the reverse order. Aenima -> Undertow -> Opiate

I kinda like that to be honest.. if I recommended someone new to Tool I'd go that route. Ænima was probably the perfect balance of production to raw sound, and going backwards to their roots through Undertow and Opiate is a good route.. then back to Lateralus and 10,000.

I'm not quite sure Undertow grabs someone the same way it did me back 1993. I think it's a great album, but I think easier for someone today to give a fair shake after Ænima .

Opiate is great too.. love it. ..but my most listened to album is Salival. That version of Push It, with You Lied, No Quarter and Merkaba? Super fucking solid stuff.

I read several times that tool fans are terrible. now I see why.

Pretty much...and as for their live shows, they hardly ever change up their set lists. Love them, but I feel they're mailing it in.

Ive owned all of Tools albums at some point, and personally i think they have a fantastic album in them somewhere but all of them tend to have alot of filler, 10,000 days being the worst offender. If you took their best songs off every album and stuck it on one album, itd be fucking incredible.

A new album will come at some point.
But what seems lost is great live performance. I never had the chance to go to one but know when you watch some live, it's big screens with looping clips which finally overtook the musicians presence, cause Maynard is in the background doing...not much and conservative singing. On the front you have the guitarist statue and Justin Chancellor pelvic thrusting his bass.
Counting lateralus period, Maynard was doing the show alone with his choreography and "costume", so now he toned down that, it's a lot less interesting.
That's strange cause puscifer performances are kinda good.

.

Opiate and Undertow >>>>

Aenima started getting masturbatory, then it was all downhill. 17 minute songs. 9 of which is just ambient build up.

Tighten that shit up Tool.

You have to be there in person. It's something else to see them in person. Unlike any other band I've seen.

If anyone is going to be kidnapped, it's fans traveling in to see them.
Not the band itself, don't be silly. Even then, it's not like it's a sure thing.

If I have the occasion I certainly will.
Watching some videos from the 90s are still more interesting than what they're doing now theatrically though.

This is exciting news. Here's hoping they actually decide to put out some new material. A new TOOL album is way overdue at this point.
